How an incorrect translation of the synod report created chaos

How many mistranslations can there be? This isn’t rocket science, can they not translate common languages like italian better than a 5 second google translate copy and paste? Maybe they really do mean whats reported, maybe some people are just using mistranslation as a coping mechanism when they hear things they don’t like.
The article just mentioned one word that was mistranslated.

From what I am hearing, Saturday’s version should be completely different.

Not to challenge you but this is what they have to deal with.

LGBT activist group hopes to influence family synod
Yup. The church we left after nearly 30 years which has turned very “seeker friendly” and doesn’t hardly ever hear the word “sin” mentioned, had a young woman as a guest speaker last weekend. I listened to the message on-line. She was/is part of the LGBT community. Her story was compelling and the message quite good and scripturally based-- as far as it went.

It was long on loving and accepting others but short on how the truth of God’s word was applied. Thus it was imbalanced. I wanted to know how the word of truth was applied to her situation and exactly what her present situation was. She was wearing a black ring on her left hand ring finger. I’m going to research a little more on what that means. I, and others, want to know what the agenda is, for everyone has an agenda.

I was disappointed the former senior pastor (retired) and the new senior pastor (37ish and pushing a young person’s agenda) did not tell the congregation more of her story before she was given the platform for three services. Too many unanswered questions.

I fear there is going to be way too much grace and not nearly enough truth. I hope that isn’t the case with the Synod. We will see.

God bless.

Mistranslations have happened. The difference is that there was generally one source and the issue could be settled quickly.
This time, there was more than one source and different versions. I read newspapers in different languages trying to find what was wrong in the sentences in question. None of them were alike. Not even in the same language.
By the time I could identify the most reliable and reasonable one, things had kind of gone out of control in a few hours. Everything happened too soon, that is what I mean.

So the answer is ,it happens. And one word can change the meaning of a sentence completely. Even a comma does,if you think of it ( and I am obviously no expert …).
Maybe, we can take this possibility into account when something sounds confusing next time 🙂

Not all divorce and remarriages are the same. People need to realize this as so many who have divorced and remarried have done so without doing it selfishly. My divorce and remarriage was not done selfishly. I was raped by my boyfriend back in 1988 and when I told him I was pregnant he left me. I was devastated. He did pay for child support but my son never got to know him. Anyway, I met a man in 1994 who I thought would be good for my son and would one day enjoy being his step-dad. Everything seemed ok as we were married in 1994 in the Catholic Church. Shortly after the honeymoon he started asking questions like, “why did you keep that kid of yours” and “I cant love your son as much as if we have another child as I will likely love mine more”. This hurt me badly but I held on. He started moving things out of the house for no reason except to use the excuse that we had a chimney fire and he didn’t want anything to accidentally burn so I went with that. Little did I know that he was slowly leaving me. One night when he came back home from work I told him that my dad would like us to get wood with him but my husband said “no, I am going to my friends house”. I said, “no, you are coming with me to help dad”. At that he said, “that’s it. I AM LEAVING”. I thought he meant he was going back to his friends house or something so I asked him, “what do you mean”? He said, “EXACTLY THAT…I WANT A DIVORCE”!!! I begged and pleaded with him and I even suggested we go through counseling but he refused. Then he said the final blow…“AND TELL THAT SON OF YOURS THAT I AM GOING ON A PERMANANT VACATION”!!! My heart just sank! There was nothing I could do except still tell him that I love him but he just kept grabbing things as fast as he could. I did tell him that I will not give him a divorce but he told me, “IF YOU DONT GIVE ME A DIVORCE THEN I WILL MAKE YOUR LIFE A LIVING HELL”!!! At that point I felt I had no choice. We were divorced that same year. And I might also mention that shortly after the divorce, he got himself a new wife. Right after the divorce I made a promise to myself that I would never trust or fall in love with another man as long as I live and I kept that promise until God answered me in 2010 with a man who I am happy to say I have been married to for just about 2 years now. We were married in 2012. My son is 25 years old and they get along great together and I THANK GOD with all my heart for what has transpired. I will say that it took quite some time for me to trust this man before I married him but he is God’s gift to me. I never did go through the annulment process as I couldn’t and still cant afford it. I did not get remarried in the Catholic Church as it just did not seem right to me so we got married in the County Hall in Swansea, Wales. So as you can see, my divorce did not happen because of selfish reasons unlike so many who are married and divorce just because they fall in love with someone else. That to me is just stupid. So as far as I am concerned I believe that those who are in a similar circumstance as me should be allowed to receive Holy Communion as we did nothing wrong. We tried and failed at holding on to a marriage. God gave me a second husband as a gift and I am not letting this gift slip through my fingers.

Gilliam, this simply isn’t true. There is chaos in Italy too!

The context is this:

Fact 1:
Cardinal Kasper was reported, before the synod, by a respectable Italian journalist, to have admitted that there were plans to make the documents intentionally ambiguous.

