Yes, it is, because it is on a Tuesday. As far as I know, it is only abrogated to the Sunday if the Holy Day falls on a Saturday or on a Monday, and (in the U.S.) this relates to all Holy Days EXCEPT for Immaculate Conception (Dec. 8) and Christmas, which are never abrogated.

Yes it is, Feast of Mary, Mother of God

Thank you folks. Now will you please say a prayer that I can get my kids to mass for that? I know that there’s going to be a lot of resistance due to New Years Eve/day.

The bishops in California dispense all from the obligation each year.
Really? I live in California, and haven’t heard of this. Maybe it will be mentioned at tomorrow’s mass.

In any case, I intend to attend Mass on 1 January from devotion to Mary, and it is one of my days off. Also, I stay at home and do not party New Year’s Eve, so have no hangovers or other problems to contend with

It is the case here in Southern California, I’m in Orange, and I think all of California. The local bishops cannot abolish the obligation, but they can waive it each year. They have announced their intention to do it every year.

It has been in effect several years; so there may not be much of an announcement.

I try to go everyday; so don’t pay much attention to it, except to advise my RCIA class.

The parish here announced in the bulletin that it is not. I guess it’s a California thing as per the previous posters.

Is Jan 1 a holy day of obligation this year?

Thank you.
Yes and every year, Solemnity of Mary. It is NEVER “waived” read your bulletin again. The obligation to attend Mass may be dispensed or moved to the nearest Sunday, but it is still a Holy Day, no bishop can change the Church calendar

I think it depends on where you live
.
As far as I’m concerned, it’s not a Holy Day of Obligation in Singapore or Indonesia. 😃 But if I could I’d love to go to Mass :D.

I’ve read it every week for a month. It says in big bold letters (NOT A HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION). There are no other days around then mentioned. I know how to read thank you very much.

January 1st is NOT a Holy day of Obligation in the UK or Ireland. One would hope people would make the effort to go to mass on that day to honour the Mother of God not because they have an obligation.

So it is dispensed; not waived. I was typing quickly and chose the wrong word - MEA CULPA, MEA CULPA, MEA MAXIMA CULPA.

I hope you beated your breast at the required three times:D

For what it is worth, I attended the 5 PM mass today of a nearby Church, and they had scheduled two masses for 1 January. The title of the day was mentioned. There was no mention of any obligation… waived, dispensed, or otherwise. 🤷

There is a parish in my diocese that is having Mass at 11 pm on December 31, so it is a Vigil Mass, but when it is over, it will be January 1. That would be a really nice way to honour Our Lady and ring in the New Year without doing anything problematic. 🙂

I agree with that! Alas, I need to stay at home. I live in a neighborhood where lots of illegal fireworks will be set off on the evening of 31 December. Plus gunshots into the air at midnight.

As any dog and/or cat owner can tell you, many pets panic at these loud noises. I need to stay home and reassure the cats that they are safe. 😦
