How can I help my boyfriend understand?

Volunteer and drag - I mean - bring him along.
lol I plan to. I just need to find a way to ask him so he doesn’t see it as me dragging him or it wont do any good at all.
So how long are you willing to wait?
I don’t know. I live a lot of my life on intuition and trust in the Lord that everything will work out. I’ll wait until I feel like I shouldn’t.

Jellie, I haven’t got much time right now, but a lot of what you say describes my ex-BF#2.

No time to type the whole story but I just wanted to add something for you to consider … what’s the yardstick for a non-practising bf or gf really, I mean really, coming back to the church? How/when will you be satisfied he is Catholic enough for marriage? It is really hard to assess this due to the combination of a dating relationship and the lack of an independent track record.

When you’re young and in love (or probably even when you’re middle-aged and in love 😛 ) it’s not so hard to go to Mass on Sundays with the object of your affections for months or maybe even years. But I can tell you from experience that only means so much.

He’s practising his faith when you are certain that even if you two split up the following day he would continue to attend Mass every Sunday on his own, without any other incentive. Someone might go to Mass with you for ages during courtship but if they dont really convert in their hearts, sooner or later within marriage they’ll probably drift away again.

Within a dating/courtship context, couples usually take any opportunity to be together, and if one goes to Mass the other has that bit extra incentive to go as well, just to be together. This can mask (for both parties) the depth of commitment one or other might have to practising their faith. If your bf had gone to Mass on his own all his life before meeting you, you probably wouldn’t need to think about it. If someone who didn’t go to Mass on their own before started attending with me during a dating relationship, that would be great but I would need to be sure they’d continue going to Mass even if I fell off the planet before I’d be confident they’d “stay Catholic” through the ups and downs of a marriage. IMO (if I were in your shoes, kind of thing) the bf needs to be, and demonstrate that he is, truly Catholic in his own heart and mind, completely independent of you and your good influence, before marriage is considered.

Of course I don’t know you or your bf, and I don’t want to sound negative, but I just offer that for what it may be worth to you. I note that you say you would never marry him unless he came back to the church and I’m just thinking about that next step - what really constitutes truly “coming back to the church” and how are you going to know it has happened? I can say from experience that it requires more than just going to Mass with you in the early times of a relationship. Sitting in church for an hour a week with a gf/fiancee/new wife might be part of walking the walk, but it could also just be talking the talk, if you see what I mean.

Jellie,

First off, I want you to know that I’m praying for you and your boyfriend. Secondly, I know it seems like there’s a lot of negativity, and what I am about to write may seem like it, but I’m going to try to say it without beating down anyone.

I’m sure your boyfriend is a great guy. I’m sure he’s good to you and friendly and you two get along great and he’s fun to be with. And that might sound surface, but I’m sure it’s not. But you did mention some things that send of warning bells in my head and obviously in many of the previous posters’ heads. My suggestion, if you’ve not done this before (I did this in 8th grade and kept adding to it) is to sit down and objectively write out two lists of qualities that you want in a future spouse - one list being non-negotiables and one being qualities you’d like in a “perfect” spouse. I’m sure you’ll find practicing Catholic to be in that non-negotiable list - and by practicing, not just going to Mass every Sunday, but also agreeing with the morality our beautiful Church teaches.

Now, there’s always hope that your boyfriend will come back to the Catholic Church in his entirety - that he will see the wrongness in his views on things such as abortion, porn, etc. I know many people who had great, awesome conversions. However, in a dating relationship vs. a friendship, emotions really do get in the way. I’ve been there, done that TWICE. Not to say that you will end up in the same situation - because we’re all different. When a person is in a dating relationship, sometimes they’ll do things just to please that other person. They’ll deny it up and down and promise that they’re doing it for themselves too, but chances are they’re doing it to please that other person who they’re emotionally (and sometimes physically) connected to. Now, with a friendship, the chances of that happening are way less. And it’s easier to tell.