Fact 2
The interim report is normally formulated by “elected representatives”. This was planned for this synod. The representatives were elected. They consisted mostly of conservatives. Pope Francis personally intervened and removed this responsibility from them. He then handpicked six priests for the job instead: all renown liberals.

Fact 3
This document has been called “undignified”, “shameful” and “completely wrong” by Cardinal Muller, who
(a) wasn’t talking about the English translation,
(b) more than any other bishop (after the pope) has the job of upholding true teachings and condemning false ones
(c) unlike the pope, with all respect to him, is a well respected theologian

So many Catholics are in denial and it doesn’t help. We know from history the Church can go through trying times. The Second Vatican Council called on the laity to participate actively. Let’s do that. We have the right and, more importantly, the responsibility to make our concerns known.

Dear Anthonymarie,

Thank you for this post. God bless you.🙂 Please pray for Cardinal Burke, that our Lord helps him, guides him, protects him during this Synod. He is a moderator, so he needs all the help from above that he can get.

Kyrie Eleison!

Christe Eleison!

There has been some changes made to the English translation but the word ‘valuing’ is still included.

It seems to me, after everyone settles down, is the real news story about the extraordinary synod was the public disagreements regarding the errors in the interim report by Cardinals and Bishops. I don’t remember watching Cardinals and Bishops directly contradict each other in public. Don’t get me wrong i’m glad they did even if it presented a mess to the world. It seems to me error and evil has been allowed to live in the Church because everyone kept it hidden, but now that (at least this little point) the correction was made public I hope and pray that it will be much harder for error to happen ( ie Vatican II) or at least give those defending the truth an opportunity to fight for the Truth. Does anyone else remember a time that this kind of public corrections happened at this level?

I’m still skeptical of this explanation. Unlike some of us, I seriously doubt Catholic Bishops followed the synodical conference by reading about it on the BBC, New York Times, Huffington Post, etc, and I’ll wager that at least a few of the Bishops who spoke out are fluent in Italian.

This is worse than the United Nations. If only we had one vocabulary which we could all understand…

Italian’s “valutando” in fact means “evaluating,” and in this context would be better translated with “weighing” or “considering.”

The Italian word “valutando” also means “valuing” as well as “considering” etc.
So it’s not exactly an *incorrect *translation.

Whoever translated the text at the Holy See press office consciously chose the word “valuing”, knowing they were going to give the document to journalists and post it on their site.
IMO it sounds like the press office is backtracking now for damage-control purposes–which is fine and expected.
But with a document so important, that everyone is waiting for with bated breathe…and it’s going directly to the media all over the world…it would be highly unlikely that someone would allow such an error slip through.
If they did, if it really was a mistake…I’d imagine the person who did the translating would be fired for this because it would be considered the utmost in sloppy, reckless work.

At least no one can blame the MEDIA, as many were jumping on the bandwagon to do, as usual.
The Vatican press office sent it out this way, it was posted on their website this way.

.
  • “Are our communities capable of providing that, accepting and valuing their sexual orientation, without compromising Catholic doctrine on the family and matrimony?”*
When you read this sentence, it seems that really only the translation ‘valuing’ fits with the gist of the question. ‘Evaluating’ simply doesn’t belong in that space.

Personally I think that looking at the anomaly of homosexual orientation for an alternate value than physical sexual fulfillment, is a really productive path to follow.

Anthropologists have noted that it was quite common for tribal shamans and medicine men in ancient history and in diverse places, not to be married or drawn to the married vocation. They speculate that their desire for intimacy was more spiritual than physical making them more suitable intermediaries between the gods and the people.

Of course there is a strong claim by the homosexual agenda that this demonstrates support for homosexuality. However, it causes me to wonder whether the homosexual orientation is a disordered expression of a higher spiritual calling whose role is very vital to humankind.

Catholic Priests called to celibacy through affective maturity, seem to serve a not dissimilar role.

Perhaps the idea of looking for value in the homosexual orientation is not so offensive or pointless if we are truly trying to find Gods plan through the mire of sin?

I am one of those who suspect that the “mistranslation” argument is a little shaky. At best, it was perhaps an error made in haste reflecting the translator’s sympathies - aimed at public consumption. I believe there was a clashing of opinions on many controversial issues at the Synod, including how the Church should define and respond to homosexuality. The differences between the various groups and bishops are clear. To me, it is incredibly naïve to try and dismiss this situation by concluding that there was simply a mistranslation. It’s anybody’s guess how this will all play out at the next Synod leading up to the drafting of the Pope’s final document.

Next Thursday, November 6, Walter Cardinal Kasper will receive a prestigious award from the Catholic University of America’s theology school, delivering a lecture there on the “theological background of the ecclesiological and ecumenical vision of Pope Francis.”

Which is why we need to control the message.

I don’t buy this “lets wait until…” wait until what? Damage has already begun, now we have to clean up. NCRegister realizes this.
I am with you, I don’t buy the 'Let’s wait until" slogan either. And National Catholic Register is always good to read.
