And I’ve mentioned this before, but I’ll mention it again. I really, really love my German Shepherd. He is the best dog in the world. Must I have sex with him? **

I’ll bet he loves you as much as you love him, but hasn’t even asked himself that question. 👍

Believe me, I haven’t either. I only do it for the sake of argument 😃

Irish Wolf Hounds are better, but Poodles are sexier. At least that’s what my dog says.

Your dog is an Irish Wolf Hound supremacist?

I never expected such racism from our canine friends…

I can’t help but to think how much help posts like this are to the pro-gay agenda. Wouldn’t it be better to speak respectfully?
If we cannot present the truth in love, no one can come to see the truth.
…perhaps your loving approach is a result of the same sex relationship you were in?

After 50 years of experiencing the diminishing of our Church over these sexual perversions I prefer a more direct approach. Enough is enough!

The uncivilized barbarians have taken advantage of decent folks tolerance.

The key strategy of the gay agenda is to constantly work it into every part of our daily life so that the public becomes immune to it. Do you really think these constantly recurring gay/homo topics are seriously random and from the heart?

It’s time to start telling it like it is before we all suffer Gods wrath for becoming a heathen ba’al worshiping perverted pagan Nation. Good heavens, abortion is just modern day child sacrifice when you think it through…and how barbaric is that?

I was in a same-sex relationship for a long time. Please believe me, it is not the same as an opposite-sex relationship. You cannot judge it unless you have done it- please consider that without personal knowledge of the inner experience of homosexuality, you cannot know that it is actually love and not something disordered and harmful.
I have been in a same-sex relationship too so I guess I am qualified to judge then 👍
It’s true, love is love- and the Church teaches that the sacrificial, platonic love between two people in a same-sex relationship is valid and real (in the sense of friendship)- but that the sexual element of these relationships are not rooted in love. In our culture we are taught that love is synonymous with sexual desire- in fact sexual desire is far inferior to, and only points to, true sacrificial love.
I completely agree. There can be true love between people of the same sex, be they men or women. That love is called friendship.

This friendship can exist within a homosexual relationship. Although the sexual aspect, I believe, damages and can eventually destroy that friendship because it is not an expression of love but of hatred. That is because it involves the abuse and degradation of one or both of the participants.

You don’t do that to a man you love, your friend.

Friendship in the modern world has become quite shallow; love in the modern world has become too broad and too narrow, loving ice cream for example is only possible if love simply means like and when you say you love a person people assume you mean it in a sexual sense or are using hyperbole.

In the human race, some are born to hate and sin. I understand this, but why cant those of us, heterosexual or homosexual, just agree that love is love? Love is love no mater what shape or form. For me, I believe that whatever kind of sexuality is right. I would never degrade someones opinion on this, though. If you’re not a supporter of gay rights and homosexuality then why read things on it? Just to be rude and try to force someone who is uncomfortable into heterosexuality? Why cant people accept that what you say wont more than likely change someones firm opinions on something?
Not sure what you’re trying to say here (e.g., “I believe that whatever kind of sexuality is right” is pretty much a sentence fragment). But if you’re asking why people who are anti-homosexuality would read threads on Catholic Answers that aren’t anti-homoesxuality, well, why shouldn’t they? You have a duty in charity to chastise sinners and remind people of their obligation.

Seeking sex with another person like oneself springs from a difficulty in loving and respecting oneself. It is an attempt to fill a void created by that difficulty.
There is no mystery in it- neither party is really and completely giving the self to the other- but only seeking to find the self.

Please prayerfully consider this with an open mind.
Interesting you mention this. “Love,” properly considered, is the ordering of one’s will toward another’s good. It thus requires a desire that the beloved live up to the excellence of their own nature, i.e., by avoiding sin. Perhaps what homosexuals mean when they insist that “love is love” is rather something like mere “affection,” which of course is not an unqualified good.

I have heard the “homosexuality as narcissism” argument before. Not sure what to think of it. My mind is not really set up to process Platonic/Augustinian kinds of arguments. It’s enough for me that natural law forbids sexual perversion.

