Than it is not discrimination what they have done and therefore they should not recieve any kind of legal punnishment for it, as it’s standard practice.

But as my other posts indicate, I am not sure I completely agree with their standard practice.

Then don’t work there. I may not agree that they should have hired a Methodist but that is their prerogative.

Ridiculous comparison.
Why?
By saying that missing Mass is a mortal sin (which it would only be in certain circumstances) you are acknowledging that its objectively wrong.
In Carla Hale’s view being in a same sex relationship she denies that there is anything wrong with that. She isn’t sorry for it at all. She isn’t saying that.
I understand if they are teaching the students something contrary to our beliefs or encouraging them to sin, but just because they are sinners in their personal life, I don’t think they should be fired, because we are all guilty of sin, where do you draw the line on what kind of sinners cannot be employee’s?

Don’t we hate the sin and lover the sinner? If her personal lifestyle was spilling over into her work lifestyle in the slightest than I would completely agree, however they didn’t even know until a parent noticed it in an obituary.

If her personal life and her work life are completely separate in regards to homosexuality, than what is the point of firing her?

I think we should oppose sin, but we shouldn’t be opressing sinners, like I said where do you draw the line on what kind of sinners cannot be employee’s?

True. They have the right to make that decision, but I think it is a wrong decision none the less.

Whats the problem with hiring a Methodist if they teach something like mathematics or physics?

How many times do I have to say this? There is a difference between sinners (all of us) and those who justify sins as okay (the teacher in question). I won’t say it again because its something so basic.

Also this isn’t a personal issue, she freely allowed that information to be made public through the death notice. The school wasn’t doing covert operations to find out what’s its members are doing.

If her personal lifestyle of homosexuality was spilling over into the school environment in the slightest, I would completely understand and agree with firing her, but apparently they didn’t even know until someone recognised it in an obituary.

I think it really depends on the motivator, was it because they thought it was whats best for the students or was it to make a statement on homosexualiy?

It is a scandal and wrong regardless of whether it was explicitly endorsed in the classroom. Catholic teachers should lead a life not contrary to the Gospel. So called private actions affect all of us. This used to be widely known until about 30 yrs ago or so.

Or I could have just said this. This is the difference. But again, I think one could argue that this would be true of any Catholic living with their boyfriend/girlfriend…not just homosexual ones.
Any Catholic living with a boyfriend/girlfriend while working for a Catholic school is likely to find themselves fired as well if it becomes public.

Yea, you know me, I am very much against the acts of homosexuality and same sex marriage.

I don’t know of anyone who isn’t guilty of a sexual sin, it’s whether they are teaching a sin as something other than a sin.

Could a sinners lifestyle have negative effects on a student? arn’t we all sinners?

I judge it in the case of “hate the sin, love the sinner.”

I would hardly fire a homosexual from employment who lived a homosexual lifestyle, I wouldn’t agree with it nor would I support it and if they tried to envolve such a lifestyle in the workplace than I would fire them.

However if the work lifestyle and the personal lifestyle are separate, than I don’t see a problem.

Of course, the lifestyle of a Catholic playing a certain role in society or in a Catholic institution could have negative effects on those under his or her authority. Children, young people and others tend to follow the examples/lifestyles of those above them like parents, teachers etc. This should be more than obvious.

Do you have a problem with certain people being excommunicated while other sinners are not?

You asked why the missing mass comparison is ridiculous? The poster already explained. It is that simple. There could be valid reasons for missing mass. Is there any valid reason for homosexuality?

I never followed the lifestyle of any teachers doing something Immoral or contrary to the church, because when we know better we do better. I didn’t know any teachers lifestyle’s anyway. They were there to teach, not disclose their personal life to students.

I don’t have a problem with that. In that case it is usually over a hard headed person incorrectly teaching.

If she was teaching anything other than acts of homosexuality being acts of grave depravity, than I would completely agree with firing her. However whats her personal life got to do with teaching something like maths or physics? I just don’t see the need to fire such a person.