Also, while three months doesn’t necessarily give you a feel for whether or not you’re going to spend the rest of your lives together married, it should give you a good enough idea of the qualities that person possesses and whether or not they fit with the future spouse you want to have by your side. Changing his mind about abortion, about going to Mass regularly is pretty easy compared to the one issue that really sticks in my mind - and that is pornography. Pornography is an addiction and addictions don’t just cease over night. They are a constant struggle. Now, that’s not to say anyone who’s struggled with pornography shouldn’t get married. My own DH had an addiction as a teen (that had been over for a few years before I met him thankfully). But the fact that he still views it, changes his whole attitude towards women and the human body and the dignity of each person. It tends to make the attitude more objectifying and it can really damage a relationship and make you feel like garbage. You may not see it right now, because you’re new in the relationship, but either later down the road or if you took a step back, you may see it. It took breaking up with a previous boyfriend to see how much I had been objectified.

The last thing (and this is definitely going to sound negative if the other stuff didn’t) is that you mentioned not knowing if he’s your future spouse and plenty of time left for that. I want to say that being in a relationship with someone who isn’t going to be your spouse and just dating because you like him and he’s a great guy, closes the door for the possibility of meeting and falling in love with that potential future spouse. Sure, it’s all in God’s timing, not yours, but you still need to put yourself in a place that allows that to happen. You also said he is your first boyfriend - and I know that sometimes it’s hard to see when you’ve never been in a serious relationship before. Not that he has no possibility of being your future husband, but if he’s not and he continues to reject your faith and your morals (which he IS doing by arguing with you and not going to Mass and still looking at porn), once you step away and meet that man who’s totally, devoutly Catholic and handsome and funny and the list could go on and on, who will sweep you off your feet, you’ll see the difference.

For me, that happened. I had been in two really unhealthy relationships in high school. I broke up with my boyfriend of 2 years (who I thought I might marry, even though he wasn’t Catholic - I was going to convert him even though he’d been putting up a fight the whole time and refused to go to Mass with me EVER until after we broke up) after 1 month in college. 1.5 years later, I met my DH, but he was dating a girl back home who he thought he might end up marrying even though she wasn’t Catholic and had the opposite morality that he did. 1 year after that, we were both single, met up again, and fell head over heels in love. When he kissed me for the first time and on after that, I could feel the difference - he didn’t objectify me and he did it completely out of love for me. 1 week after we began dating, he told me he loved me and I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him…I think it took him about 3 weeks after that to feel the same. When you know, generally you don’t have to question…

But no one is going to change your mind if it’s set on staying with this guy. I do wish you both the best and will pray that he sees the Truth. 🙂
And I am anxious to hear what he has to say about the porn stuff. You shouldn’t be scared (although it’s understandable)…honesty and constant communication are key to a successful and happy marriage!
lol I plan to. I just need to find a way to ask him so he doesn’t see it as me dragging him or it wont do any good at all.
Oh, and also, you might approach it as something you thought would be FUN to do together, to get to see a different side of each other while helping others! If you’re both in a frat and sorority, wouldn’t it be pretty easy to bring up? I was never in one, but from what I understand from friends who were, they really are big on volunteering and such. It’s all about learning and growing together :D. I remember the first time I took DH to an abortion clinic to pray…it was quite the eye-opener for him and he was hooked! 🙂

Relationships where one is trying to “help” someone become what they think that person should be NEVER WORK. Young women see young men they think are projects, kill themselves trying to “fix” them, thinking that when his life is all sunlight and roses, he’ll finally wake up and be grateful. He’ll give you all the credit for his wonderful life, love you eternally, and you will feel special and worthy.
One needs to be prudent, I agree, and I don’t suggest the OP get her hopes up about this relationship. But really, “NEVER” would be an untruth. SOME men will change for the right woman AND by the grace of God if they are willing to see it… It is a risk one has to assess in choosing that path. There have been many posts on that here on CAF and I know that I am not alone. My wife openened my eyes to the faith and to my faults and failings. But I will remind the OP that it took many, many years and it wasn’t by her love alone but through the grace of God. The OP needs to proceed with utmost caution.
Men resent constantly being told they need to change. If he does change, he’ll most likely feel emotionally blackmailed into it, harbor resentment, and eventually, return to the way he is and wants to be. By then you’ll have three or four kids, and he will be turning your oldest son onto porn, thinking it is a rite of passage for a young boy. And then you’ll be on the board asking us what to do…
While true, I don’t know a single women that loves to hear that they need to change, either. And we don’t have a crystal ball to know how this individual will act in the face of this situation. I agree that nagging, itself, never changes anyone. And many problems in marriage have to do with the nagging, not the issue that needs to be addressed.