Well, if they did not have fellows like him to point to, I am confident they would invent someone like him.
In a situation like that wouldn’t it be perfectly reasonable for them to be able to designate the other as a “spouse” so that if one worked the other could get health care benefits or the other gets survivor’s benefits?
Reasonable? As in beneficial? Maybe. But good? No.

A spouse is a woman’s husband or a man’s wife. A spouse gets benefits because they are necessary for the spouse to discharge his/her duty to his/her family.
And I’ve mentioned this before, but I’ll mention it again. I really, really love my German Shepherd. He is the best dog in the world. Must I have sex with him?
Man-animal rights, man. Their love is just as valid as anyone else’s. Who are you to deny their equal rights? Human dignity demands equal treatment somehow. etc. etc.

lol.

Well, you’ve got a point, insofar as there are at least some saints (e.g., Louis IX) who were explicit in their policy to kill any blasphemer they encountered. Indeed this was the policy for much of Christendom. They seem to have been markedly better off in a number of important ways for it.

On the other hand, personal vitriol is a dangerous habit and attitude to cultivate. I respond occasionally with a harsh word to deserving fools (and usually get warned for it), but you have to be extra-careful to avoid getting too nasty for the sake of your own soul.

Very important, and very true. (Liberal) modernity has endeavored to destroy all that makes life valuable and meaningful. We shouldn’t be surprised about this – that was its intention from the beginning, and it has never shied from saying it.

That’s true, but close friendships are still possible.

“Love” in the modern world is devoid of meaning. It’s conflated with fondness, infatuation, affection, desire for closeness or simply sexual desire. And when desire ceases, “the love is gone” and it’s time to get a divorce. It’s only logical because long before gay marriage became an issue, regular marriage was redefined as something two people who “love” each other do because they are “in love.” It’s such a shame I can’t find a barfing smiley on this forum software because I’d “love” to put one right here.

I generally see “true love” in the objective sense - desiring or willing the other person’s well-being. Although I guess for that love truly to be true, the well-being one must will for should be both physical and spiritual. Still, that’s a fairly narrow definition, quite devoid of emotional value - I’m not a fan of nauseating sentimentality obscuring rational discussion.

That said, the “true love” present in a good friendship naturally has a subjective aspect to it and necessarily includes feelings of fondness and affection. The word, “love,” however, has become so debased in our modern culture that it’s probably best to use ancient Greek words for the different kinds in any serious discussion about it.

I’m blind. How was that intention expressed and what exactly has it never shied away from saying?

To give just one example, one of liberalism’s central claims is that we ought to abandon religion or at least marginalize it socially in order to avoid war and violence. Atheists in particular make this argument all the time.

Quite an alarming claim on its face. If religion is true, then it ought to be defended, with war and violence if absolutely necessary, against those who would deny it its proper place in the ordering of man’s social and ethical life. And if it’s false, we ought to abandon it because it’s false, not because it causes war and violence.

Love is not tolerance

BISHOP FULTON J. SHEEN****Christian love bears evil, but it does not tolerate it.

Code:
http://www.catholiceducation.org/images/authos/Sheen8.JPG *Christian love bears evil, but it does not tolerate it. *
It does penance for the sins of others, but it is not broadminded about sin.
*The cry for tolerance never induces it to quench its hatred of the evil philosophies that have entered into contest with the Truth. *
It forgives the sinner, and it hates the sin; it is unmerciful to the error in his mind.
*The sinner it will always take back into the bosom of the Mystical Body;
but his lie will never be taken into the treasury of His Wisdom. *
*Real love involves real hatred:
whoever has lost the power of moral indignation and the urge to drive the buyers and sellers from the temples
has also lost a living, fervent love of Truth. *
*Charity, then, is not a mild philosophy of “live and let live”;
it is not a species of sloppy sentiment. *
Charity is the infusion of the Spirit of God,
which makes us love the beautiful and hate the morally ugly.
Thank you for this!

