This was eminently predictable.

HOUSTON, Texas — Houston Police Department Chief Art Acevedo said burglaries in the city are up 20 percent since the issuance of “Stay-Home, Work-Safe” orders put in place by Harris County.

“Right now, burglaries have spiked 20 percent,” Chief Acevedo told Breitbart Texas in a phone interview. “Some people are seeing the shutdown of businesses as a target-rich opportunity. Habitual burglars should not be released.”

The chief said that there needs to be a plan for what to do with habitual criminals that are being released from the Harris County jail under orders from County Judge Lina Hidalgo. “What happens to these folks after they are released,” the chief asked. “What is the plan?”

Acevedo said Judge Hidalgo did not consult with him about the issue of releasing criminals from the county jail, a large percentage of which were arrested by his officers.

Police in other cities are also reporting increases in burglaries after stay-at-home orders are issued by local authorities. . . .

Troubling. I would not be surprised if we saw similar increases in crime in other cities and areas locked down.

Great point Roselle! You are correct.

Thanks Cathoholic. I guess it doesn’t take much a stretch to imagine more crime against businesses and elsewhere with people not working, some cities releasing large numbers of prisoners from prisons, some police departments curtailing their patrols for fear of the virus, and many people out and about wearing masks.

From Tuesday: "Chicago continued to see significant decreases in major crimes during the first full week of Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s statewide stay-at-home order amid the coronavirus pandemic.

From March 23 through Sunday, the city saw a 23% single-week dip in its seven major crime categories, including homicides, burglaries and major thefts, compared with the same stretch in 2019, official city data shows…

Other major U.S. cities affected by the coronavirus outbreak continued to see big dips in major crime last week.

In New York, where hundreds have died from COVID-19, major crimes dropped by more than 36% over the same week in 2019, according to official NYPD statistics. This includes double-digit percentage drops in reported rape, robbery and grand larceny.

When compared with the previous week, March 16 through March 22, major crime in New York was down by 22%, the NYPD statistics show.

In Philadelphia, total violent crimes and property crimes were down by 11% and 18%, respectively, from March 2 to Sunday, compared with the previous 28-day period, according to that city’s crime statistics.

Last week’s crime statistics for Los Angeles, another city hit hard by COVID-19, weren’t immediately available. But from Feb. 23 to March 21, the city saw an 18% drop in total property crimes, which include major thefts and burglaries, compared with the previous 28-day period, according to official LAPD statistics."

I wonder if the gun-friendly laws in Texas have some role in the reason why Houston saw an increase in crime where other major cities did not. I don’t think Houston’s “base case” crime numbers are significantly different from the other major cities.

I am surprised at these statistics.
I read the numbers are down and that is the logical conclusion since everyone is home.

What about home burglaries? Those should be down, I suppose, unless Houston burglars are really stupid.
