Honoring Mary is Biblical, according to the bible.

I looked up the Latin word for “honor.” Christians use the Latin word, “latria” to designate the kind of honor or worship due to God alone. There is another Latin word, “dulia” to designate the kind of honor given to the saints. Unfortunately, our English language does not have different words for “honor” with such clear-cut theological meanings.

Mary receives the highest honor (“dulia”) of all the saints. ”Honor” is used in the same way as when we “honor” our mother and father.
Sorry to be a pedant, but I think those two words are Greek, not Latin.

Why do we honor Mary?
  1. When we honor Mary, we honor God. For God is with Mary. *And the angel being come in, said unto her: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.(Luke 1:28)
  2. Mary always prays and intercedes for us, so that St Paul urges us to follow her example. First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people (1 Timothy 2:1)
  3. Mary is a loving mother who knows our needs and intercedes for us, even before we ask her. *When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” *(John 2:3)
  4. Mary teaches us to obey Jesus in all things. His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” (John 2:5)
  5. We are called to love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. (Romans 12:10) Surely Mary, the Mother of God, is deserving of greater love, affection and honor than all our brothers and sisters in Christ?
  6. God is our Father and Mary our Mother, we honor them as commanded by our Lord; “Honor your father and mother”—this is the first commandment with a promise: * Ephesians 6:2

Can you show me where in those passages that only Roman or Orthodox clergy can incur the metaphysical change for the bread and wine to change into the body and blood of Christ?? Again, who is correct when interpreting Scripture??
Not in those passages, but I believe it does somewhere in Matthew.😉

Mary is one of God’s elect, chosen to give birth to Jesus in the flesh. God knew that He could trust her, that is what God’s elect are all about. People that God can trust to perform certain tasks for Him like the prophets. Jesus did honor His mother as the fourth commandment tells us so. Honor your mother and father (your mother and father in the flesh).

If you read Matthew 12: 46 - 50, it says, 'He was still speaking to the crowds when His mother and His brothers appeared; they were standing outside and they were anxious to have a word with Him. But to the man that told Him this Jesus replied, ‘Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?’ And stretching out His hand towards His disciples He said, ‘Here are my mother and my brother. Anyone who does the will of my Father in heaven, he is my brother and sister and mother.’

God is our Father. I don’t recall seeing where where Jesus tells us to ask Mary for anything or to pray to her for anything. I do know this for sure which was spoken by Jesus Himself, ‘I am the way, the truth and life. No one can come to the Father except through me.’ Jesus also says, ’ If you ask for anything in my name, I will do it.’ When the disciples asked Jesus how do we pray, Jesus replied with, ’ Our Father, who art in heaven…’ Where does Jesus even mention that we are supposed to go to Mary for anything?

I am not trying to show any disrespect for Mary. I think she was a wonderful, strong and brave person for what she did knowing the consequences of her actions, she could have been put to death. But she trusted God, just like we are supposed to. Jesus Christ is the way, He will guide us back to God. He did say to pick up your cross and follow me. He didn’t say to stop along the way and pray for assistance from somebody else or seek guidance from another. To me, if we do these things, then we are not trusting Jesus, we are disrespecting Jesus and we are pretty much saying that He can’t guide us back to God Himself. It’s one thing to talk to others, but who is the one that can really teach you Truth?

The foruth commandment
" you shall honor your mother and your father "
From the nativity narrative
" she gave birth to her firstborn and named him jesus "
Jesus was circumcised, so he was taught to followed the teachings of moses, including the Ten Commandments.
Therefore he followed the fourth commandment to honor his father, God the Father.
Also he honored his mother, Mary. To do otherwise would be to violate the fourth commandment. This would be a sin under God. But Jesus is without sin.
Now, we are to be imitators of christ, according to saint paul. Therefore do what Jesus does. So since he honors Mary, we are to honor Mary.
Mary believed that Jesus is the messiah. So she lives in heaven. And she is not ‘dead’

All the things I have stated are clearly attested to in the bible. I haven’t memorized the "addresses " but I can look them up.
Thus the bible supports honoring Mary.

I’m not trying to be crass here, but
I’m saying that there is no evidence that only the Roman Catholic church can correctly interpret Scripture. There is also no evidence to say that they interpret it correctly at any rate.
:hmmm:I’m not trying to be crass either, yean,(though I freely admit that I am being;) no end of snarky), but I’ve been :nerd:reading my Bible for nigh unto 6 decades now, & I dinnae hae http://bestsmileys.com/clueless/1.gif any remembrance of a verse saying: “Poster Proallen can correctly interpret Scripture”.
But hey–that’s me.

  2. Mary always prays and intercedes for us, so that St Paul urges us to follow her example. First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people (1 Timothy 2:1) Couldn’t find Paul’s reference to Mary. Paul’s speaking of those living on this side of death and glorification praying for each other.
  3. Mary is a loving mother who knows our needs and intercedes for us, even before we ask her. *When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” *(John 2:3) Mary was still on earth when this happened. How can you use this verse to say what’s she’s doing now? The Bible says there is but One Mediator between God and man; IT also says Jesus ever lives to make intercession for us. I see NO reason Jesus needs help.
  4. Mary teaches us to obey Jesus in all things. His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” (John 2:5) And Jesus seemed to have rebuked her before answering her request.
  5. We are called to love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. (Romans 12:10) Surely Mary, the Mother of God, is deserving of greater love, affection and honor than all our brothers and sisters in Christ? How you make the jump from us honoring other more than ourselves to Mary deserving the greatest honor is baffling to me???
  6. God is our Father and Mary our Mother, we honor them as commanded by our Lord; *“Honor your father and mother”—this is the first commandment with a promise: * Ephesians 6:2 And where does the Bible say Mary is our mother? Please don’t tell me about John’s instruction to take care of her, that seems to be a wild understanding.

