What inspires me to clean -is having company - then I really have to get moving and clean up (oh well bedrooms still do not get done as I tend to just close the doors).
This reminds me of a funny story! I know a couple of sisters who would inspire each other by threatening to come over. One would call the other in the a.m. and announce a visit…she might show up…might not you never knew…but inspiration occured non-the-less

Lol, I wish my sisters didn’t have to cross the Atlantic to visit! It’s not as credible that way 😛

Laundry is my greatest downfall. My husband does way better. He takes hangars into the laundry room and hangs clothes up immediately as he pulls them out of the dryer…then takes them straight to the closets…smart man

I on the other hand take them out and dump them on the couch where they wrinkle and sit for a while 🙂

Then they sit folded for a while…then I get huge piles that need to be put away…

Just starting this thread made me remember what I should be doing…I’m going to put a bunch of hangars in the laundry room and retrain myself…who said men don’t know anything about housework?
Lilith, it sounds like we have the same disease. I am also a recovering messy person. I checked-out a book at the libray a few years ago called The Messy’s Guide to Cleaning House. It was helpful, but I need to reread it.

One tip that I have found very helpful is to invite people over. This forces you to clean. I try to invite people for dinner every two weeks. This, however, doesn’t inspire me to clean my closets. I need a big inspiration for that.

IWhat do you listen to while you clean? I do better listening to music. I was listening to E.W.T.N…and I noticed that I stop cleaning to hear what is being said.
A couple years ago I bought myself a headset for the phone (they’re cheap–$10 @ Target). Now while I’m making beds, picking up kid clutter from around the house, making dinner, emptying the dw, folding laundry…I return missed calls, make my PTA calls, catch up w/ long distance friends, check in on my dear MIL, etc. It’s a great way to multi-task and sure takes the drudgery out of household tasks. (I just started this since my kids went to school–it’s unfair to tune out the little ones for a long time if you still have them at home–though does allow for multi-tasking during naps:)

OK, do you really shine your sink every day and wear shoes all day in your house? I signed up for flylady last week but haven’t “started” yet. I hate wearing shoes! :o
I quit FlyLady after a few days but I’m willing to give it another try. Lucky we live Hawaii, we don’t wear shoes in the home. :yup:

My solution is to invite company. Yes, it’s amazing what your guests will do.

Those dusty chair seats? Why after folks have sat on them, they don’t need it.

The bathroom? Usually, a person who uses it doesn’t want the next person to think they left it in such a condition. So, she, usually a she, will tidy up a bit.

The kitchen? Folks will want to help clean-up. While they’re at it, some “extra” cleaning gets done, as well.

The laundry? Well, during the evening, there tends to be a spill or two. frequently, the person will offer to put the item “in the wash.” I just ask that they add a “few things.”

By the time the evening is over; we’ve had some fun, the house is cleaner than when my guests came, and, well, there’s time to relax…😃

Are you laughing at my house-cleaing tips? You think I jest? After years of accumulating these “gems”, they go unappreciated…

On a more serious note, I have found that this works particularly well if you invite both spouses’ parents. They’ll try to outdo each other!

Well that would not work in my case, I do not clean for my sister or Dad. They are family and can see the mess.
Aunts and Inlaws yes then I clean.
Though of late I find, I clean before and after we have company, so have a new rule to do a top-top cleaning before and a thorough cleaning after (lazy me 😉 )
Though DS has also commented that we rarely entertain or have people over, so go figure.

Love a shiney sink. But can’t wear shoes unless I must. My piggies just like being out to play.:rotfl:

Who wants to wear shoes all day!? Yuck! Plus you’re just tracking dirt on your carpets. Do slippers (of the bunny variety) have the same effect?😃
The slippers will have to do in my house – I was brought up not to wear shoes indoors. 😃

I may check out that website to see if Flylady has any advice regarding huge, monster-size jobs, like cleaning my basement – the kind of job that could really use about 4 or 5 people, but I’ll be stuck doing it myself.

We could start a challenge, to complete a particular job and report back here as to how we are doing.
We did this on aother forum I used to visit 4 years ago and I did get the house cleaned/ organized.
Anyone up for a weekly challenge?
One week it could be cleaning out linen closet, next the basement or laundry room, then the closet or coat closet…
Anyone?

Count me in! Only problem is, the two specific jobs I have in mind, are in no way one-week jobs – especially considering I only have weekends to deal with them. OK to break up the jobs into a couple of hundred tiny steps? 😃

(I have outdoor jobs, as well, but those are completely dependent on the weather).

I.
I take a box room to room and fill it with the stuff that doesn’t belong there. When I’m done, I put everything away at once, then go on to the next room. That’s the only thing that works for me.
Fortunately, my husband isn’t too picky about extreme clean.

Hey, thats a great idea but I’m afraid that I’ll end up with a bunch of boxes in every room.

One rule of thumb (mind you I never follow) - If you have not used it a year (or two) you probably never will. So it is safe to throw away or give away:)
If that were the case I would have no clutter;)
Any suggestions on what we want to tackle first - I would opt for coat closet since with Winter around the corner need to check out the boots and jackets and mitts and…and throw out all the ratty summer stuff.

Okay, I am going to take this post as a sign from God.

I have been putting off my housecleaning and decided to read the forums instead. Housework…blah! is exactly what I have been thinking about today.

Some days it is just really tough, today is one of those days. So, goodbye for now-I have cleaning to do. 😉
If you’re still reading!!!

I’m with you. I’d much rather be on the computer than doing housework. I can watch television or listen to the stereo while doing housework but I haven’t figured out how to surf the net at the same time.

That one will be easy for me! My “coat closet” consists of a garment rack in the entrance hallway, and a nearby basket of hats, scarves, and gloves.

When you live in a very old house, one thing you don’t get is a lot of closets. 😃

***If I keep reading this thread and stay on CA forums, I’ll never get my housework done today. ***

You know, that’s not a bad idea…

Seeing that you live in the cold, frozen North - what about the boots and other Winter gear? 🙂
