hey i’ve read that Catholics will have Holy Water at their house, how does one use holy water and whata re the proper ways of using it

I use it to bless myself before and after prayer, before going to sleep for the night. I sprinkle it around my bedroom every once and a while before retiring for the evening. Sometimes I will sprinkle some in every room and ask for God’s protection; from natural (such as storms) and supernatural things.

I wouldn’t go looking for it in EVERY Catholic home, but it should be there, as well as at the entrance to churches.

It is water blessed by a priest or deacon (baptismal water) or by a priest at the Easter Vigil.

It is used to bless any person, animal, or object which you wish to bless. Children, pets and houses and cars are favorite objects to be blessed…mostly for safety and care, but also books and other objects we may use for G-d’s purposes.

This message is being sent to you on a blessed laptop (because I want to be reminded to use it for good work and play, and not for noxious purposes).

Peace.

It would probably be helpful to read the article in the Catholic Encyclopedia here: newadvent.org/cathen/07432a.htm

The most popular use I know of is dipping the fingers in the Holy Water and then making the sign of the cross, usually before and after prayers.

I put a bowl of it in my room and if I’m ever tempted to sin I’ll dip my hand in it, make the sign of the cross, and say “By this holy water and by Your Precious Blood, wash away all my sins, O Lord.” 🙂

It can also be used to help the poor souls in Purgatory. I sprinkle a little in the air and hope it lands and hope it lands on a friend or relative, or any suffering soul.

Where can I get some? Do I just bring a small plastic bottle with me to church and take some from the fount?

We have a holy water font at the entrance of our home (by the light switch) and one by each of the bedroom doors. We get the holy water from Church. We used to bless ourselves daily. We seem to be out of the habit.

The kids and I bless the rooms, the house, eachother, the animals, the property. Basically anything and everything. If there is some scarier stuff going on or some serious issues, we will usually use the holy water more often.

BTW, we love Holy Water. We even have small bottles for when we travel. 🙂

Blessings.

Just a reminder, If you cross yourself with holy water, sprinkle yourself, or be sprinkled with holy water, all while receiving or being administered to with a pious intent, venial sin is expelled. It is a very good idea to cross or sprinkle yourself with holy water whenever you get the chance.

What? In the East, Holy Water is taken more than it is sprinkled on something. I don’t believe the laity would even sprinkle Holy Water on something, its always the priest. We do not have fonts at the entrances of our parish so you can dip your hands and make a sign of the cross. Especially at Theophany (Baptism of Christ), we get to have water blessed to bring home and we can drink it or mix it with food. I’ve heard some would have Holy Water to drink after receiving Communion to make sure all the particles in the mouth are swallowed.

I personally wouldn’t use any holy water to drink or put into food if it’s been in a font. theres been some nasty stuff found in fonts.

You may want to go to a Catholic store (or online), there are bottles made specifically for holy water.

do you have to ask the priest for Holy water when its sitting out in those bowls or is it just free to take? and what other thing could i put it in besides a specific holy water holder?

Just lift the lid and take a peek. 😉

Nasty stuff in holy water fonts? Like what? I’ve never found anything nasty in there.
