<<The “Authorized” Version, also known as the King James Version of the Bible, is certainly doctrinally biased, however, aside from the fact that it is an incomplete Bible there is nothing exceptionally wrong with the translation. >>

It has been pointed out here several times that the KJV is not an “incomplete Bible”. It was originally translated and published WITH the Apocrypha/Deuterocanonical books–in fact, with three (1 & 2 Esdras and Prayer of Manasses) that all not in the Vulgate, but are in the LXX.

In fact, EVERY major English translation included these books UNTIL the New American Standard Bible of the 1960’s.

my question is do catholics use this bible or are there specific bibles that catholics read?

thanks in advance
I don’t read the KJV though I have two from my protestant days.

I read the Douay.

I was having a discussion with a Protestant last night. We were discussing scriptures (I was pointing out the holes in Sola Scriptura) and noted that I use several translations of the Bible, just because I like the varied languages.

“I just use the King James: the ORIGINAL”

Oh, boy… I was good. I didn’t go nyah-nyah, although I was thinking it.

So many people believe that the King James Bible, not printed until some 1500 years into Christianity COULD be the original Bible.

I like it. I think it’s a great Bible. I love the language. But it’s missing a lot (Didn’t even get into that with him)

I’m praying for him. I don’t expect him to come around right away, but I think he’s receptive.

But it was a shocker to him that the KJV isn’t the original bible.

I like the KJV. However, the more I learn about the Masoretic Text they used for the OT, the more I don’t trust it. But it makes a good companion to the Douay-Rheims, as it’s from the same time period but some of its renderings are more poetic (psalm 23 for instance). That translation team simply had a better ear.

I also remember hearing on a TV documentary (about the English Language) that English catholics at the time were quite accepting of it. I don’t know if that’s true or not.

Good heavens!!

Any bible with an imprimatur is ok - anything without IS NOT!!

From a poor translation to an INCORRECT translation to 7 books missing: if you’re Catholic memorize a Catholic bible - If you memorize a Catholic bible I think you’ll recognize the chpter and verse, (just like the Protestants)! andthen you;ll see why they don’t believe what we believe.

Don’t force feed your brain something that is inherently WRONG!

Does anyone know Lady Diana and Prince Charles?

Well it is from their ancestors we received the King James Bible.

King Henry VIII was excommunicated from the Catholic Church for divorcing and remarrying.
He made himself “pope” over his own church The Church of England aka The Anglican Church.

Married to Catherine had a daughter Mary.He divorced Catherine.
He wanted a boy.
He got Anne Boleyn pregnant then married her while still married to his 1st wife.- she had a girl – Elizabeth I

He executed Anne and married Jane Seymour–then had a son Edward

So England is “protesting” the Catholic Church.
King Henry dies.
Edward is king then dies --young–
Mary becomes queen and she is still Catholic so she swings all of England back to the Catholic Church.
She dies

Elizabeth becomes queen. She swings England back over to “protestantism” She never marries or has any children because of her father and him executing 5 wives her mother too.

Well her half cousin is queen of Scottland “Mary Queen of Scotts” and comes to England to ask for help and her half cousin Elizabeth has her arrested and beheaded because Mary has more rights to be queen of England then Elizabeth.

When Queen Elizabeth dies that leaves Mary Queen of Scotts son King of England,Scottland and France, (I believe)

His name?

King James

And because of Martin Luther (another protestant of the Catholic Church) Those “protestant” bibles are missing 7 books!

Jesus refers to those “missing” books.

The Catholic Bibles have all original books.

That is like saying I have the “President Bush Version” of the bible!

The PBV:eek:

There I got that out of my system:whacky:

For the thousandth time, the King James Version is not missing any books! The entire “apocrypha” deuterocanonical books are in it.

Now, there may be editions put out by modern publishers with agendas that leave those books out, but the original 1611 edition did not. Let’s get our facts straight.

And a second point - the RSV was and still is a “protestant bible”, yet it’s quoted in the Catechism.

this is the bible that i have begun to read
my question is do catholics use this bible or are there specific bibles that catholics read?

I recommend the Ignatius bible, as it has not been so politically corrected as some others. It is known as the RSV-CE (Revised Standard Version-Catholic Edition). Look for the 2nd edition-it has the corrected wording in Isaiah 7:14 regarding the virgin birth. Italso has all of the original canon of scripture. Luther expunged seven books of scripture in the “reformation”. They remain in the Catholic bibles, but the KJV does not have them. Also, I have heard from an apologist that the KJV has over 2,000 errors in translation. Even so, it is very usable to quote from when in discussions with Mormons, as it is their version of the bible.

Christ’s peace.

It depends which KJV you get. Cambridge University Press publishes the KJV with Apocrypha. All the books are there, just not in the same order as in a Catholic Bible. It also has a few books that are recognised by the Orthodox but not the Catholic Church (1 & 2 Esdras and the Prayer of Manasses).

Thanks! I use the plain Jane version in “debates”.

I like the KJV because it has so much resonance with cultural references to it in the whole English speaking world, but I want the most accurate translation.

I would suggest that you get a Douay-Rheims Bible, the period English is very similar and it includes all 73 books.

You can check it out here.
I agree wholeheartedly