I think the OP did a brave thing to confront this young man’s problems. If it only plants a seed for the his future, then I would claim it to be a success. Great job, Jellie!👍

Let us know what happens!

Jellie…

when you boyfriend watches porn he is having sex with women and with him self and he is not saving himself for you. Period. He is having pictures of extremely distorted sex and strange looking women bodies stuck in his brains for years… You need to have self respect and demand respect from him. Demand chastity.
These issues are not small… they are huge. Pray for a good Catholic guy who will love you and treat you right and that you want to get serious with.
As for relationships and purity TRUST ME its very hard to be close with a guy and be intent on keeping pure while he has no problem violating his own and your purity… I have been in that situation and it takes TWO people who are intent on being very careful with each other’s purity and their own to succeed in staying pure. You wanna loose your innocense and regret it afterwards?.. the shortest way to loose your innocense is to be alone with a boyfriend who is full of homones and who will not control himself. The abuse of porn/masturbation will diminish his self control too. And believe me… you can get tempted.

I don’t want you to go through the same misery I have been through so I think you should really think about this long and hard and set some higher standards.

Here’s the story of how he reacted when he read my e-mail about porn:

–it doesn’t start off very well–

First off, he wasn’t in the right frame of mind when he read it. I’m not defending him, it was just the worst possible time for him to read the e-mail. He had just had a fight with his mom over something stupid, and he was still angry.

So, he e-mails me back with all the reasons he likes porn and ends it with “so in conclusion this message was useless and now u know u shouldnt send me these silly messages… ok bebe ttyl 🙂 lol”

I was so mad at him I was ready to end us right then and there. I don’t get angry easily but I have NEVER been more enraged then I was at that moment. Needless to say, we had a huge fight.

It ended yesterday with a long phone call in which I yelled at him alot, and I hate yelling. Sadly, we didn’t resolve the porn thing, but we did talk about alot of other stuff like his temper and his closemindedness.

We are still together. There are many reasons why I still think he deserves more time to change, and I know that if he does it will be a long time from now.

One of the main things is that he has never pushed for a physical relationship. We kiss, and that’s as far it goes. He’s never even tried for anything more. I know that he is with me for all of the right reasons.

He is a genuine person, and he wouldn’t change just to please me. If he did he would already have pretended to change. I know that when/if he does come back to the faith it will be true and lasting. He does nothing half way.

He is not perfect and has many serious flaws, but I trust him. I thank God everyday for having him in my life. I will continue to pray for him, and just wait and see what happens.

It really bothers me because he watches porn and wont go to mass on sundays. I try to ignore it because i don’t know what else to do. But I really care about him, and i want him to have a close relationship to God.
Is this someone you want to spend any time with, let alone possibly a lifetime together? the porn habit alone would be a deal breaker for me or any of my daughters. that means at best an immature sexual adujustment with the problems that implies, and at worst a deep seated moral and psychological problem. certainly does not bode well for any women with whom he has a relationship.

Here’s the story of how he reacted when he read my e-mail about porn:

It doesn’t end very well either.
So, he e-mails me back with all the reasons he likes porn
And, what were his reasons?
and ends it with “so in conclusion this message was useless and now u know u shouldnt send me these silly messages… ok bebe ttyl 🙂 lol”
So, now expressing your thoughts and feelings is “silly” and you shouldn’t do so.
We are still together. There are many reasons why I still think he deserves more time to change, and I know that if he does it will be a long time from now.
That’s your perogative.
One of the main things is that he has never pushed for a physical relationship.
This is a rather minimalist perspective, as if this is some sort of feat for which he deserves praise instead of a basic requirement for the privilege of dating you!

Have you heard the song Settlin’ by Sugarland?

Girl, you need to raise the bar high.

