I believe the cause of homosexuality varies in each instance. Sometimes you may be born with same-sex attraction. Other times you may develop it in your early childhood due to certain events.
Are you sure one can inquire? That’s an opinion that maybe is "disrespecting "?

It all depends on what you mean by “homosexuality”, as many who comment on this blur the distinction between people who are attracted to the same sex, and people who actually have sexual relations with the same sex. Or seem to assume that those who have such attractions are unable to control or resist them.

But last I checked, same-sex attraction is not something that is considered sinful by the Church, but having homosexual sex, is.

Also, note this would also be sinful for a straight person having same sex elations, as can occur in cases of prostitution, and there are a large category of men who have sex with other men, but do not consider themselves homosexual. In some cultures, only having “receptive” homosexual sex is considered a sign of being “homosexual”.
What exactly is a “same sex elation”?

I agree, but even though we don’t understand the reason for it, we need to lead people away from it as we would when dealing with an attraction to pornography. Pornography destroys a person’s soul as it puts desires in a place where our Creator did not intend it to be. This desire and attraction is for married couples living according to God’s purpose. A same sex attraction will also destroy a person’s soul especially if they act on the desire. If they cannot control the attraction, they must fight the desire to act on it. Everyone has a weakness, and turning to God for help when we are weak is necessary for forgiveness and healing.
Yes I agree with and I believe I understand the Church’s stance. Pornography is a problem that is rampant. My question was though related to “causes” or “possible causes”. The thing is because of politics SSA was removed from the DSM as a problem. If it’s not a problem, why research the causes. We have been effectively politically shutup. I can ask this of bestiality, transvestism, ec cetra. I am not just picking on homosexuality (SSA). But another problem some don’t acknowledge that of masturbation. Now the way I understand it; it could start as anxiety. Then move on to habit and with the fuel of pornography and deteriorating familial relations, a habit. Then from habit to a way of life.

My interest is in causes or the cause. Of curiosity of such things. I know people with SSA and I think of them no differently than anyone else. Know the cause, find a cure? There are so many out there now without a family. Mine broke up when I was 8 when my father died. No one has a “perfect” family but it’s so important.

God Bless.

Salutations,
All I can say is the debate on nature vs nurture and molestation at young ages. I was a critical care RN for 44 yrs. I ask 50 of my homosexuality pts if they had been molested. Of this 50 (small survey) all said yes. Personal experience: brother molested at age 11 by neighbor. Mom told me years later. He turned bisexual. In trouble in school, alcohol. Friends would drop him on police steps drunk for fun. Ended up in a Christian Brother reform school. C/O being beaten for infractions. Never mentioned to me molestation in reform school but I was younger like 12yo. What would I know? Went to California as adult. Became biker, almost got into hell’s angels. Did get to jail. Lived w woman in trailer in relationship. Later gay guy got him off drugs. First, gay relationship. He was dying. Called me. Told him to come to me. He got off drugs, not alcohol. Dying from cirrhosis and bleeding esophageal varices. Like varicose veins in legs but around esophogus. Hemmorhage from mouth and rectum. We get to save them about 3 to 5 times but then it’s too much on their bodies. Tried to slice wrists one night. Found out from my son when he was 35yo that my brother started to touch him in shower at age of 12yo. that night but stopped and then tried suicide. Me, screaming scripture verses through locked bathroom door. Had to go to ER. He started bleeding. Sent to Shreveport hospital. We were moving to Ft Bragg same time. Had to leave him in hospital. Signed out AMA. Went to other alcoholic brother who had varices. I had a baby. Bobby came to see new niece. Went back to S. Ca. Where he settled near second brother and died 3 weeks later from Esophageal varicial Hemmorhage at age 40yo. Other brother w master’s degree died same way at age 59yo hemorrhaging to death on vent in chemical coma. Do you realize if Bobby molested my son, the guilt and grief I would have still have today. How my compassionate heart leads me to situations of stupidity. So, there is a resonable run down of one bi-sexual. Other brother when drunk=100% of the time while a probation officer teaching DUI classes w blood alcohol levels higher than students. He touched his daughters Boobs in stupor thinking it was his wife. They stopped him and all loved him. Curious! Well hope that helps with some observation. God only knows. Nephew in law wanted wife to call him girl’s name and wore some of her clothes. Reading Bible daily now. States gay state is abomination to the Lord and is fighting his demons.
Definitely argue this bathroom thing. Confused kids use handicapped bathroom. First graders shouldn’t be encouraged in sex choices. Teens may not be honest to get in girl’s bathrooms. Puberty is time enough to deal w this. Why not treat a boy w more testosterone and counseling to be what your body is. More estrogen for girls and counseling. Could work sometimes before body mutilation.
God loves us all but not our sins.
in Christ’s love
Tweedlealice sorry so long. In ER, w car accidents and transvestite prostitutes brought in= family pain. One had been molested behind our HS by 8 boys. God help him. His counselor felt he was gay???
All I say here is, well I’m not a statistician but 50 out of 50? Could that be accurate? That is a small population though.

It is a temptation and a sin. It exists because we live in a world where sin exists and we are not perfect people. It is a weakness for some individuals and it could lead to greater sins. We all have our weaknesses. My weakness is anger. I have had it all my life. The problem with anger is it can lead to hatred, hatred lead to all types of evil, and it also destroys the soul. It may lead to revenge. murder etc. for some individuals.

