What Ed does not understand is that Jesus could have saved us in any manner He chooses because He is God. But God always acts in the same manner and does not have to change. God chose to symbolize what was to be a sign of greater things to come by giving the Hebrews the atoning sign of blood being sprinkled on them by Moses at Sinai. The High Priest always on the Day of Atonement sprinkled the Holy of Holies with blood of the hysop tree. This showed how the people were saved by the blood of the Lamb going out of Egypt. This is our faith. Our faith also has a perpetual sacrifice in the Mass where the Body and Blood is shown separated to show that death of our Savior was true. If there was no shedding of blood there was no death according to the Hebrews. That is why blood is shown as saving. It is from what was understood by the people at that time. Blood to them was something that gives life. Christ’s shedding of His Blood then gives life to us. We do not use the metaphor of Blood like the Hebrews did. We know He died for us and continually is saving us by His Graces merited on the Cross. So saying that there had to be blood just means that Christ died for us according to the Father’s will. The understanding of the Hebrews and us is kept in tact.
