Hi to whoever is reading this.

Just to make some things known, I have been a Catholic all my life and I am a 15 year old boy. The topic of masturbation has been stuck in my mind recently and I’d like to have some questions answered.

*How bad of a sin is it? I’ve seen some people say it’s one of the worst sins one can commit, while others encourage it by saying it’s healthy eg. it can prevent cancer

*Can I be forgiven by God if I do it? (I assume I can, but I just want to make sure)

*Will I definitely go to Hell if I do it?

Sorry if this doesn’t sound like a good question to ask, but like any normal teenager, I do get urges to do it, but I want to know if it’s really bad.

Thank you.

It’s a mortal sin which is serious. (See the Catechism)

You need to seek reconciliation through confession if you’ve done this.

If you receive absolution from your priest your relationship with God on this matter is restored to what it was prior to this sin.

There are many posts on this subject which will give you tons of advice and information if you use the search feature on the CaF menu.

Peace be with you.

You might want to use the search feature while you are waiting for answers. Your questions have been asked at least a few times. You might see something there that will help.

Hi there! Thanks for the quick reply.

The only problem is that I can’t see a priest. I’d have to get my mum to take me (which isn’t the problem), but if my dad found out, he’d probably yell at/potentially beat me. He doesn’t like the idea of me going to church (I don’t frequently attend church, although a priest did a blessing on me a few months ago without my dad knowing, but the chances of that happening again are slim), and there’s no opportunities for me to go. Although I’m not against the idea of going to one.

Pray to God and ask his forgiveness and mercy. Don’t sin anymore. Go to a priest when you can. If God knows you genuinely want to confess your sins, he’ll help you find a way.

My dad isn’t Catholic and doesn’t know I’m baptized. My mum had to do it in secret so he didn’t find out and lose his marbles. I haven’t seen a certificate, but I’m not saying it isn’t there. My mum has been a Catholic all her life (like me) but my dad isn’t. There is no abuse whatsoever at this point in time, but if he found out, I’d definitely suffer some injuries.

I have been praying every night for around a year and don’t see myself ever stopping. Thanks for the answer.

The catechism says culpability is mitigated by things like immaturity and force of habit. Since just about every healthy boy discovers this release of tension it is no wonder that so many develop a habit.

Just confess it as any other sin, try to avoid it and move on. Be more concerned about the love you show toward others. Be kind, more focused on other people than your own inner drama over this issue.

Just stop with this. The Church doesn’t teach this. You don’t know all of this young man’s circumstances so you don’t know. And even if you did, you still don’t know. Don’t tell anyone they are going to burn in hell for anything. Actually, I am going to flag your post. As this OP is a youth, you are way out of line.

To be honest, I was kinda scared reading that I was gonna burn in hell. Thanks for the message QwertyGirl!

That’s what I plan on doing. There’s a cool thing called ‘NoFap’ that I plan on starting and I will try my best to succeed.

No combat no victory, no victory no crown.

Peace be with you little brother.

I can’t buy it to due to me being 15, but I’ll see if I can find a pdf online that I can read. Thanks for the recommendation!