Archbishop Sheen please pray for us!

It’s bizarre to say the least, on the one hand it argues that it is narcissism because it is a desire of the same, on the other hand they also argue that any difference in traits is clearly a desire for what is different

Marriage today has been stripped of children, basically today it is a piece of paper saying they are running a joint household that gives them legal benefits for it. If in a household one person works and the other takes care of the home side of things then they are basically filling that role, by calling it a domestic partnership you make it clear that it isn’t a marriage, it is a partnership in domestic life.
You probably weren’t aware, but there was something quite a bit similar in mediæval France, affrèrement was a contract that basically formed a joint household and united the entrants assets (some people viewing it from the modern perspective think they were a form of same sex marriage, they weren’t, but it is an understandable confusion).
That’s true, but close friendships are still possible.

Indeed, the perversion of language is why when describing the “seven deadly sins” I use vainglory instead of pride so I can describe it without modern day baggage attached to pride.

Love in a deep friendship seems to meet your definition of true love more than “marriage” today does. Once upon a time there was a certain physicality attached to friendship too.

An example of the much older view of friendship:
Rev. Jeremy Taylor:
“After all this, treat thy friend nobly, love to be with him, do to him all the
worthinesses of love and fair endearment, according to thy capacity and his;
bear with his infirmities till they approach towards being criminal; but never
dissemble with him, never despise him, never leave him. Give him gifts and
upbraid him not, and refuse not his kindnesses, and be sure never to despise the
smallness or the impropriety of them. “Confirmatur amor beneficio accepto:” “A
gift (saith Solomon) fasteneth friendships.” For as an eye that dwells long upon
a star, must be refreshed with lesser beauties and strengthened with greens and
looking-glasses, lest the sight become amazed with too great a splendour; so
must the love of friends sometimes be refreshed with material and low caresses;
lest by striving to be too Divine it becomes less human: it must be allowed its
share of both: it is human in giving pardon and fair construction, and openness
and ingenuity and keeping secrets; it hath something that is Divine, because it
is beneficent; but much because it is eternal”

I am not saying to tolerate it. I am saying to state it in a direct way, to explain it so that others can come to understanding- and to present ourselves.

Of course there is a small portion of the population who will never listen- those promoting an agenda. These do not matter.

However, there is also an enormous section of the population who has been convinced by this that homosexuality is good. They are more open-minded and more numerous- and if they see that the arguments against homosexuality are rooted not in logic and concern, but in personal attacks- certainly this cannot help those who are genuinely searching to come to the truth.

I’ve been to confession over my same-sex relationship. It was done out of ignorance. If God has forgotten it, I hope you can too. And in love and respect perhaps some of that ignorance can be dispelled for others. Remember that most sin is committed in pursuit of a perceived good.

See, given I myself am homosexual, I’ve obviously thought about this and I’ve talked to other homosexuals a lot trying to find common denominators and root causes. And so I’m not sure that homosexuality is somehow a manifestation of narcissism. My gut feeling says ‘no.’

From my experience in talking to homosexual peers, I think the common denominator is almost always a deep, emotional wound sustained in childhood, most typically a failure to bond with the father at a very early and crucial stage of mental development, which for many is probably what lies at the bottom of the unhealthy and excessive desire to bond with somebody of one’s own sex.

While some are successful at later bonding with their male peers or even their father and never exhibit any tell-tale signs of homosexuality, quite often the damage is already done. Many others fail to relate to and bond with males, leading to rejection, and seek the company of women, over-empathising with them and becoming effeminate, and as a reaction to rejection they develop a paradoxical hatred of men.

Another significant potential cause I’ve noticed among homosexuals I’ve known is sexual abuse, but it was always too sensitive a subject for me to ask questions about, so I cannot guess at the mechanism through which that might lead to homosexuality.

See, I think phoooiee is right about taking a loving approach. The perversion of homosexuals is typically limited to the fact that they are attracted to members of the same sex, and for many it is probably a manifestation of an emotional trauma that they’ve been carrying with them since childhood. Not all homosexuals are nice people, but neither are all straight guys, and many are, apart from their homosexuality, pretty normal.

