I think mitex has a good point, that no one should be pushed into therapy under the impression that a change is guaranteed or that God would hate a person becuase of a same-sex-attraction. Hopefully these cases are the exceptional few. I do think change is possible, though it seems it would require a great deal of time and difficult work with the realization that it may become a life-long journey.

I’m just saying I never got cured and I’ve got ten other friends who dropped out of the same group that never experienced healing or freedom from homosexuality.

And I don’t see much healing with homosexuality. If anything I came away more broken and more depressed than I was before. I’m sure many other people can attest to that.
I have never advocated that it is a “disease” for which there is a cure. Jesus can give you the grace you need to deal with it in a way that honors Him.

A very dear friend of mine found Journey Into Manhood to be helpful:
peoplecanchange.com/jim/

He also goes to regular therapy sessions. I think it’s called reparative thereapy…maybe I’m wrong on the term…basically it’s therapy that delves deep into the past and works forward from your earliest experiences.

Anyway, he does still have SSA on occassions, but not as much…and his demeanor has drastically changed.

No thanks! Reparative therapy is what i went through last time. Not going there again. Did you guys not get the hint? I was hurt emotionally and spiritually by the experience. I have no intention of going back to any such program

I admit if someone wants to try it then try it. But their shouldn’t be all these promises out there that change is going to happen definitely.

And the fact that it gets promoted in this Church is scary and depressing.

Biblical explanations are medieval at best and inappropriate. The Church embraces science to tell us some the answers to that we do not know. Although at present no one can agree on the origins of homosexuality.

I suppose you also think the Earth is the center of the universe too right lol?
same sex attractions could easily be caused by concupiscence. Face it, man is fallen, since he has lost original justification all hell has broken loose within him.

The etiology of the attractions is utterly irrelevant to Church teaching.

To be fair, we are all just individual Catholics expressing our opinion here. There is no official Church position on what type of treatment (if any) those with same sex attraction must go through. The Church recognizes that this is an area for the social sciences to work out what best practices there might be. And there is room for differences of opinion.

My apologies once again this is very difficult for me. You are entitled to your opinions…

If God heals SSA its probably when a person dies. But I can say that a person who claims to have been cured 100% of their attractions or homosexual identity is probably lying. Reduced? I can believe it can be reduced or supressed. But don’t take stock in anyone who claims to have gone from homosexual to heterosexual.
How wonderfully judgemental, arrogant and offensive of you. You are all over CAF claiming great insight and knowledge into homosexual issues, saying all sorts of things about the need for acceptance, love, etc and then you have the unmerited audacity to make such a statement as this?

Unmitigated gall to not only insult any and all former gays and lesbians, but you ALSO insult the Grace of God, claiming in your mighty wisdom that such healing, if it occurs, does so at death?!?

Apologize.

I have read further into this thread now and see that mitex is claiming to come from a particular point of view. I did not choose to edit my post directly above, however, because it is an issue personal to me as well. Personal experience alone cannot form the basis for a blanket judgment as if true for all people, at all times.

mitex, I am sorry for your pain and those experiences which were hurtful to you. I hope that you are able to find healing for the pain in Christ and His Church.

wow, so this is what has become of my thread.

I get the feeling that not one, not one, cared to look at the conference talk by Dr. Nicolosi, but almost everyone is ranting on about
  • change is impossible
  • the church has no stance
  • my gut feeling tells me this and that
  • these bad therapists shouldn’t be going around promising full recovery to homosexuals!
and even one had the gut to say that offering therapy to people to are very unhappy with their ssa is a violation of human rights.
From now on, everyone please comment when you have already watched the talk.
I am not interested in hearing your personal feelings coloured by the fallen culture we live in.

I grew up in that myself and thought “gays are born like that”, until I came across serious research by Joseph Nicolosi, Janelle Hallman, read numerous testimonies on NARTH.com on other media.

You only need to do a few searches on google to see that people have indeed been healed in the name of Jesus from ssa. Whether you believe ssa is a gender deficit or merely a spiritual problem, Jesus is the healer for all.

Dr. Nicolosi himself claims that his successrate is the same as other psychotherapy… that is, not everyone gets healed, but very many, if they come of themselves, find out the root causes of their gender disorder and actually become able to, although late, to work on identifying with maleness and differentiation from femaleness (if they are male) plus figuring out a heck of a lot more about what is going on and why…

Its worth listening to.

michelleds the first night I walked into a ex-gay group shortly after starting RCIA I was told to deny something that was part of me and not tell anyone about it (and this group is sanctioned by the Church).

Because if I was to tell anyone about it that somehow made me a bad person. I got a card referring me to NARTH the first night (supposedly I was under on obligation to change my sexual identity ).

So I went along with it for several months six to be exact. I spent $1000 on a rip off therapist who used abusive techniques such as bioenergetics and aversion therapy.

To make a long story short my feelings only got bigger and stronger from the experience. If you didn’t experience an abusive time at ex-gay therapy well then good for you. But I know many people like myself and others who went through the fires of hell and back for nothing but broken promises.

And I know many “ex-gays” who have admitted that their still homosexuals or experience feelings! I cite Alan Chambers and Smid as the two biggest.

Michelleds if you want to believe that you have truly experienced healing and the power of Christ at work. Then go for it and believe it. That’s called faith and I can applaud that.

But for me there is no healing. Only reality of dealing with a situation you can’t change. That I am a homosexual and nothing I do will change that.

I see no reason to have a battle with you over this issue. I would, however, ask you to refrain from making blanket statements about things because you do not know all and everyone. What you perceive to be true for you, might not be true for others.

One question, how old are you?

Remember that thread you opened for people to describe how they got over it? You remember how there was a handful of women and no males?

A good book to balance Nicolosi’s claims…“Anything But Straight” is a great critique of the “ex-gay” movement.

You are obviously very pro gay.

And what little quaker group do you belong to, pray tell?

There are as many opinions and statements on gay ‘marriage’ as there are quaker convocations.

North Pacific Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends.🙂

One of my favorite quotes usuallly found in every Quaker Book of Disipline/Faith and Practice is

“The unity of Christians never did nor ever will or can stand in uniformity of thought and opinion, but in Christian love only.”
Thomas Story, 1737

Fair enough… 🙂

I acknowledge complete submission to Church teachings on homosexuality. I support traditional marriage and the family. I am celibate in accordance with the Church.

Where do I differ from many of the people on here? At the end of the day I still identify as gay because I believe it is part of me.

I support bullying and discrimination protections for gay people like me. And I think the Church has a ways to go in outreach.

But other than that I am behind the Church. I wouldn’t call that very pro-gay… I call it a “response with love and humility.”

Other than bullying and discrimination I’m not very pro-gay… No idea where you get that from. 🤷

In this, you are not alot different from a compulsive philanderer. I pray that you find comfort and peace in God’s love.
