Homilies on Satan and going to H E Double Toothpick

Ok, does your priest EVER mention Satan and/or Hell? Or what causes us to go there?

Serious question.
 
Yes, he does in every Sunday homily. He doesn’t mince words, either.👍

The homily should be based on the readings of the day and whatever feast or memorial the day might be (if any). There are plenty of Biblical passages on hell and how are behavior influences if we end up there, so yes, our priests preach on it. I wouldn’t expect to hear a ‘fire and brimstone’ sermon at a Catholic church just for affect.

Simply put the priest of my parish NEVER mentions it. Just wondering if this is common or rare.

Yes, he does. Not every week but probably 3 Sundays a month the topic includes Hell, Sin, Satan, and how to avoid all three. 🙂
 
One of the “tricks” of the evil one is to make people belive he isn’t around or infuencing anything. All Christians need is to be reminded that we are in a “battle” and to battle, you need to know who your enemy is and how he operates, so priests should mention this, maybe not all the time, but many times. (I agree that it often fits in with the scripture of the day) We are living in tough times and need to be aware of what is going on. Always, always remember that Jesus has already won the battle and stand strong in HIS power. (not our own) Isn’t that why we are called the Church Millitant on earth??

No, but I do like it better when the homilist speaks directly to references to Gehenna in Matthew or the lake of fire in Revelations or whatever. I don’t think it does anyone any favors to just pass over language that strong. It has to be explained, directly and honestly.
 
Best homily I ever heard was Bishop Sheen’s “The Demonic Today.” Still available for purchase in several places I think. Anyway, he talks about the Demonic vis a vis the temptations in the desert and Peter’s trying to stop Jesus from being crucified. Main point was that the true essence of the demonic is the anti-cross, or specifically substituting politics, self-glorification, and feeding our primitive desires (sex, hunger, violence) in place of the cross.
