beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Look, I’m not interested in arguing whether or not the Fieldhouse is an ugly setting to have Mass - it is. The real question, one worth considering, is why a Catholic university holds Mass in what has to be the ugliest setting on the entire campus (and as I have said, I have been there).

Now since I am not in a position to write them a check for a beautiful new chapel, I can only say that it is a shame that year after year, students have to celebrate the Mass in such uninspiring surroundings. I am tempted to call it a scandal.

FWIW, these monks in Oklahoma are living in converted horse stables while they build their church:

Well Mike, if you want to know, give em a call and ask them. As far as scandal, you can call it what you want.

They used what they had to work with.
Unless you’ve been to FUS you have no clue what else they have to work with.
I remember the teen masses in MA where I grew up, Grades 7-12 attended. There was an overhead projector, with transparancies of the songs. The kids had their own band, played all of the music. Paper cost money, and “mimeo” machines back in "72 were not like the Xerox’s of today. Father Devlin, only had one request, “no gum chewing”. We complied.
.
Yikes!
No wonder you thought this was great.
My kids would think pudding was great too if all they were ever fed was Ice Cream.

My comment,
If all the Marty Haugen music suddenly vanished from all churches throughout the whole world, I would not be :crying:

I would be 😃

Without a doubt, this is the most uncharitable bunch of antagonists I have encountered in many a day! Still criticizing after the young man patiently described the entire situation and background, yet you did not even read his words, or chose deliberately not to hear them. Reason has no place in a mind-set that is bent on fault-finding, now does it.

I get the feeling that you believe no liturgy at all would please Almighty God rather than gather with his children and receive their grateful joy and praise. How judgmental to believe that Christ, who deigned to be born in a stable, would refuse to grace an ordinary unembellished structure even though it was filled “with HUGE CROWDS” who gathered to rejoice in His sacred presence.

And it is always the same pessimistic quartet that assembles to quench the spirits of those who love the Lord. May God be merciful!

I’ll take traditionalists for 1000 Alex…

The pessimistic quartet

you are correct, I :bowdown2: I forgot you know everything…my mistake.

Well, Net, some people like pudding, others like ice cream. The mass was followed, CCD class followed after mass. The kids were involved and packed the place out. Perhaps you should write the Diocese of Springfield, and bend their ear about it.

It’s nice of someone around here to finally see that I do know everything 😉

Hey JUL, some have their teeth fall out from too much sugar.

As for writing the Diocese of Springfield, it’s not my diocese, however I will be meeting with the Bishop Emeritus of Steubenville in May. We be speaking about this celebration.

And here is another…
But you know what I am really getting sick of your poo-poo attitude! It really seems you have issues with “trads”??

Yes, may God be merciful!
And why is it the same voice(s) that assemble to rile/bash/irritate the “trads” ???

Hey, hey, hey now. This is not the traditionalist forum.

The might not get away with insulting us here.

You know when you meet with him Netmil(name removed by moderator)…please let him know he may be loosing a prospective student…my son will not attend a Catholic School if Mass is held in a barn, field house etc. If they do not have a big enough church to accomodate the masses then perhaps they should expand 🙂 Also not keen on video screens, slappy clappy masses etc. At this rate my kids are better off at a noncatholic school where I know what they can expect to get in the way of a Mass!

I** agree with this since they got all of my money when I was a student! I think the biggest reason why they haven’t built a new church, is that most of their alumni are poor. I know several people who majored in Theology and cannot find work as a youth minister because there are so many liberal dioceses who refuse to hire them because they will not do LIfeTeen correctly!

There is another point that I would like to bring up and that is you have to understand who donates to the University and who is on the board of trustees. Another issue they have is they are known as a place where the Charismatic movement is a large part of the community.I would also like to point out that Cardinal Arinze has seen mass celebrated there. And I also believe that the late Holy Father held and Honorary Doctorate from FUS that Fr. Micheal had brought to be conferred upon him during one of their meetings.(I believe this was in 2000 or 2001)

FUS gets money from a very select group of people and many of those people only give on the basis that its got a Charismatic heritage.

This qoute pretty sums up what I think about the music in general.

"If we want to know whom we are dealing with, the Holy Spirit or the unholy spirit, we have to remember that it is the Holy Spirit who moves us to say, “Jesus is Lord” (I Cor 12:3). The Holy Spirit leads us to the Logos, and He leads us to a music that serves the Logos as a sign of the sursum corda, the lifting up of the human heart. "**

So I guess he has never done volunteer work in another country where they have masses in a barn, outside etc.?

**They use the chapel 3-4 times a day for daily mass. But when you have 1000-1500 people going to church at one time then its hard to get them all in. Again they do not have the money and believe me its not for lack of trying. **

Also not keen on video screens, slappy clappy masses etc. At this rate my kids are better off at a noncatholic school where I know what they can expect to get in the way of a Mass!
**How sad you’d rob your children of some of the best Theology professors in the United States and no I am not talking about Dr. Scott Hahn (GASP:) THere are 3 other churches in the area that he could go to if he doesn’t like the Charismatic movement (which is what I did, St. Peter’s is a great church!) or if he has a car he could go to Latin Mass every Sunday in Pittsburgh .

I’d like to clarify that I am not charismatic in fact I consider myself a “traditionlist”, but I have never learned to love my faith and cherish the fact that I am Catholic than when I was at FUS. Transfering from a public Unviersity that had a large population of Catholics, I was tired of Professors disliking any dissenting opinions other than thier own immoral values.
At FUS you are required to take Theology and here is where the Church truly became alive for me and actually reading some Catholic Theologians such as Henri deLubac and VonBalthasar. **

actaully he has done volunteer work in this country and over seas…no barns for mass though always in a Church:)

well theology is not the only reason he is going to College…if it was then I would reconsider:) also once I found out it was a big Charasmatic movement etc. on campus…I knew this really was not the place for him;)
