How can one make a Bible look older?

Hello everyone,

A friend of mine is going to attend an event with some friends as a character (a genre called LARP. Look it up :p), and has run into an issue. His character is a monk who travels from place to place helping those in need and performing acts of charity; on his person (his character’s), he carries a copy of the New Testament, which he inherited from his mentor. He uses this Bible to read, during meditation and at public gatherings. Unfortunately, the curators of the event he is going to have a tendency to be very strict, and he is unsure if they will approve a Bible in “new” condition, as it is not genre-appropriate. He does not have access to a naturally-worn/ragged Bible, but an old-looking Bible may be his only option. Is there any way he can take the Bible he has (which he purchased from the dollar store) and make it appear withered, without committing sacrilege?

I’d like to add that my friend has told me that he chose this kind of character in order to spread the messages of Christ through this game. I was happy to hear he did so.

Any thoughts? Advice?
 
I’d make an extra cover out of old cardboard, and fix it over the new one. If you can get hold of some black card and scuff it, that would give a good result. Or cover the card with shabby black cloth.
 
  • Always have a hot cup of Ovaltine nearby.
  • Use a vintage stick of Beeman’s gum (or another defunct brand) as a page marker.
  • Write your name across the pages or on the front/back cover in a Schaffer cartridge pen.
  • If you can’t find a Quill.
  • Also carry a copy of the Iliad.
  • Or a brand NEW copy of the Catechism
  • Leave a coupon for the Early Bird Special protruding
  • Wear a pair of Bob Cratchit gloves with the fingers cut off
  • Drop a blob of sealing wax on the cover and stamp it with something that looks official.
  • Keep it overnight in a baggieful of mothballs and taffy. Retrieve it with cottonballs.

    – On the other hand - purgatory for maligning holy things may be too high a price to pay.
 
Alternatively, it might be worth checking our a thrift or used book store or the like and see if they have one.

Or eBay? The ones that are truly in bad condition are usually fairly inexpensive, and if it’s only for purposes of the role playing 🤷
 
I like challenges like this. I would take the Bible and cover it with a plastic book cover. Then I would make paper mache (never did learn to spell it) out of tissue paper and simple glue - even flour and water. Several layers. Then I would use something clear and varnishy over the rough paper. I’s then paint it a leathery brown colour and probably add a few bits of gold paint to make it look like gold lettering had worn off. I would colour any lightish bits black using a felt-tip. Actually, to be perfectly honest I would not do any of that, because I would not get around to it. But if I were a better person, that is what I would do.😃 Then when the event was over, the Bible could emerge from its plastic wrapper as good as new. By the way old black diaries of the sort people used before they used their phones look a lot lie Bibles, and may be considered less holy as objects.

To make one look older? Use it often.🙂
