Homily before readings?

Here’s a new one for me:

Is this typical to have the priest give the full 10-15 minute homily before the first reading was done? Then the mass continued, responsorial psalm, 2nd reading, the Gospel. But right after the Gospel we just moved to the creed.

So this was at a parish in Wisconsin I was visiting, after mass we asked the priest and he said it’s the way he’s always said mass–the way he learned in the seminary.

I am not criticizing this I am just curious if anyone else goes to mass in this order?

I’ve lived all over the US and haven’t seen this before.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

God bless.

Yeah, I thought this was interesting. We were in Madison, actually just outside in Middleton, WI.

Anyhow, I will say that I listened to the readings with more insight after hearing him preach–pointing out what to listen for.

I was in Connecticut last week for business and went to daily Mass. The priest gave a short homily just after the Alleluia and before he read the Gospel . Never seen it before.

If this is in conflict with the General Instruction of The Roman Missal or Redemptionis Sacramentum, the I would write to the bishop - a simple e-mail.

I would pass on the e-mail for the Congregation for Divine Worship and The Sacraments if I could find it.

A new one on me but yet another example of abuse. I hope the priest was wrong about learning to celebrate Mass that way in seminary. It is not for any individual priest to change the Ordinary of the Mass.

From the 2002 General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) approved for the USA, which can be accessed from romanrite.com/girm.html :
“128. After the Collect, all sit. The priest may, very briefly, introduce the faithful to the Liturgy of the Word. Then the lector goes to the ambo and, from the Lectionary already placed there before Mass, proclaims the first reading, to which all listen.”

I know what you mean. We had a substitute priest for a week who did just that and more- only I wouldn’t call it a homily. It was one of his several “teaching moments” and they lasted as long as a homily- one at the beginning of Mass, one before the readings, then behind the altar before the Eucharistic Prayer. Every time he said Mass it was like this. A lot of what he had to say was good. But there were other issues that were questionable to say the least. The problem with his lenghthy talks was that some people attend weekday Mass before going to work and these greatly lengthened the Mass time. People had to leave before Mass was over. I believe these talks were way to long- 10 minutes is definitely not “briefly” as the GIRM allows.

I’ve seen special Spiritual Retreats hosted by a Parish with Mass included accompanied with short talks that might seem like a Homily but outside of these occasions its not something the laity generally witness where the Homily follows immediately after the Gospel reading…

We did not have a parish retreat. He was just substituting while our pastor was away.

Then it might seem odd but perhaps one should ask if it happens regularly.
I would have overlooked his “teaching moments” if it had not been for other issues. I was in no hurry to get to work or an appointment. But other issues: He would not wear a chasuble even for Sunday Mass. During the Creed he would omit “men” “…for us and for our salvation…” At daily Mass we have around 100 or more people and they are spread throught our church which is a good size church. He always invited the people to come up closer and sit together which is not a bad idea. I welcomed it. But some prefer to sit in the back for whatever reason. When they did not come closer he began scolding them- every day. These are just a few things that I can recall from a year ago. Sometimes you have to put two and two together. If what most of what he is “teaching” seems good, but you see several other issues that don’t seem quite right, is there a possibility that he could inject something into his teaching moments that is not accurate?

I would have felt uneasy and perhaps perturbed in much the same manner as you.
I’ve seen omissions made in the rubrics of the Eucharistic liturgy and even words added not normally heard. And I too have witnessed priest not wearing their Chasuble and only having an Alb and Stole on during Mass usually during Hot days in summer months. I completely understand your frustrations.

Not to take away anything that you wrote but perhaps we laity sitting in the pews are sometimes forced to be the (“Go alone, to get alone crowd”). You know don’t rock the boat sort of thing. And worse of all sometimes your looked down upon if you happen to make the smallest of an observation or agitation. Oh Well 🤷
