JOLIETTE, Quebec, July 6, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Diocese of Joliette in the southwest of Quebec has announced that they will be hosting catechetical formation in the Cathedral next month, under the tutelage of the controversial and famously-dissident former Member of Parliament Fr. Raymond Gravel.

The training session is being held over two days, August 28 and September 25, and is meant for catechetical leaders, teachers, and parents. Fr. Gravel will be joined by Fr. Rémi Bourdon in leading the sessions.

And this man still allowed to teach in teh Church?

how are we to preach morals, if the seculars can simply say, why bother with me? look what your Church is teaching the people.

I don’t see how this is so suprising. Regardless of contraversy, I wouldn’t suggest he’s unqualified to do so…

really? You don’t have a problem with this? In light of what has gone on in Belgium and numerous other parts of the world, can you not see how this is part of a larger mission to destroy the church and promote a world-view absent of morals and God?

ones sins shouldn’t disqualify one from being able to teach, especially if one is learned enough in the faith

you know what they say, “those who can’t do, teach.”

i mean, who of us are not sinners? and when we sin, don’t we go against any number of Church teachings? so what differentiates an adherent of homosexuality from someone who has heterosexual lust? or one who desires money a lot?

Catechism 101:

There is a HELL of a difference between sinners (all of us) and OBSTINATE sinners (those who have NO intention of repenting).

I also suppose that when one’s sins are public for all to see that we should bury our head in the sand because of others hidden sins.

I do find it interesting that you label your post “Catechism 101” and then fail to quote the Catechism. I’m pretty sure the only one who can make that judgment call is God.

You’re right, God is the only one who can judge a soul. Maybe Father Gravel has recanted all his unorthodox views since his most recent editorial trashing the Catholic Church (I don’t think he’s written one for about two weeks now). But that’s about as likely as Obama and Sarah Palin deciding to run on the same ticket in 2012. Gravel has been about as obstinate a dissident as you can possibly be, writing editorials in national newspapers that said Catholics don’t have to follow what their bishops say, mocking key dogmas of the faith, etc. etc.etc… He even supported Henry Morgentaler getting the Order of Canada, a man who claims to have personally performed over ten thousand abortions! Is it possible to cause more scandal to the faithful than by publishing your heretical views in a national newspaper? I would’nt presume to judge his soul, but would I send my kids to his catechism class? Not likely. Doesn’t Aquinas say that it’s a sin Not to get angry when anger is justified? I’d say this a pretty good reason for the faithful to get angry.

back in the days a priest would throw out a female for daring to enter church without a viel, now all sorts of immorality is allowed to contaminate the youth of our beloved church 😦

Then you would be wrong. Both the Catechism and Canon Law distinguish those who are public and/or obstinate sinners.

Only God can judge the final disposition of a person’s soul but we can all judge whether actions are good or bad; dangerous or innocuous.

In my diocese, catechists are required to be living a public life in communion with the Church. That doesn’t mean we are all sinless but it does mean we can’t be publically living a sinful lifestyle or publically dissent from Church teaching. For example, in my own parish, a catechist who married outside the Church was immediately removed from her position.

A trainer of catechists is a catechist himself so this priest doesn’t meet the criteria. But that’s my diocese - evidently Joliette allows public obstinate sinners to be catechists. We can have an opinon about that.

Does this priest teach that sodomy is a sin? If he doesn’t he is a unrepentant sinner and there lies the difference.

well said.
this is what is happening. this is a time for discernment. those who dont have it, should ask from our Lord who gives freely.

so, you think that the Church should allow sinners to remain sinners? should we all partake of the Eucharist in sin?

Would it be appropriate to picket outside his catechism class with a sign quoting the catechism #2357?

If we did expect the following:

CBC to denouce us as hateful people who hate Gay people.
Be villified by our fellow Catholics as not trusting the Bishop to know what is best.
Be accused of acting as judge jury and executioner for making rash judgments about a person when the information we learned, we learned it from the person’s own mouth!!

Well said but I think its important to be prepared for any action that you take against the consequences of those actions. I am not suggesting that one shouldn’t do it, but just make sure its well thought out.

I’ve concluded that homosexuals are particularly attracted to the priesthood for at least these five reasons.
Code:
(1) No one is going to ask or wonder why they're not married.

(2) Many gays, understandably, want a position that is respected and the priesthood has been one.

(3) Many gays hope that their vow of celibacy will keep them from acting out their human sexuality - a way to repress and perhaps eradicate the temptations associated with it. One can respect this motivation if it succesfully keeps them from falling into
sexual sin.
Code:
(4) The fact that it is an all-male calling is attractive to some gays.

(5) There are certain things about Catholic ritual that may have a special appeal to some gays, perhaps especially the vestments.

There could be a sixth one. Gays as a group may be more sensitive to human need and also more sensitive generally. This can be a positive quality in priests, but not if it leads to inappropriate intimacy.

However, all this means problems. Just during the past week two area scandals bbroke in our area. (1) A priest was arrested for stealing over $1.3 million which he spent on a hidden but luxurious lifestyle, involving male escorts in New York City. (2) Another priest nearby has been accused of preying upon a young boy years ago, trying to intimidate and bribe him until the young man (now) has spoken out.

Difficult to know what to do. Gays who are consistently celibate may have a place in the priesthood, but apparently too many of them can't abide by their vows. Most of the scandal seems to have emanated with them. My guess would be that many more are sexually active with other adults, men or women, which is wrong considering their vows, but not a crime. One partial solution is to permit marriage of priests.