Why do I have this weakness? Why is not as important as what you do with it. You have a free will, you can act on it or fight it, as Saint Augustine did in his life with his weaknesses. It is not easy, but I believe the reward is great. God knows what was placed in your path. You can defeat the enemy with your will power and love for Him and His ways.

In my case I pray more now, I ask for forgiveness and help from God to love these people whom I feel treated us unjustly. I read the Bible and have a few proverbs I try to repeat daily that give me courage not to be angry. I also pray for their souls. I have not conquered my bad feelings toward them, but letting the anger get out of control is a soul destroyer.

Fight the battle daily and don’t give up. I like the quote you wrote from St. Augustine at the bottom of your post. He is so wise and honest, and a good example for all of us.

What do you mean by that?
Some people are so wrapped up with political correctness and other propaganda that they believe homosexuality is normal. A choice some make. They are not looking at the purpose of sexuality. Procreation. How can two of the same sex procreate? You don’t ask why are people heterosexual; that’s because it’s perceived as normal. So you don’t ask why are people homosexual. Otherwise you are not perceiving it as normal and a bigit. These people usually turn out though to be the biggest bigits out there.

You are right. Too people in a same-sex relationship can not procreate. Some gay rights activists like Dan Savage are anti-Christian bigots.

I was raised Catholic for the first 10 years of my life, and then my father died an I was non religous until recently. I began to go back to mass for the past couple months and went to confession. Am I a Catholic?
You are a Catholic but…

like the student who struggles to get the same answer that his Calculus professor got
(knowing that if his answer differs from the professor’s answer, he is the one who needs to change and conform his views to the professor)…

you must conform your views to that of the Church.

You must acknowledge, as a Catholic, that Christ founded One Church, and that this Church is the Catholic Church.

Idk if they are born like that, but I know it’s near impossible to change them. We need to love them. Yes, homosexual BEHAVIOR is wrong, but we can still love them.

Yes. What’s bolded is exactly what the Catholic Church teaches.

IDK that I would try to change someone’s sexual attraction. I don’t understand why one would care what someone is attracted to. But then there’s Alan Turing. Terrible things were done to him. I think maybe chemical castration. Why is that needed. Even now days they want to do it to certain criminal offenders. Castration is mutilation. Chemical castration IDK. It sterilizes someone but they still have sex attraction. It’s pointless. That isn’t love to anyone.

If someone has lusts because their will is hard and perverse. Then they will commit sexual sins and it’s up to God to help them. That’s why we have penance. Same or opposite sex sexual sin.

Alan Turing was “outed” during a time when homosexuality was illegal in his country (Britain).

As punishment, he was not chemically castrated, but was ordered to take estrogen (for some reason, they thought then that that would “cure” the behavior).

He chose to take cyanide instead.

I don’t in any way sympathize with homosexuality or the other letter-codes for alternative sexuality, but I’d be the first to admit that what was done to him was shameful.

There are certain things about homosexuality (sexual deviations) that might think it be genetics. Actions, speech, that might be considered ‘stereotypes’. Sometimes you see this sometimes not. Ok now for what I am getting at, and I think this is all that matters. You’ve seen me post about will. Augustine says this, “will that is perverse”. Where does will “come from”?

As I remarked elsewhere:
I’d say that the will resides in our soul somewhere between the mind and the natural body. Either can trigger it, and both are needed to carry out an action.

I don’t know what the consensus is on homosexuality. Do people believe you are just born that way? Or do certain events in the childhood lead to this? There must be something you can do because culpability is involved. If someone was born that way I would think they would not be culpable. 🤷
According to the American Psychological Association, the cause of homosexuality is still unknown so there is no consensus. Many in the gay community believe that they are born gay but that belief is no different than any other belief someone can make up when there’s a lack of evidence to back it up.

The studies that would put to homosexuality being inborn are the gene studies and the hormonal studies. Both studies fail to account for homosexuality because REPLICATIONS of each yields inconsistent results and results that don’t account for all subjects that the study said was supposed to be impacted. For example, if genes caused homosexuality, then you would expect identical twins who have 100% of the same DNA to both turn out to be gay but yet that is not the case.

Secondly, even if homosexuality was inborn, there is some developing evidence that it can still be changed based on biology and environment. When I say change, I mean the change happens on its own and not based on choice or gay conversion therapy, etc.

From my time of studying the issue, I believe that there’s more than one cause to homosexuality and that it could vary from person-to-person.

Not necessarily true. Though identical twins start off genetically identical at first. Even after the first cellular division there different mutations events that occur that cause their DNA and gene expression to be altered right there. They develop more or less independently off each other during the pregnancy so its possible for them to have different gene expression from the get-go. Interesting article: scientificamerican.com/article/identical-twins-genes-are-not-identical/

However, that being said, the concordance rate is low to suggest that while genetics may be a factor, it is not the only factor. More than likey there is a complex interplay of many factors: genetics, inutero environment, social factors, epigenetics, environmental factors, and probably unknown critical periods and sequential events required to happen (Not to mention each factor probably differs in importance for different people).

All this being said, the morality of same sex sexual acts doesn’t change. According to Catholic teaching it is objectively disordered period.

Egg-zactly.

Even if it were shown to be 100% caused by genes…that would be irrelevant as to whether the attraction is disordered or not.

Alcoholism, impatience, desire for chocolate, bad temper, inability to be monogamous…may all be proven one day to be 100% genetically caused…but that doesn’t mean we must cede to our genetic predispositions.

Imagine if a philandering husband used that excuse: honey, it’s my genes! I am just programmed to sleep around with other women.

Does anyone think that would be a legitimate excuse?
