Historical revisionism.
Either way, would it matter?

Or - in other words - what I am asking you is, suppose the same man who wrote the Ave Maria to Bach’s Prelude in C was in fact gay - would it in any way influence your opinion of the work itself such that you would dismiss it altogether?

Perhaps, then, another inventive fellow might be worth considering - an inventor named Alan Turning… If he hadn’t come up with the an idea for something we today call “computer” to crack the Nazi’s enigma code, then we’d probably all be speaking German… which is a much greater issue than whether Schubert was gay and wrote an Ave Maria…

The point is, really, every person has sinful tendencies of some sort or another, but people also have gifts and graces too… So - if they do good work to the glory of God - who am I to judge?

I know that’s not my call. So I try to appreciate the good things that person was able to do in this life, as well as lament their sufferings.

The idea is always to focus on mercy.
