“a controversial theologian who ran into trouble with church authorities earlier in his career for challenging church teaching on artificial birth control and other social issues”

Anyone with this background and knowing what I know about church teaching, I’d just ignore him…

He sure can deceive a lot of Catholics out there. that is why Jesus said to treat them as tax collector, a publican. since the Church has dissobeyed God on this issue, many have been deceived throughout the years. all in teh name of being nice.

Curren, a moral theologian:

"In 1986, the Vatican declared that although a tenured professor, Curran could no longer teach theology at Catholic University of America schools, because “clashes with church authorities finally culminated in a decision by the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, headed by then-Cardinal Josef Ratzinger [now Pope Benedict XVI], that Curran was neither suitable nor eligible to be a professor of Catholic theology.”[2] The areas of dispute included publishing articles that debated theological and ethical views regarding divorce, “artificial contraception”, “masturbation, pre-marital intercourse and homosexual acts.”[3]

The fact that this Priest is in good standing says a lot about Vatican politics. If the 12 Apostles were still in charge, he would have been removed from the clerical state.

I was wondering that. Just how far off the road does a priest have to go before being asked to get out of the driver’s seat?

Permanently.

These moral issues should have been firmed up in seminary.

Catholic Church’s teaching - not your style, there are multiple protestant seminaries to attend.

No one could accuse him of suffering from an excess of humility:
“I disagree, and I`m not alone, but we have been unable to convince the church to make changes.”
Who make up the rest of the “we”? Fr. Hans Kung, Sr. Joan Chittister etc.
That reminds me of the passage:
“My name is Legion; for we are many.” Mark 5:9 RSV
Individuals like him are proof that, ultimately, the Church is protected by the Holy Spirit.

Why do he and other dissenters insist on saying “church”, rather than “Church”?

Oh, right, even St Thomas Aquinas was unsure… do they follow the good saint and Doctor of the Church in all other areas???

How does one become a theologian in the Catholic Church?
It has become common to call ANYBODY who has studied theology, or specialized in it, or who has written books, papers and articles about Catholic Theology, Catholic Theologians. In a certain sense, it is so - they Are Catholics, AND they are theologians. It is dangerous and often erroneous to presume that because they are Catholics AND teaching theology, that the theology they teach IS “Catholic Theology.”