I definatly see the need not to promote the acts of homsoexuality, but couldn’t this have been done just by talking to her about keeping her personal life and work life separate, by making sure she obeys the church’s teachings while ever at work? and setting an example which is that of the churchs teachings while ever at work?

However there are many Catholic teachers who do not have valid reasons to miss mass and do so anyway. I had a physics teacher who said that she was a C & E Catholic, which means she only makes an effort to attend mass on Christams & Easter.

I don’t think these people need to be fired from their work in order to set an example for others. I was more influenced by these people as an example of what not to do.

If such people were teaching something contrary to the Catholic Church/Faith, than I would absolutly agree with removing them from such a role.

In this case what did firing her achieve?

Just on a side note, while talking about missing mass, I apologise for the off-topic nature of this post.

When I talk about things such as missing mass for no valid reason, the church teaches us that this is a sin. However Christ does not want people to attend mass out of fear, guilt or by feeling forced. Christ wants us to attend mass because we want to, because we love him and want to recieve that enourmous gift where he gives himself to us through the eucharist.

Christ doesn’t want mass to be some routine that lacks all enthusiasm, he wants it to be another unique and loving encounter with him.

This is where I think people go wrong when they view missing mass for no valid reason as a sin. This is how people go to mass out of fear, guilt or the feeling of being forced to. This is how it can end up becoming some routine that lacks all enthusiasm. To miss mass is a sin because we have failed to harness/recieve that enourmous gift of the eucharist, or we have failed to see the eucharist as the enourmous gift that it is.

I agree, if she was living, or endorsing such a lifestyle while at work in anyway, I would completely agree with firing her. But couldn’t they have talked to her about the churchs stand on homosexuality and making sure she respects such a stand and keeps her personal life and work life separate?

By making sure she does not live or endorse her lifestyle of homosexuality in any way while ever at work?

I just don’t see why she needed to be fired. Whats her personal life got to do with teaching something like maths or physics? Like I said, I think we should oppose sin, but I don’t think we should be opressing sinners in any way.

The point is we cannot separate our moral life from any aspect of our entire life.

Every aspect of our lives are affected by our moral choices. That is the point.

My apologies, I missed where you had first said this.

Like I said in one of my other posts, I had a teacher in a Catholic shcool who was a C & E Catholic, who only very rarely ever attended mass, they would only make an effort on Christmas or Easter.

Would this teacher need to be fired? and if so, what would that have to do with teaching something like maths or physics?

Well it didn’t come up from school at all, if it did than I would understand, but it was from a parent who spotted it, I think thats like me seeing this teacher I described above as a C & E Catholic at home watching TV while mass was on.

As had been explained by Fix:
Every aspect of our lives are affected by our moral choices. That is the point.
A parent read the newspaper obituary which isn’t the same as watching Mass on TV while neglecting Sunday responsibility, saw it and brought it to the attention of the School.

As for the school talking about it, how do you know that they didn’t? But consider this, the fact that she had been in this relationship for some time (although not clear how long), do you really think she would have left her lesbian lover and reconciled with the Church?

When Henry VIII remarried, there was consequences of his actions, the same with Carla Hale.

What is underhanded is to teach at the Catholic school and live a life contrary to Catholic teaching. It is patently dishonest. The students and parents deserve better.
Amen

I think that she “endorsed” the lifestyle by mentioning her partner in the obituary.
Also, one’s personal life *does * influence other aspects of a person’s personality, and could affect their approch even to teaching. That type of lifestyle carries with it a lot of baggage and many other beliefs that are contrary to the Church in regard to the human person and his/her role in society.

Usually, the health/phys. ed. teacher is in charge of teaching Health classes. Inevitably, issues of sexuality arise in these classes. Even if homosexuality is not dealt with, other issues that are related will: use of condoms, surrogate motherhood, IVF, infidelity to the teachings of Christ through His Church…the list goes on.

The fact that this woman’s relationships with a lesbian partner is public knowledge presents a serious problem for the formation of the students. Who/what we are, and how we live our lives, has much more influence on others than our expertise in any area.
