The thief on the cross received Jesus’ paint (BLOOD), as you call it, simply by believing (no water APPLICATION)

My observation is that Protestant churches are largely occupied by ex-Catholics who never really knew their faith - they were Catholic in name only. They only become “experts” on the Catholic faith (in their own mind) after they leave the Church. Ed is a classic example: he offers Catholic grade school and serving as an altar boy as some sort of credentials. He actually believes that this counts for something! You know if a majority of Catholic’s believe like most on this forum, you might have some credibility. But, I really don’t believe that a majority of Catholic’s believe in most of it’s doctrines. My Church is made up of many ex-catholics that have been saved by grace through faith. When they hear the true and full Gospel preached, they respond to the prompting of the Holy Spirit.

SteveGC On post 778 you asked me to show you where does it say that baptism is a sign of repentance. When I did Mat 3:8, you state Catholics believe this. Why then ask me? My statement above should have read “I can NOT combine baptism with atonement but with repentance”. Sorry to have confused you. You have a keen eye, I did bad editing. Jesus’ blood atonement is applied to me when I believed. It’s sufficient by its self. It doesn’t need water’s help. Jesus’ blood sacrifice carries over from the Old T.animals blood sacrifices without water’s help. Water baptism which is the application of Jesus’ blood is the Catholic’s defense of infant baptism and their misunderstanding of Jn 3;5 born again by water. Above you say: Grace opens a doorway??? What doorway? Life time cooperate??? What? Novenas, rosaries, indulgencies.etc.etc.? Free will co-exists with Grace??? I don’t understand what your talking about. But I do understand this: If we unwillinging sin, confess it to God, His blood covers it. If we willingly continue in sin, there’s no more Jesus’ sacrifice. That I do understand. Really, do you think a little child understands all that you mentioned above? Jesus says Lk 18:17, “I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it”. Above you say, "John says it’s ’ for repentance’, but he doesn’t say what baptism DOES??? Didn’t John just say what it DOES? It’s for REPENTANCE. Peter says baptism saves? Where? If you mean Acts 2:40 ? in v41 people got saved by the message he preached the cross and resurection. And what makes you think Catholics don’t believe this?
You’re now confusing me. Before you said baptism is not linked to the atonement, but to repentance. Are you saying that baptism can be linked to the atonement IF there is repentance? If so, I would say, I agree.
But your comment, “if it’s by works it’s no longer grace” still has me confused. Do you think that Catholics feel we are saved by the power of our works? If so, you learned this wrong. Salvation comes by the power of Grace, made possible by the blood sacrifice of Christ. This grace opens a doorway that did not exist before, and is offered to us - and if we accept, it empowers us to walk through it. But we each still have to use our free will in cooperation with this gift to walk through it. Through the light of faith, we see the good works laid out before us by God, we cooperate with them throughout our lives, and remain in Him until our death. If we remain so at our last breath, then we share in His eternal kingdom. Baptism is initial acceptance of this gift of Grace. We are empowered by receiving it. We must still cooperate. We must have faith, obedience, and repentance. The Grace given us at baptism helps us acquire and sustain these things, but it is a two-way street. Our free will co-exists alongside the grace of God throughout our lives.
Actually, John doesn’t make it as clear as Peter does. John says it’s “for repentance”, but he doesn’t say what baptism DOES. Peter explains that baptism “saves”. But according to you, does baptism even DO anything?
Yes, acceptance of Christ and repentance for sins are critical in the salvation equation. Actually, we don’t know who’s on their way to Hell. Only God knows this.
Ok, so come clean. Is baptism necessary or is it not? Earlier you said it was. Now you’re saying it isn’t.
Infants are baptized because it empowers them with the Grace of God, and brings them into the family of God. When they are able to reason for themselves, they are obliged to cooperate with this Grace…repent for sins, be obedient to the Word, etc.
How are you using the term “subject”? As in “slave”? We are slaves to sin until we cooperate with the Grace of God. At that point, we become slaves to righteousness, which is actually a state of genuine freedom. In this sense, we are indeed subject to Christ, and because He instituted a Church, we are “subject” to Her as well. Of course, if you fail to see The Church as Christ’s own, you will of course feel as though baptized Catholics are enslaved to a man. Pity you learned it this way.
I’ll do that later and get back to you.
Canto, I’m not being sarcastic, but I often wondered if your going to pray to a saint, why don’t you (Catholics) pray to Moses or Elijah because you know for certain that they are in heaven? per the trafiguration EDWe pray for the dead and not to them

