Masturbation is harmful to yourself from a psychosexual perspective and this can create problems for people wanting to enter in or who are in relationships. It is just like porn in many ways. Our sexuality was created to be both psychologically and physically expressed as a pro-creative and unitive loving bond between a man and woman. Masturbation is the total opposite. It’s a self-fish act of sexually stimulating one self. There is no love, no bond, no procreation or unity. This is the reason why many people suffer from depressive feelings after masturbation.
Do you have any scientific evidence for these blanket claims of harm?

Why ask for scientific evidence for something that screams common sense?
Personal experience also informs me that masturbation and/or sexual addiction is ummmm, harmful to one’s self and one’s relationships.

If it’s real common sense there should be ample evidence to back it up.

Your personal experience is not necessarily reflective of others’ experiences. An alcoholic may experience devastating consequences from taking one drink, while another person can drink in moderation with no ill effects.

Think about your analogy a little further. In the context of the real life issue we are talking about, taking a drink does not solve a problem. Ever. Just as masturbation will not solve the problem this woman has with sexual feelings.
Masturbation does not solve a problem, it just makes a person feel good for a moment. It’s common sense.

Masturbation is not necessarily used to “solve a problem”. It can be merely recreational, like moderate social drinking, playing sports, watching TV or any number of morally-neutral activities. Of course, any of these things can be done to excess, in which case they do become a problem.

Recreational…in that case, we’ll see be seeing you masturbate at the local bar this Thursday night, right at halftime of the basketball game, to the cheers of the recreation-loving patrons surrounding you?

Prolly not. Why is that?

For the same reason a married couple would not have sex at the local bar.

I have read some studies, articles and personal experiences concerning the negative issues associated with masturbation. When I find them I will post them.

In one study I remember, they compared the areas of brain activity and chemical or hormone release in the body in sex vs masturbation.

Although, like the other poster stated, it’s common sense to see how masturbation is harmful. If you use the basis of our physiology, biology and psychology it’s easy to see why, like I posted before.

The issue is, in this post sexual revolution age, most people don’t see masturbation as harmful, as it’s openly and widely accepted and promoted as something beneficial and totally normal from a young age. One of the first things I learnt in school, when they taught about the birds and the bees, is that masturbation is a good practice, one should do it as often as they can and it’s a good way to learn and discover your body

Exactly. Now we are getting somewhere.
What do you mean by that? I merely meant that some legitimate activities are, by social custom, conducted in private. The fact that something is done in private doesn’t make it wrong.

All recreational activities have some sort of benefit to the individual. What benefit does masturbation have?, instant disordered sexual gratification and pleasure.

A more realistic comparison to masturbation would have been recreational drug use. Both induce instant pleasure and harm the individual in some way.

Again I ask, what exactly is the harm? Simply declaring something to be harmful doesn’t make it so.

To go back, you claim that masturbation is morally neutral, and that it can be done for merely recreational purposes. Yet you would not do it in full sight of others under “normal” social circumstances, as you would almost any other recreation. Even recreational activities that can be done in solitary, a game of cards for instance, could also be done in full view of others and be deemed appropriate.
What is different about masturbation, that you would not do it in full sight of “normal” society?

To go one step further, what is it, that is hardwired into every human being, that causes a healthy sense of modesty in this issue (masturbation or sexuality in general), and sets it apart from other recreational activities?

Again I ask, what exactly is the harm? Simply declaring something to be harmful doesn’t make it so.
What is the purpose of the sexual organs, the sex act, the act of ejactulation? Why are men and women created differently from one another in a completely complimentary sense?
And if there is a purpose to all of this, why would one pursue a course of action contrary to the naturally given (common) sense?
A very cheap analogy would be, would you use your hand to hammer a nail? No it’s not designed for that.

As I said, for the same reason that a married couple would not have sex in public. It involves activity and exposure of body parts which in our society are not done in public.

To use a non-sexual example: a nice hot shower or bath is a recreational activity for many people. But you would not bathe in front of an open window, in full view of passers-by. Does that make recreational bathing wrong? No - like sexual activity, it’s just something that’s done in private to conform with societal norms.

But that’s exactly the question at hand. Why are there societal norms concerning both masturbation or sexuality general, and showering (part of the same topic)? You are claiming that nothing sets these activities, involving the human form, apart from others. But you are admitting they are set apart in some way. Why are they set apart? Or special, to use an overused phrase.

In one study I remember, they compared the areas of brain activity and chemical or hormone release in the body in sex vs masturbation. Another they showed, men whose sexual experience is shaped and influenced by masturbation, is that they take the same attitude and sexual behavior to real sex. Masturbation vastly different from sex. It’s like men who watch porn and want the same in reality. Obviously this can be harmful in the context of marriage.

I assume you are person who masturbates, you may not feel you are causing any harm, and this is not obvious for everyone. Not everyone is affected the same way or to the same degree. Try going cold turkey and see if this makes a difference. Not only the benefit to your own soul, to God and self-respect of your own body,

This is why it’s called reproductive anatomy and not pleasure anatomy, lol.

Although pleasure is part of it fortunately for us. The momentary physical pleasure, plus the peace and joy and fulfillment resulting from rightly ordered sexuality between spouses.

I can see where some are coming from, that masturbation is a seemingly harmless activity that almost every human being has done at least once. And that we should not live in inordinate shame if we have done that.
But in the context of the OP, good advice needs to be given. Chastity is worth pursuing, and it should not be discarded just because it is difficult and masturbation provides momentary relief.

Clearly a purpose - the primary purpose - of sexual organs is reproduction. But how do you know it’s the only purpose? In fact, the ease with which they can be stimulated outside of intercourse, and the intense pleasure which this action can create, would suggest that solitary pleasure is an intended secondary purpose.

An analogy would be our other senses. The vital purpose of our sense of taste is to motivate us to take in the nutrition needed for life, and help us avoid eating dangerous things. But we also eat for pure pleasure, sometimes eating things that have no nutritional value or may even be mildly harmful. So in that sense, expressed in Church-speak, eating a Twinkie is “gravely disordered”.
