DECLARATION BY THE DIRECTOR OF THE PRESS OFFICE OF THE HOLY SEE, REV. FR. FEDERICO LOMBARDI, SJ

In the late morning the Director of the Press Office of the Holy See, Rev. Fr. Federico Lombardi, SJ, gave the journalists the following declaration:

Not rarely the information media attribute to the “Vatican”, intending by that the Holy See, comments and points of view which cannot be attributed to it automatically. The Holy See, in fact, when it intends to express itself authoritatively, uses the proper ways and appropriate means (communiques, notes, declarations).

No other pronouncement has the same merit.
Also recently, inopportune attributions have been made. The Holy See, in its representative branches, shows respect toward civil authorities, which in their legitimate autonomy have the right to provide for the common good.

This declaration is, of course, defensive. Not defensive in that the Holy See is trying to cover up something but defensive in that the Holy See is battling the anti-Catholic media, which usually include such sources of information as “Vatican”, “official of the Vatican”, without any specifications of who the information comes from - because the news is baloney. (See, for example, Time magazine’s article on the Pope)

Do not worry about news you called baloney! Such kind of news would not hold water and in time they would simply die.

Right here on CAF we have a member that has started 42 threads from non Vatican sources since 2/8/09. The majority of them are not pro-religion or pro-Catholic. Nor do they seem to want knowledge of Holy Mother Church. So even here we need to watch what we read and respond carefully.

I’m pretty dense but even I noticed that one! I know of whom you speak. 😃

Eucharisted, thank you for posting the declaration. I am going to save that and bring it out when I next see a “The Vatican says…” in the secular news.

Not only is the secular media anti-Catholic, it is ignorant of the Church. It’s model is politics, humanist politics, and politics as the engine that runs things. Where humans are involved, politics will intrude, but it is not how the church operates or is governed.

I remember an observation about media reaction to the election of the Holy Father. The Cardinals overlooked Bob Geldof, Oprah Winfrey, the Dali Lama, and other such notables and elected, of all things, a Catholic to the Chair of Peter.

If just ignorance, it would be laughable. But when coupled with the deliberate anti-Catholic bias, it becomes despicable and malicious.

Good for the Holy See for not staying silent in the face of this viciousness.

Blessings,

Gerry

Any time I hear in the secular media “The Vatican today said” I reach for my grain of salt. Then I come here to see if, and what, the Vatican actually said.

Does this mean that the story about the Beatles being better than modern pop wasn’t really an official Vatican declaration:doh2: ? Aw, man!