So, he e-mails me back with all the reasons he likes porn and ends it with “so in conclusion this message was useless and now u know u shouldnt send me these silly messages… ok bebe ttyl 🙂 lol”
Wow, I think this would have been a deal breaker for me. Even leaving aside the whole porn issue, to belittle your concerns in such an immature manner was really not acceptable. I don’t care what the extenuating circumstances were, he was being very disrespectful. You deserve better.

I can see that you love him, and I think it’s admirable that you’re sticking up for him. But honestly, this exchange doesn’t paint a very good picture of him. I know you want to help him, and that is great. It doesn’t look to me like he wants to be helped, though.

And why should one need to “help” one’s boyfriend or girlfriend? They are supposed to be our best friend and trustworthy confidant; not someone who needs “fixing” in some way.

PS: Not talking about helping him fix his car or helping him do something around the house - that kind of help is what friends are for. But helping him become a civilized human being? That’s his Mom’s job.

Jellie, I am a father of teenaged daughters, and have read this thread with great interest. My heart aches for you.

If you were my daughter, my advice to you would be this is your first boyfriend. He’s not a keeper. Move on before your heart is in jeopardy. I mean, the man DEFENDS porn instead of being ashamed of viewing it.

All of the people on this thread can not be wrong, can they? We’ve all been there. Listen to our advice.

While I believe that a husband and wife are called to get each other into heaven, you have no obligation to a boyfriend of three months.

This will not end well if you stay with him.

Good grief, if I was dating someone who thought I deserved time to change, I’d be out of the relationship.

Come on, dating someone and waiting for them to be good enough? How demeaning.

**Well Jellie, sorry to break it to ya, but he isn’t pushing for a physical relationship BECAUSE he is ahem looking at other women instead and doing who-knows-what when looking at them. 🤷 **

**BINGO!! I could see if he was ashamed of what he is looking at (as in it’s an ‘addiction’ that he’s trying to kick), but he’s not!!! So therefore, if it were me, I’d move on NOW before it’s too late!! 🤷 **

Jellie, I hope you realize that most of the people posting on this thread are older than you, and definitely don’t mean to sound harsh, or be party-poopers, or to be judgmental.

It’s just that most of us, since we’re older, have “been there, done that” and are concerned for you since it seems that you’re setting yourself up for heartbreak.

It’s very admirable that you want him to share good Christian, Catholic values with you, but… have you ever heard the old saying: “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink” ?

So, he e-mails me back with all the reasons he likes porn and ends it with “so in conclusion this message was useless and now u know u shouldnt send me these silly messages… ok bebe ttyl 🙂 lol”
Jellie, I have to admit this does sound very immature. I think instead of spending so much enegry on arguing with him over this, you need to think about ending the relationship.

You simply say : “look, I love you but I can’t be a part of this, it’s simply too important to me. It’s going to cause more of a wedge of discourse between us if you continue down this road and I don’t want that because I care about our friendship, if you can’t stop then I feel it’s time to cut all romantic ties between.”

This doesn’t mean it has to over for good. Perhaps down the road, if you are that important to him then he will come to his senses.

Here’s my take on it. If a man seriously cares about you then he will embrace everything about you and that includes making some changes. As it stands right now, he has the best of both worlds, he has you and his porn. This is not fair to you nor is it respectful.

In the end, believe it or not, he will respect you even more and this may even cause him to reflect on God in his life. This will happen if you mean that much to him.

My orignal thought was to give him a chance but it sounds like you have already exhusted this approach. I would move forward to the next step.

don’t want to add to what has already been said I think every angle has been covered, but I do want to pray for you and your bf.

:gopray: Father God a soul is at risk and another dear soul is willing to stand in the gap for him. I lift her to you and ask for Your protection on her as she tries to win her bf’s soul. Direct her Lord and lead her as you protect her from heartbreak. We pray that she would be used as a tool to soften him and lead him back to the faith or even to the faith for the first time. I praise You that their are young people who are still close to Your heart. I praise You that she is so willing to follow You. Continue to strengthen her and mold her to be the women You dersire her to be

May the Blessed Mother pray for us all…

Hey Jellie

Unfortunately you b/friend seems to be rejecting the catholic teachings. Not being religious myself, i don’t think this mades him a bad person or anything. However it does mean your views are incompatible i’m afraid which will obviously make any relationship virtually impossible.

Andy
