Hostility from Jehovah's witnesses

I have browsed through some of their publications called “The Watchtower”, and there were misconceptions about Catholicism in them.

They also believe that Jesus was Michael the Archangel before he became Jesus.

They also misunderstand the number in Revelation that says 144,000 will go to heaven. They take that literally. (I believe it is a number squared by 12, which means “a lot of people”.)

They are trained to be very cordial when they knock on doors to talk about the Bible. Sadly, some of them bragged about formerly being Catholics. They were obviously poorly catechized and fell for the lies that were told them.
I also read an interesting article about the first English-translation of the Bible, how it was supposed to be spread to the masses so every plow-boy could read it. Laughable, considering this was pre-Guttenberg press, your average blow-boy couldn’t read, and books were still expensive.

Show them charity, love and be nice towards them. Knowing that they are a sect and do live in denial. Lord Jesus Christ founded one church, the Catholic Church. Not many churches.

I don’t know many Jehovah’s witnesses. I do work with three of them and they seem to have a lot of anger and hostility toward the Catholic Church. One of them asked me, “How can you believe in a religion that was started by a Roman Emperor?” Or that, “You are definitley going to hell.” Obviously I don’t know much about their faith. I also am not here to make fun of them. It’s hard to get a feel for there beliefs from 3 people. Have other people experienced this kind of theatment from them? God Bless
I have known many JW’s who are lovely people. I would never condemn them as people.

I would condemn their beliefs. Of course they think the Catholic Church was started by a Roman Emperor. What is the alternative? It might be true? They cannot say anything good about the Catholic Church or any other one. If they do, then their beliefs may be wrong.

I wouldn’t dream of making fun of a JW. I don’t agree with their beliefs, but I know many JW’s who are lovely people despite the fact they have views I cannot agree with. You don’t have to be a good person to speak truth. There are people who are not good who speak truth. A good person does not necessarily speak truth.

JW’s have nothing to offer you. This is what makes their beliefs false despite the fact many of them are sincere and lovely people.

I think this is the best way to tackle the veritable food fights of biblical ineptitude that accompany the JW, which may include throwing Sacred Scripture around in unconnected clumps in efforts to replacing the words The Lord with “Jehovah” (David never refers to the Lord with a personal name), or denying Salvation History with empty-hearted threats, or ignore the HaroldCampingesque blunders.

A quick, polite, “You have nothing to offer me” will turn these terrifying Avon Ladies back on their heels.

I heard a JW convert on the Journey Home once several years ago. He recalled asking a man at the door something like, “Wouldn’t you like to live forever in an earthly paradise?” The man answered, “No. I want to see God face to face as He really is.” Though he didn’t change his demeanor at the time, that small conversation set him on a search for truth, and landed him in the arms of Holy Mother Church.

What gets me is they open “their” Bible and start quoting from it as though I accept what it says, as opposed to other * Bibles.

I asked one on his repeat visit, “What is the best JW have to offer me [in the after-life]?” He replied that I could live happily on earth forever. I never got an answer to my follow-up statement that that couldn’t be because the earth would not last forever, that it would eventually be swallowed up by the sun, and the sun would die out.*

I think the JW was talking about the second coming of Christ, when our body will be reunited with our soul and the wicked thrown into the second death and the good staying on earth. You know “the new heaven and the new earth”.

Where did you come up with the earth being swallowed up by the sun?

I’ve never had any issues with the Jehovahs Witnesses to be honest. They have one of their Missionary Schools nearby and they just come and go about their business with little or no fanfare.

Where did you come up with the earth being swallowed up by the sun?
The Sun is about halfway through its main-sequence evolution, during which nuclear fusion reactions in its core fuse hydrogen into helium. Each second, more than four million metric tons of matter are converted into energy within the Sun’s core, producing neutrinos and solar radiation. At this rate, the Sun has so far converted around 100 Earth-masses of matter into energy. The Sun will spend a total of approximately 10 billion years as a main sequence star.
The Sun does not have enough mass to explode as a supernova. Instead, in about 5 billion years, it will enter a red giant phase, its outer layers expanding as the hydrogen fuel in the core is consumed and the core contracts and heats up. Helium fusion will begin when the core temperature reaches around 100 million [degrees] K and will produce carbon, entering the asymptotic giant branch phase.
Earth’s fate is precarious. As a red giant, the Sun will have a maximum radius beyond the Earth’s current orbit, 1 AU (1.5×1011 m), 250 times the present radius of the Sun.
However, by the time it is an asymptotic giant branch star, the Sun will have lost roughly 30% of its present mass due to a stellar wind, so the orbits of the planets will move outward. If it were only for this, Earth would probably be spared, but new research suggests that Earth will be swallowed by the Sun owing to tidal interactions. Even if Earth would escape incineration in the Sun, still all its water will be boiled away and most of its atmosphere would escape into space. Even during its current life in the main sequence, the Sun is gradually becoming more luminous (about 10% every 1 billion years), and its surface temperature is slowly rising. The Sun used to be fainter in the past, which is possibly the reason life on Earth has existed for only about 1 billion years on land. The increase in solar temperatures is such that in about another billion years the surface of the Earth will likely become too hot for liquid water to exist, ending all terrestrial life.
So, where would that leave all the sedonamen who were promised eternal happiness on earth by the JWs?

