Is Gonzaga in Spokane this way? I have thoughts of attending for a law degree but it’ll scare me off if I’m defending real Church teaching from a crazy “theology” professor…
C’mon, man, this is beneath you. Don’t get me wrong, I think what he said was abhorrent. But making fun of how someone looks (especially when, as far as I can tell, he looks like a relatively normal guy wearing a button down shirt and jeans…pretty sure I own that shirt, actually…) is kind of cheap and petty. And insinuating that he has “queer desires” is pretty ugly, too.Because he looks like a bit of a goof ball who may have “queer desires” himself.
I think the student writing the piece was looking for the most stark example of the professor’s thinking. He hasn’t retracted as nearly as I can tell.Professor Liew wrote these things almost a decade ago.
The college responded as mentioned in the article you posted. I’ll paste the response so that everyone can easily find it:He wants the college to ask Liew to publicly disavow his writings mentioned in this thread.
This is reasonable to me. At times it is required to take positions that do not match your beliefs in order to propel a discussion forward. It’s a tool of argumentation. It’s reserved for those who are capable of understand its purpose (other academics not undergraduates). It’s a widely used practice across all disciplines.A statement from school spokesman John Hill said the “decade-old work” was not intended for undergraduates and has not been assigned in the classroom.
“It was an intentionally provocative work, not a statement of belief, meant to foster discussion among a small group of Biblical scholars exploring marginalization. No one has made a complaint about the content of Professor Liew’s classes in his four years at Holy Cross,” he said.
Jesuit Father Philip Boroughs, president of the College of the Holy Cross, said Liew is a dedicated teacher, engaged scholar, and a man of faith.
