Homer Simpson is Catholic, Vatican paper declares

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - “The Simpsons” just got a blessing from the Vatican.

The official Vatican newspaper has declared that beer-swilling, doughnut-loving Homer Simpson and son Bart are Catholics – and what’s more, it says that parents should not be afraid to let their children watch “the adventures of the little guys in yellow.”

“Few people know it, and he does everything to hide it. But it’s true: Homer J. Simpson is Catholic”, the Osservatore Romano newspaper said in an article on Sunday headlined “Homer and Bart are Catholics.”

“We’ve pretty clearly shown that Homer is not Catholic,” Jean said. “I really don’t think he could go without eating meat on Fridays – for even an hour.”

Yes, that episode was mentioned in the article. I think Bart ended up in a Catholic school and a hip Catholic priest was able to draw Bart, and further Homer, in. Its funny how Reverend Lovejoy and Ned Flanders went into action to draw Homer and Bart out of Catholicism.

Although the Simpsons had its share of anti-Catholic remarks, or at least those that question Catholic theology. There was I think a Holloween episode where there were zombies and Bart held the key to saving everyone. When they got to this safe zone everyone rejoiced that their savior was there and they said, “lets eat him!” Marge commented that what kind of deranged people would eat their savior, which made Rev. Lovejoy loosen his collar.

Although for years he went to Reverend Lovejoy’s church, which occording to Tim Lovejoy is The Western Branch of American Reform Presbylutheranism.

The Vatican paper has it all wrong. As a lifelong Catholic and longtime Simpsons fan, Homer is not a Catholic. He’s definitely Christian, but not Catholic. In the episode in question, Reverand Lovejoy and Marge kidnap Homer before he can get baptized Catholic. He attends Lovejoy’s services reguarly.

Homer is as much a Catholic as he is a Blisstonian

You may be on to something here. In about 1960 Pope John XXIII was asked how many people worked at the Vatican. he said, “About half.” 😃

Agreed. While the Simpsons can be funny and a commentary on society, I thought it was odd that the Vatican newspaper would even know who Homer Simpson is, much less bother to comment on him.

That’s Marge’s church. Homer goes there because his wife tells him to. Very similar to many married men that attend mass instead of watching Sports Center in their underwear.
 
I thought this was so funny - my husband and I have always thought that the Simpson family was Catholic!

Silly, because it is just a 'toon, but still pretty funny. 😃

L’Osservatore Romano is really only a quasi-official Vatican newspaper. They do tend to make these statements about certain pop culture icons which of course gives rise to lots of inaccurate headlines across the world.

Of course, since L’Osservatore Romano doesn’t publish their articles online, we all have to guess at the content based on second-hand (or third-hand or fourth-hand) information. The main point that “The Simpsons” is one of the few TV shows where “Christian faith, religion, and questions about God are recurrent themes” is true enough. They don’t always handle those issues well, but they do address them far more often than most other network TV shows.

True. And while the Simpons do at times poke some fun into religion, it mostly isn’t offensive especially compared with the likes of South Park and Family Guy.

I guess this surprised the heck out of me!

A lot of Catholic parents won’t even allow their kids watch this cartoon that many say is slotted for older teens and adults. At least that’s what I always though.
I thought the Simpsons was right up there in the same classification with Family Guy and the older teenage/adult cartoon series Beavis and Butthead considering the sexual innuendo.

Makes me kind of think “why”??? the Vatican’s L’Osservatore Romano would want to sensationalize a story like this. :rolleyes:
 
L’Osservatore Romano, isn’t this the same paper that also said “The Blues Brothers” movie was a Catholic film?