She did not raised me and she neither created me. She is not my mother.

You analogy fails. Wince He honored His own mother, we are to honor our own mothers according to what they have done as well.

When we honor our mothers we honor God. When we honor each other we honor God.
Then you should have no objection to honoring the Mother of God.
Paul’s speaking of those living on this side of death and glorification praying for each other.
Has someone prayed and interceded for you lately? If so, you would not have any objection asking our blessed Mother to pray and intercede for you.
I see NO reason Jesus needs help.
Jesus doesn’t need help. He listens to and answers all prayers of his beloved Mother.
And Jesus seemed to have rebuked her before answering her request.
Not at all. Jesus was perfectly obedient and respectful to his Mother at all times.
How you make the jump from us honoring other more than ourselves to Mary deserving the greatest honor is baffling to me???
Would you not agree that a king is deserving of greater honor than an ordinary man? Likewise, the Queen of Heaven and Mother of God is deserving of greater honor than ordinary men and women.
Please don’t tell me about John’s instruction to take care of her, that seems to be a wild understanding.
Do you not call Jesus your Brother? Then Mary is your Mother.

:signofcross::amen:

Not in those passages, but I believe it does somewhere in Matthew.😉
I don’t believe so. We know that the bread and wine are his body and blood because he said it is. Period. Not because of anything we as humans can do or invoke regarding the Sacrament, but because Jesus plainly said what it truly is several times in Scripture. I believe that Evangelicals are in error here to think that it is only symbolic.

Then you should have no objection to honoring the Mother of God.
Our problem is not the fact that you honor her, but that you honor her for things she doesn’t do.
Has someone prayed and interceded for you lately? If so, you would not have any objection asking our blessed Mother to pray and intercede for you.
The blessed mother of Jesus is not above the other children of God. She is in the same state all the children of God are when they die, that is: waiting for Jesus.
Jesus doesn’t need help. He listens to and answers all prayers of his beloved Mother.
Of course He does. This means that He listens to us, since He said that whoever listens to god and does his will is Jesus’ mother, brother and sister.
Not at all. Jesus was perfectly obedient and respectful to his Mother at all times.

Ordinary men and women are sinful. The children of God are not ‘ordinary’, they are special. And Mary is not the queen of Heaven. According to Jesus, the Church is His mother, brother and sister … and wife. The Church will reign with Him when He comes.
Do you not call Jesus your Brother? Then Mary is your Mother.

:signofcross::amen:
Not exactly. Jesus said that whoever does God’s will is his brother, sister and mother. So if your Jesus’ brother doesn’t mean that Mary is your mother, but it means that God is your father.

I didn’t see one that says that only the Roman Catholic church is God’s true Church and only she can correctly interpret Scripture either. But hey, that’s just me too.👍

I agree with you. Bread and wine look so much like flesh and meat. They are identical, aren’t they?

You think you have all the answers.🙂

The** Roman Catholic **Church and Orthodox Church didn’t exist then. It was simply Jesus’ Church.

You do not agree that Mary is the Mother of God? We honor her for that reason.
The blessed mother of Jesus is not above the other children of God. She is in the same state all the children of God are when they die, that is: waiting for Jesus.
Which other children of God can claim to be the Mother of God?
Of course He does. This means that He listens to us, since He said that whoever listens to god and does his will is Jesus’ mother, brother and sister.
I’m glad you agree.

Absolutely.

Is Jesus not the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, the King of Heaven? If so, Mary his Mother is the Queen of Heaven.
Not exactly. Jesus said that whoever does God’s will is his brother, sister and mother. So if your Jesus’ brother doesn’t mean that Mary is your mother, but it means that God is your father.
The mother of your brother is not your mother? I find your reasoning quite strange.

:blessyou:

I agree with you. Bread and wine look so much like flesh and meat. They are identical, aren’t they?
When Jesus says that the bread which come from Heaven is my flesh, it is obvious that this surpasses our understanding as humans. Exit reason, enter faith.

You do not agree that Mary is the Mother of God? We honor her for that reason.
We honor her as well for what she did. But you go so far as giving her honor for things she didn’t do or for qualities she doesn’t possess.
Which other children of God can claim to be the Mother of God?
As I have already stated, Jesus said that those who do God’s will are His brother, sister and mother.
Is Jesus not the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, the King of Heaven? If so, Mary his Mother is the Queen of Heaven.
Did Mary create Jesus? I hope you realize that the Father can be as well called the Mother since He isn’t a male or female. He made us in His image. Humanity is divided in two: male and female, and His image is divided in two, and when these two come together they are complete. The female is part of God’s image and the man is part of God’s image. When they come together they form the complete image of God. You logic in saying that since God is called the Father there must be a mother as well is a fail, since He isn’t a male, but He is something. He is called Father because the Father is the leader. But many times He has attributes of women. The woman completes the man. God doesn’t need something to complete Him. The Father (as He is usually called) isn’t a male. Only males need a female to be complete. The Father is something. He by Himself is already complete. Only man needs a woman to form the complete image of God. How is God going to need someone else to form a complete image of himself? God isn’t a man. He doesn’t need a female to form a complete image of Himself, since He Himself is already complete. Calling Him Father doesn’t mean that there is a Mother, because He is both our Father and Mother.
The mother of your brother is not your mother? I find your reasoning quite strange.

:blessyou:
Jesus also said that who does God’s will is Jesus’ mother. According tot his statement, my grandma is Jesus’ mother.