To keep with the subject that I posted this under is your willingness to ask for evidence of scripture to prove itself. So when the bible lacks evidence to support your interpretation you are faced with a choice, believe what you are taught threw the RCC or stick with the original witness of the authors of the NT letters. At this point you choose to follow the one path I follow the other.
Well I did not mean to stir such a negative reaction from you. My personality is that when a subject with compound elements starts down a road, it has a tendency to be drawn way from the real issue. On occasion I find it necessary and beneficial to my point to summarize all that has been exchanged to the smallest common denominator.tuk, you act like your fork is not a private interpretation. That’s absurd. Look, bottom line…we choose the infallible interpretation, you choose the fallible one. They’re BOTH interpretations, make NO mistake about it. To sit there and think that saying “I just stick to the NT letters” means that you don’t privately interpret is highly ignorant of what it means to read Sacred Scripture. It’s incredibly arrogant in it’s essence, and the only reason I refrain from calling you arrogant, is because your ignorance trumps it. I’m not calling you stupid. You seem like a highly intelligent person actually. But you are plagued by ignorance of the universal faith.
tuk, did you pick up your Bible one day and figure out everything you offer us here on your own? No, you did not. No one does that. Knowledge of the Christian faith comes from HUMAN teaching, which is interpretive in nature. You follow a mosaic of human teachers you’ve encountered throughout your life, and have come to have faith in certain combinations of them that either suited your mentality, or made the most sense to you at the time. Problem is, you haven’t yet realized that none of these men came to you with any authority to teach you full truths about Christ, about salvation, about Christian morals.
Now you can say you just follow the NT letters if you want, but know that we are not fooled by that one bit. The translation of that is “I follow what I’ve been taught by others”. And we do too. The remaining question then is, which of the “others” is authentic, has authority, has the protection of the Spirit of God? Yours…or ours?

There is also Hebrews 11 which names even more who gained approval by their faith. The saints (not that I’ve read every thing about every one) seem to be very faithful, holy and charitable people with an abounding love of our Saviour. Surely these people are not in hell?
You should realize that the protestant “faith” itself was initially established primarily by an “ex-Catholic” who in part disagreed with Church and Biblical teachings. Why would it be a surprise that several “ex-Catholics” joined? Additionally, I know from vast experience the Catholics who do leave have no real education in their Catholic Faith and in fact are ignorant to it, which is predominantly why they leave. But the fact is they leave to practice a faith only part of but less “demanding” than what is required through the full teachings of Jesus Christ in the Church of His Bride. There is no such thing as an ex-Catholic because they have been offered if not accepted the fullness of Christianity, which is not the same as those never introduced to the CC. More is expected of those who have been given more… By far a majority do, but it is a very large Church. You know if a majority of Catholic’s believe like most on this forum, you might have some credibility. But, I really don’t believe that a majority of Catholic’s believe in most of it’s doctrines. Baptism replaces circumcision
Old Cov - infants circumcised c.f. Luke 2:21
New Cov - infants baptised
Where does it say in the New Testament not to baptise infants?
Infant Baptism
…
If this the the foundation of the necessity of baptism and infant baptism it is no wonder. This entire post right down to Origen, (Holilies on Leviticus, 8:3:11 [A.D. 244]) and Augustine is founded on miss identifying baptism of water and baptism of SpiritFurthermore, Paul notes that baptism has replaced circumcision (Col. 2:11–12). In that passage, he refers to baptism as “the circumcision of Christ” and “the circumcision made without hands.” Of course, usually only infants were circumcised under the Old Law; circumcision of adults was rare, since there were few converts to Judaism. If Paul meant to exclude infants, he would not have chosen circumcision as a parallel for baptism…
.
He is comparing circumcision with baptism, just replace the word circumcision with baptism.
In Him you were also baptized with the baptism made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the baptism of Christ,
The Baptism of Christ is not of water, every time the scripture reads baptized in the name of Christ it is not referring to water but the HS. See above it become even more clear when you replace circumcision with baptism. “the baptism made without hands.”
Mat 3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
The NT clearly speaks of two baptisms, the Risen Jesus in Acts 1:5 the first words quoted from Him are 5 for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.
Johns baptism water = hands = repentance …Jesus baptism = without hands faith threw grace = Spirit
Now there is one more factor I want to point out The Time of The Jews when the old covenant ends must also be considered in relation to the two baptisms. This is SO necessary to understand when the necessity of water baptism ended. And to understand Johns baptism was for the Jews.
Gabriel
Daniel 9:24 24 “Seventy weeks are determined
For your people and for your holy city,
To finish the transgression,
To make an end of sins,
To make reconciliation for iniquity,
To bring in everlasting righteousness,
To seal up vision and prophecy,
And to anoint the Most Holy.
Gabriel laid out the time of the Jews he goes on to mention Messiah the Prince and the last week.
25 “ Know therefore and understand,
That from the going forth of the command
To restore and build Jerusalem
Until Messiah the Prince,
There shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks;
Gabriel tells the Jews just when to expect Jesus. After the 69th week, 7+62 = 69
Verse 27 the 70th week ending the time of the Jews 24 “Seventy weeks are determined
For your people and for your holy city,
27 Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week;
But in the middle of the week
He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering.
And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate,
Even until the consummation, which is determined,
Is poured out on the desolate.”
He Jesus, Marked the beginning of the 70th week Baptized by John, was anoint with the Holy Spirit. “read verse 24 And to anoint the Most Holy”
He Jesus, Confirmed the covenant “last supper” this is the new covenant. read verse 24
He Jesus, in the middle of the week “bring an end to sacrifice and offering”. on the cross He gave himself ending the need for sacrifices and He even told the Pharisees I leave your house desolate, the very words we see here. read verse 24
There are still 3.5 years left for the time of the Jews, and the beginning of the time of the Gentiles.Marked by Stephens stoning and he testifying that Jesus is now not seated but standing at the Right hand of God Acts 7:56. Peters vision of the unclean and demonstrated immediately afterward testifying to the Spirit coming on the Gentiles by hearing the word. Acts 10:13 Paul also receives his conversion on the Damascus road.
Jewish Law was still in effect 3.5 years after the Cross. The confirmation of the new covenant at the last supper was not in effect until the time of the Jews was completed, marked at its ending when Stephen declares “Look! I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!”
Before this time Jesus is seated. Eph 1:19-21, Heb 8:1, Col 3:1,
Do you see how important it is to understand THE TIME OF THE JEWS the end of the old covenant and the beginning of the new. To also understand the two baptisms.
And I heard a man’s voice between the banks of the Ulai, who called, and said, “Gabriel, make this man understand the vision.
Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, reached me about the time of the evening offering. 22 And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, “O Daniel, I have now come forth to give you skill to understand. 23 At the beginning of your supplications the command went out, and I have come to tell you, for you are greatly beloved; therefore consider the matter, and understand the vision:
24 “ Seventy weeks are determined

