" Liquidum non frangit jejunum." [Liquids (including chocolate) do not break the fast.] It is likely that this decision was based on the fact that chocolate, like so many other herbs, was considered to have medicinal qualities
The traditional interpretation was that not even alcoholic beverages break the fast. The rationale is that fast restricts only solid meal.
The traditional Eucharistic fast was different, it restricted also water and any kind of liquid with exception for medicines.