Thanks for the education.

I worked with a JW. He was a very nice person. Once and awhile we would talk about faith, not debates, just talk. He told me that they believe that one Judgement Day, the JW that are not worthy of Heaven will go back to the grave for eternal death/sleep. My parents taught me to never argue about religion, politics or money…so there was never an argument with him. Just discussions. When the number 144,000 he was pretty much stumped and not sure how to answer when I ask, “Won’t all those “seats” already be filed?” I didn’t say it to be funny, I just wanted to know what he thought…
God Bless…Susan

Just a slight correction, Phyllo. It seems that in your post, you changed the ending on the statement in sedonaman’s post quote from JWs to “JEWs”. I’m wondering why you would do that, since this thread is about Jehovah’s Witnesses which he had shortened to “JWs” (the initials for Jehovah’s Witnesses). Where did you get the idea that it should have been, or that he meant “JEWs”? 🤷

How could Constantine start the RCC when his mother St. Helena was involved with getting him into it for years? (She went to the Holy Land to find the true cross which she did apparently).

NICE JOB you guys; some of your comments make me LOL, LOL, LOL!

Lately, I have needed the levity to keep on an even keel & stay balanced with life’s demands. Also, knowing & researching this stuff - worse yet those of you who lived it - could drive you bonkers. Thank you for your love and defense of Holy Mother Church!!! 👍 Few Catholics I know are like you guys & know what you know and are willing to stand up & voice opinions. Once again, NICE JOB! Keep it up!

Thx. I didn’t notice.

They probably mean Constantine, but you should tell them that Catholic practices originated way before Constantine came along.

  1. *]There had been many councils (though not as large) prior to Nicaea (the councils Constantine set up)
*]The structure of the Church already existed.
*]Constantine was only an observer at the Bishops and just representative of the Pope made all of the decisions.
*]Before the council of Nicaea, priestly celibacy was already the norm,
*]baptism of infants was practiced (as were all 7 sacraments)
*]The structure of priests and Bishops was already 300 years old.
Or that, “You are definitley going to hell.”
Sure a Jehovah’s Witness said that? They usually don’t believe in hell. But if they did you should write that up. :sad_yes:

I am sorry.

I have no idea. I didn’t change it. Could something have happened when I used quote?

I have no idea. I just thought it was odd. If you have some kind of ‘autocorrect’ built into your computer, maybe it made the change? I just thought I’d mention it, because it seemed that you had made the correction. Maybe we could just blame Bill Gates. 🤷 😃

You know–I do have auto correct on the PC and that is probably what happened. I am glad you thought of that because otherwise I would have thought that I was losing it.

Thanks a bunch–I did not use auto correct now so if there are misspelt words Oh Well LOL

I personally have never experienced any Hostility from any JW & Just A few weeks ago Some JW’s knocked on my Door & I Mistakenly Opened the Door thinking it was the UPS Or FEDEX Man dropping off A Package , Once I Notice it was them I wasn’t Rude But I didn’t let them in I allowed them to Read A Verse from the Bible & I toke A Publication of their TowerWatch & Awaken Magazine I however ended up thrown it out because i had to much junk .

However I treat them the way they treat me & most I’ve ever Experienced from JW’s are Loving & kind So I would Assume Some Younger Generation of JW’s are mislead Or Just want to Cause A uproar with Other Mainly Catholics but I’ve Never Experience this type of Behavior from Any JW i’ve met .

I will be Honest I do think Th JW Religion is Like A Cult I Love Celebrating Birthdays & Holiday’s & stuff I’m not sure Who wouldn’t want to & that’s One of the reason’s why I wouldn’t Join JW Because I love celebrations & Birthday’s & stuff .