To finish the transgression,
To make an end of sins,

I don’t know about this interpretation of Daniel. You are trying to be pretty fine with apocalyptic literature and make it match your theology. But why would the time of the Jews be determined by the stoning of St. Stephen? the only reason you bring this up is you think it fits your timeline. Aren’t there several more likely points to be used as the end of the time of the jews. After all the New testament begins with the conception of John the Baptist in 1BC or thereabouts. The new covenant begins with the resurrection of Jesus in 33AD. The church’s birth is usually defined as the first Pentecost… The end of the requirement for Christians to follow the Jewish laws is the Council of Jerusalem in 49AD. and the end of Jewish Temple worship occurs in 70AD with the destruction of the temple. All of these events are far more noteworthy than the stoning of St. Stephen.. The Baptism of Christ is not of water, every time the scripture reads baptized in the name of Christ it is not referring to water but the HS. See above it become even more clear when you replace circumcision with baptism. “the baptism made without hands.”

It is up to each individual person, after he knows the way of salvation to accept or reject Christ as his savior. He needs no other person with him, nor does time left in his life make a difference. His family background has no effect on his salvation. Regardless of his circumstances, if he receives Christ as his savior the Holy Spirit will come into his heart and he will be saved. RalphWhat if he came from a non-religious family? Would it matter what religion he was? Would it matter if a priest was there to baptize him or if a minister was there to have him accept Jesus? Would he be forgiven if no one was there but the Holy Spirit?
This instruction is contrary to the one provided by Jesus. It is up to each individual person, after he knows the way of salvation to accept or reject Christ as his savior. Going to Catholic grade school and being an altar boy etc etc counts for nothing Ed. Its perfectly clear you got a very poor education - both Catholic and Protestant. You never heard about the blood? “The blood of the new and everlasting covenant which will be shed for all men so that sins may be forgiven?” That doesnt ring any bells? Gee Ed, they only say that every single Mass. Then its followed up with “Behold the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world” Earth to Ed - you there??? Do ya think maybe, just maybe you never quite got past a fifth or sixth grade understanding of the Catholic faith? And I apologize for my negativity. It’s unfortunately become instinctive of me when I hear inferences that Bible-alone Christianity is not based on private interpretation.Well I did not mean to stir such a negative reaction from you.
No, I follow The Church, because following the Bible without an established authority to teach it this side of heaven is a baseless form of Christianity. The Holy Spirit certainly is God, and He is powerful enough to teach the entire world every last truth about salvation and morals by walking them individually through Scripture page by page. CLEARLY, however, this is NOT what His intention is. Does it make perfect sense that He chose not to do it this way? No, not according to my human logic, not really. But much of the methods of God are mysterious to us. It does make perfect sense when you look at salvation history, and the essence of human learning and spiritual growth. This has always occurred by the divine utilization of inspired humans. Prophets in the old, Apostles and their successors in the new. Reality simply reveals that the Spirit does not come to each individual in a vacuum and teach them Christianity through Scripture. Anyone who refuses to believe that, refuses clear evidence that that belief creates a schizophrenic Spirit, specializing in chaos and confusion. You follow interpretation of Matthew 16:18 and a few other verse that establishes the foundation of infallibly.

