Should a Catholic be concerned in purchasing a house that once had a suicide? The purchaser is a Catholic family with children.

Sorry if it came across that way. It was more poking fun at the horror trope this thread seems to come from.

I’d say more people probably die in hospital emergency rooms from suicide attempts than at home. hospitals don’t seem haunted to me.

Have the local priest bless the house, and perform a simple rite of exorcism if thought appropriate. There is precious little terra firma in civilization where someone, at some time, has not died.

Then, live in peace, knowing that your prayers benefit, however they can, the tortured soul who saw no beauty in life.

I have heard that a mass celebrated where a person had a violent death may benefit. It can’t hurt. But plenty evil can have happened in a house one buys, so blessing is always good.

Evil forces are not restricted in the material world in some cases and that includes access to homes. I was thinking that the negativity of the dwelling that this intrinsic act brings may increase the odds of that to happen, and that perhaps the Church would want us to avoid if possible.

I’m squeamish and so I wouldn’t touch a home wherein occurred a violent death with a ten foot pole.

In fact, Australian realtors obliged under law to inform a potential home buyer if the property has had such a history.

That being said, there’s no actual theological reason to avoid such a property. I just prefer not being creeped out when eating my toast.

This honestly sounds less Catholic and more spiritualistic, almost like some evil force is now bound to the home because of what happened. I don’t think demons care so much about the house. That isn’t to say they may not use an event to get at the new resident, but I only say that because such paranoia isn’t healthy.

But by all means, get the house blessed. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with that. It’s just that this thread seems grounded in beliefs that aren’t really Catholic.

I Would not be concerned. , I would always get the new house blessed by your Priest.

Thanks all. 👍

I will have a mass intention for the soul and the house blessed.

There is absolutely no concern about buying a house where someone has died, regardless of the reason for the death.

I know the family that lives in the “Clutter” house. (In Cold Blood fame). No problems.