It is precisely because of the acceptance I, and others like me, have found in Christ’s Church, that I can live a moral life and have hope that despite this disorder of the mind, I too will one day be able to see God face to face. Hate the sin, not the sinner.

Researchers were trying to find out why homosexuality is 7 times more prevalent in men than woman. Indeed they found it higher when men were absent in the family. Essentially during early childhood (3-5 years as I recall) a father “teaches” a boy how to be a man. In fatherless homes there is excessive female interaction.

It’s the fact that homosexuals are so pushy about their cause, and how annoying they are. They refuse to acknowledge anything is wrong with them, and if you suggest there is, then you are the bad guy some of this is Christians’ fault given the horrifying methods some have used to attempt to turn people straight). They want their lifestyle to be accepted as “normal” when it is not. I’m sorry, but they are not normal.

There’s also the new hypocrisy and reverse discrimination going on in society that are embracing the gays. Gays who attempt to become straight or reject the gay society are treated as traitors, in denial, or just listening to what society wants them to do. Of course, a straight person who ventures into homosexuality is just accepting who they are.

They also get mad anytime a church doesn’t fully embrace them. And no, I’m not talking about wanting the churches to accept them. The church should accept all sinners. But that’s not enough, it is as if they want the Bible rewritten to state that homosexuality isn’t a sin. They go on and cry about Salvation Army or Chick Fil A’s charities that are supposedly anti-gay. For one thing, this makes me want to eat at Chick Fil A purely out of spite, but there’s also something more meaningful behind that. Homosexuality is a sin, pure and simple. The church doesn’t oppose homosexuality for fun. It is actually in the Bible as a sin. Therefore you can’t expect church owned organizations to donate to those who actively support a sin.

It is also important that females teach differently to males than men teach to males. The formation of male identity is singularly available from other males, and not as impactfully or convincingly from females, as a whole. Women talk; men show. It’s the showing (and watching and doing) which results in imprinting for the male. And it’s paternal acceptance of individual masculinity which confirms a male in that maleness; maternal acceptance of that individuality is a weak substitute when it comes to male self-image.

Or if it is caused by prenatal influences it is because to make a male gay would require insufficient levels of testosterone during brain development whereas for a female to be made lesbian would require additional testosterone (the former is a lot more likely to happen).

My point is that the fact that homosexuality is much more common in boys than girls proves nothing other than homosexuality is much more common in boys than girls.

The popes have declared that homosexuality is a moral disorder. Noone wants to force a same-sex attracted person into a life of heterosexuality. A person who suffers from heterosexual lasciviousness AND the homosexually attracted person are called to lives of chastity. While I agree that “love is love”, there are many kinds of love. The Church recognizes Caritas (also called agape in Greek) as the perfect form of love, it is the selfless, unconditional kind of love that God has for us (Pope Benedict XVI - Deus Caritas Est). It is the root word of Charity, talked about in St. Paul’s Letter to the Corinthians (13:13).

Then, there is Philia, brotherly love, or the sort of love one has for a friend, or generally non-sexual affection for someone else. It is the root word of philanthropy (love of mankind).

Then there is eros, named after the Greek diety of desire, root of the word Erotica and it is often intimately connected with sexual desire, although not exclusively. It can also be used to denote desire for something, such as a particular kind of food.

The problem with English is that is makes no distinction with these different forms of love, where the bible, specifically the New Testament, was written almost exclusively in Koine Greek, a language that very clearly differentiates between the various kinds of love.

I can say

I love my wife (agape or caritas) and it means that I will serve her unselfishly and unconditionally. You cannot say that you love (agape) cheesecake, because cheesecake is an inanimate object with no need to be served.

I love my wife (philas) and it means that I enjoy being in the company of my wife. However, if my wife is in a crabby mood, I may not enjoy being in her company.

I love my wife (eros) and it means that I desire her sexually. Or, I may love (eros) cheesecake.
