We, the House of Bishops of the Anglican Church in America of the Traditional Anglican Communion have met in Orlando, Florida, together with our Primate and the Reverend Christopher Phillips of the “Anglican Use” Parish of Our Lady of the Atonement (San Antonio, Texas) and others.

At this meeting, the decision was made formally to request the implementation of the provisions of the Apostolic Constitution Anglicanorum coetibus in the United States of America by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

Over on the Anglo-Catholic blog, there is news of the Traditional Anglican Communion formally requesting the establishment of a personal ordinariate in the United States. The Anglicans belonging to the American branch of the TAC have decided to take up the offer made in the Pope’s November decree Anglicanorum coetibus.

somebody just asked me last night about CS Lewis, I wonder how he would have viewed developments in his own Anglican Church in England over the years since his death, and this detente.

Here, too. They have 99 churches. There’s one down the street a bit that I took Tae Kwon Do classes in. I pass it everyday going to/from work, too (in this 5 mile stretch of major road, there must be 3 dozen churches! Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran, Baptist, Methodist, non-denominational, and so on, including 3 at/near one intersection!).

I think the answer is quite clear from his address “Fern-seed and Elephants”, which he gave to the students of Westcott House, a theological college at Cambridge, England, on 11 May 1959, and reprinted in the collection “Fern-seed and Elephants”, © Fontana Books (1975). The college students were headed for the Anglican ministry. Here is what he says:

A theology which denies the historicity of nearly everything in the Gospels to which Christian life and affections and thought have been fastened for two millennia – which either denies the miraculous altogether or, more strangely, after swallowing the camel of the Resurrection strains at such gnats as the feeding of the multitudes – if offered to the uneducated man can produce only one or other of two effects. It will make him a Roman Catholic or an atheist. What you offer him he will not recognise as Christianity. If he holds to what he calls Christianity he will leave a church in which it is no longer taught and look for one where it is. If he agrees with your version he will no longer call himself a Christian and no longer come to church. In his crude, coarse way, he would respect you much more if you did the same.

And his concluding comment was

Such are the reactions of one bleating layman to Modern Theology. It is right you should hear them. You will not perhaps hear them very often again. Your parishoners will not often speak to you quite frankly.

Missionary to the priests of one’s own church is an embarrassing role; though I have a horrid feeling that if such mission work is not soon undertaken the future history of the Church of England is likely to be short.

I am so happy over this news! :extrahappy: As a former Episcopalian I rejoice that so many Anglicans are entering the Church. What makes me personally excited is the prospect of an Anglican Use Rite parish being established near me. I pray God we’ll have at least one–I love the liturgy and the hymns and the solemnity–all in English, beautiful English. If there’s one close enough I’ll be there in a shot!
