I am guessing that you are a grown adult, so why are you worried about this?
If someone is “scandalized” by your boyfriend/girlfriend staying at your home, while you are gone, to watch your house & pets- IT IS THEIR PROBLEM, NOT YOURS!!

I’ll say it again- this is ridiculous.
OP if you are really worried, get off the internet and call your priest!!
Agreed.

Having a boyfriend stay at your house while you are not there could cause problems. Say if someone comes to visit you and your boyfriend answers the door–naturally they may believe he is living there with you. This is what some people are like–as soon as they decide that this is the case–or even think it may be the case–they will spread the news far and wide, and perhaps the second or third generation of people spreading this rumor will say this to friends or relatives you would rather not think this of you.
Of course, perhaps you don’t care if anyone thinks this of you.
This situation could develop. You find another man you would consider marrying, but then he hears you have loose morals, and decides to move on. Perhaps this would cause problems with other people as well, problems you don’t foresee now.

Ditto.

So… I see a lot of threads where people ask if it’s ok if their boyfriend/girlfriend stays the night in a separate room. The answer is generally no.

What about if I’m asking my boyfriend/girlfriend to housesit for me and watch my dogs? This person will stay in my guestroom overnight. And obviously I will be out of town. Is there any element of scandal in this situation? Such as where people don’t realize that I’m out of town?

The misperception of people around here generally seems to be pretty high. My parents visit me relatively often, and a lot of them thought they lived here (one person even thought I was the one who was visiting).

Quick responses would be ideal, as I need to figure something out today.
You’re being SCRUPULOUS.

Glad to hear it. Just so you know, I’ve decided to have a family member (of the opposite sex!) housesit instead. I’m still not sure about the friend housesitting – but this turned out to be the better option anyway.
I’m just happy for your dogs.

It will be a big enough wrench for them with you gone, but at least they will have the smells and comfort of home while you’re gone, and not have to go through the upset of missing you **and **being in a strange environment.

Sarah x 🙂

There are two kinds of people with regards to scandal; those who scandalize and those who choose to be scandalized.
Indeed. What if your sister, who was visiting from out of town, was staying at your house and you had to go away? What if no one knew she was your sister?

You said this opposite-sex friend isn’t even in a relationship with you!

It’s other people’s problem from fantasising about things of which they know nothing. It doesn’t seem very charitable to assume people are cohabitating. To me, the charitable thing to do, when seeing someone of the opposite sex coming out of a single person’s house alone, would be to assume they were related, cleaners, sitters, etc.

As for the Jimmy Akin article, the only time an issue arises is when you fail to correct something. This means that if someone asked you who the opposite-sex person was, you tell them they were dog sitting while you were away! (Notice that the article doesn’t mention doing anything pre-emptively.)