Not just that but also the exclusive power of the HS, the ability to forgive sins, not just between you and your brother but as an active function in terms of salvation, Jesus forgave sins and the Jews rightly said only God can forgive sins and wrongly accused Him of blasphemy.

With this established and an active component in the form of a human acting in this capacity, traditions, doctrine, that are clearly not found in scripture like the immaculate conception, Mary being sinless, and others have crept in. The problem is that in reality The RCC has done exactly what Israel did. She has placed herself in precisely the same position that the Scribes and Pharisees found themselves in. Their oral law or tradition was so “synthesized” to the written Torah, that judgment of the validity of that unwritten law by means of the written law became an impossibility. Neither could judge the other because both were assumed to have originated with Moses. In the same way RCC has developed an unwritten tradition that she has synthesized with the written New Testament to the degree that it cannot be judged by that New Testament.
I can say an “amen” to that. I am one of those former evangelicals who finally came to a proper understanding of the true history and character of the Christian Church, (aka the Catholic Church). The multitude of confusing, weak and inconsistent positions and messages coming from so many pulpits today is disconcerting to say the least. I couldn’t believe it when I first started seeing people taking their coffees and lattes into the sanctuary! It’s now become common practice. Only in the Mass do I find the sanctity and dignity befitting the Lord’s house. The Catholic Church has also been unwavering in her defense and practice of traditional, Biblical faith and values while so many protestant churches have become “user” and “seeker friendly”. For the first time in years, I look forward to the Sunday morning service. Only now I know that the real presence of Jesus will be there and that the one, true, catholic and apostolic faith will be faithfully presented and celebrated. That’s so weird…the ranks of the Catholic Church are swelling with former evangelicals who are finally coming home after growing weary of the milk that they are given when what they crave is real spiritual meat.
Take good care of them while you have them…we want them fully “prayed up” when they come back, okay?
You understand incorrectly since righteous is infused not imputed. Thanks Philthy (Edited). I appreciate that. However: my faith is in JESUS CHRIST who purchased and redeemed me by his precious blood. He took my sins upon Himself and in return imputed me with His righteousness. That I understand.
Amen! Catholics teach and believe the same thing.I also understand that He (Jesus) was sacrificed ONCE and for all and He now sits as my High Priest at the right hand of God which allows me to have access to the Father.
Amen! However, even Paul encourages intercession (mediation) for one another and requests prayers for himself. That’s all Catholics are talking about.Because Jesus paid the ransom price for my salvation, He is the ONE and ONLY mediator between God and man.
You are ignorant of Catholic teaching with regard to the mass. Jesus is not sacrificed again and again. Time to read some books, Ed.IN CONTRAST! As I see it, your being so very highly intelligent place your faith in the institution of the Roman Catholic church, and in some of their non-Biblical teachings. Such as, Jesus is sacrificed and re-crucified over and over again at Mass.
Jesus is present - not contained.(Edited) He (Jesus) is now bodily contained in a monstrance, to which people genuflect as they enter a church pew.
Paul said, “I preach Christ crucified.” Why did he not say, “I preach Christ resurrected”? The power is in the blood, Ed, shed upon the cross. A crucifix reminds us of what Jesus actually did for us in a way that is far more powerful. Your empty cross reminds us of NOTHING - except your hatred for the Catholic Church. More on this here:(Edited)
As Paul teaches by his own request for prayers. Do you ever pray for your family and friends? Are you an intercessor? A prayer warrior? Good. So is Mary. For help, you (Catholics) turn to co-Redemptrix Mary to interceed for you in prayers.
Please prove that the Catholic Church banned people from reading the Bible until 1964.I may be ignorant, as you say, only because I was taught by Roman Catholic nuns and priests while in grade /high schools, who , as well as I, have been prohibited from reading the Bible because the Roman Catholic church banned it untill 1964.
Of course, Jesus entrusted you to the care of Peter and his successors. A pity you reject Jesus’ plan for his sheep…TO SUMMARIZE: Now, that I’m able to read the Bible for myself, I would much rather be a fool and trust my eternal life in Jesus (Edited). In water baptism we died with Christ, that shows ME that I mean business. That’s not being silly. PTL ED
