I had a house blessing yesterday and had Father bless some oil and a pitcher of water. We were in a hurry for an event so I forgot to put the pitcher in the refrigerator. When we got home, my wife emptied it down the kitchen drain before I could get to it.

She didn’t know what it was as she wasn’t present during the blessing as I failed to tell her in my hurry. Needless to say, I’m devastated and she is in a panic.

I’m new to traditional Catholic rites and haven’t found any information on something this specific. How serious is this and what should I do?

It was an accident so relax. In the future have a bottle marked “Holy water” for use of Holy water.

Former Sacristan here. It was an accident. If you can, mop up the holy water with a paper towel and set those aside to dry. Throw them away after the holy water evaporates. Leave the sink alone and let the holy water dry from it too.

As everyone is telling you, it was an accident. There is no need to be ‘devastated’.

Think of this as another example of an accident involving holy water : I’d imagine your church, like mine, has holy water stoups in the porch. How often , do you think, do drops fall on the floor and then people tread in them as they come in. You wouldn’t be ‘devastated’ over that, surely, would you?

Please don’t let your poor wife continue any longer in a panic! There’s no need for that, and it is bad for her health.

Agreed with HeDa. She wasn’t willingly trying to desecrate Holy Water, so she’s not at fault.

It’s not serious, there is no need to be in a panic about anything, and there isn’t anything you need to do.

You can get more holy water from your parish church. Many church supply companies sell small bottles that are marked “holy water”. You can make your own. I suggest getting a plastic bottle or container and marking in permanent marker.

While holy water should be treated with reverence, it’s a sacramental, not a sacrament. It is not as though you were allowing crumbs of the Eucharist to stick to your hand or fall on the floor. I use holy water daily and some of it gets on my clothes, in my hair (what little I have), on the table, on the floor, all over the place. No big deal.
