sir WE KNOW it is called a shrine but most people use the term altar so deal with it
**What kind of response was THAT to me?

The fact is, people need to be corrected in the terminology that is being used. Either altar means what it is and shrine means what it is, or neither word means what they are meant to mean. If you know it is a shrine, then refer to it as such. You do not have ‘altars’ in your homes unless you have built a chapel in there.**

sprinkle holy water on the place u have the icons, and also in the room saying as u sprinkling in the name of the father, son and holy spirit

why do people always have to be right it is an altar to us not one for valid consecration but where jesus sits at the center of our homes. it is a shrine and an altar if you could just get over it people make mistakes dont judge others untill you are perfect

You folks have given me inspiration. I don’t have a dedicated space I can make, but I can make a “portable” one in a box and then take it out when I am to pray.

My husband is at home recovering from a heart attack. After that and because I am inspired by the pictures I have seen here I have worked on our family altar which was pretty sparse heretofore. I had a staute of the Archangel Gabriel which was standing on a kitchen cabinet which was added as well as two icons, one of St. Michael and one of St. Raphael. I painted a statue of Our Lady that I had waiting to be finished and placed her there. I pulled out two votive cups to put in the wall sconces beside the Crucifix so they throw light on it. Our rosaries hang on the sconces. Fresh flowers are next on my list. If I can I will get a picture.
Thank you for all your lovely ideas.🙂

Our family has a home altar from before my birth but some of the sacred images were damaged accidentally and others due to age. A few years ago a room became vacant so I made it a prayer room but then my uncle would be moving to that room, good thing he left another room vacant so I thought I’d be using that instead since some of the sacred images there are antiques. Currently, the old altar we had are with 3 images of our Lord, I would be adding 2 images of saints tomorrow. As for the vacant room, I would still need two images of the Virgin Mary since I am planning to dedicate it to her. Meanwhile, I am preparing a “Concordat” (for me and my parents) in order to secure the sacred spots (so it won’t move again). I would be including a provision which will be allowing me to set up a simple altar (table, an image of a saint, flowers, a candle) anywhere in the house because I have many images of saints which I am currently keeping in boxes inside a cabinet since the new prayer room lacks space. I hope I could place some pictures soon.

From previous threads, I read something about the seasons of the liturgical year. A few years ago, I started a practice wherein I remove all the sacred images (some I cover with red cloth) in the house and put it in another room which I keep sealed in Holy Week all except for one crucifix which is veiled which I place in a special spot which an be seen be all. Then on Good Friday, sometime before 3:00 PM (since I need to attend the Liturgy), I unveil but then at evening I also remove it making the house “imageless”. Just before Black Saturday evening though I place all of them back, I remove the covers of others then I place a special candle to be lit during the Easter Season. Is this a good practice? I am planning to revise it.

I am working on set up a home altar (aka - shrine) and want to have coverings in linen that match the liturgical color of the season. My question is do they need to be the exact same color (currently what I would call a “kelly green”) or can I go with something a little softer like an olive green? 🤷 Thanks for your (name removed by moderator)ut!

We have one. It didn’t start off as one but after a statue and a cross, it started becoming one. It’s on an antique table we call a tobacco stand, been in the family for four generations.

Everything is small and proportional to the table, no more than eight inches high. We have a crystal celtic cross, a small crucifix, three icons, a statue of the Holy Family, Saint Anthony, Our Lady or Lourdes, two pictures of deceased relatives and two candles any more would be too much

I was thinking of nice picture above the prayer table. Maybe “Ecce Homo” I’m going to let it come organically, let God bring it to me.

oh I was also thinking of a replica Monstrance, or a Pieta…but…it might be too much stuff…

I am in the process of creating my home altar/shrine and I would like to ask a question (please pardon my ignorance), would it be ok to place photos of deceased family members on the altar/shrine?

Of course you can. Mexicans do a special altar in the day of the dead , to honor thier dead family members.

This is our home altar. We have it in our bedroom and wake up to it each morning. The icons are St Michael and St Raphael. The statue of St Gabriel was found at a resale shop. The statue of Our Lady was found rather battered in a discount department store clearance bin. I recent repainted it. All of our house reflects the Western/Southwestern American style. Our home is basically “Cowboys and Indians” all over. No surprise our altar table which I painted to look like a serape resembles it also.

Slyboots, that’s a beautiful home shrine. I love the Sacred Heart image, it’s the same one I gave to my brother and his wife for their housewarming gift. Oh, and the St. Gabriel statue’s awesome!

I’ve been on this thread for over a year now, so I thought I’d finally post my own little home shrine. It’s very, very simple. It’s mainly a pic of the Sacred Heart with a little blessed prayer card with Psalm 27 printed on it that was given out at my grandma’s funeral. Also a prayer candle of St. Michael with my confirmation pendant tied around the top, and a couple other prayer candles that I rotate out depending on the day. (For example I’ll move a Blessed Mother candle there on a Saturday or a feast of the BVM, etc.)
