How can we ever apologise for the Holocaust?

WHy does it seem to always be a “new member” who comes out with the anti-semetic comments? A non-jew starts a thread about the holocaust.and it ends up being a forum to express disgust at Jews for “whining” about the holocaust. I believe this pretty much says it all.
Why is it, when someone states that the Jewish Holocaust is given disporportionate attention, and other genocides are ignored, that they are slanderously accused of being an anti-Semite. Actually, I personally have the ‘right of return’ myself, so I have the inside scoop, so to speak.

Please understand that just because two words were given a specific connotation by one group doesn’t mean that everyone who uses them afterwards also intends for them to have that same specific connotation. Do you really think that everyone who speaks of someone getting “special treatment” means that this someone is getting sent to a Nazi concentration camp? I was referring to the Jewish victims of the Holocaust getting more attention than victims of other genocides, or non-Jewish victims of the Holocaust.

Please show me where in any of my posts I said that Jews shouldn’t get any attention. I would appreciate it if you wouldn’t twist my words around.

And to avoid getting wiped off the face of the map, Israel should just go ahead and wipe its neighbours off the map instead? If you want to debate this, please start another thread. I’m just pointing out that Israel uses the excuse of self-defence from what someone might do to justify some pretty bad actions.
No. What you are doing is making a general statement, then saying it doesn’t belong here. Then making another general statement. I don’t have to twist your words around. Your posts are quite clear, thank you.

The bombing of Israel from Lebanon was what someone might do? The suicide explosions were what someone might do? The stigmatization of Isreal at that bogus UN Durban Conference on Human Rights was what someone might do?

You are blaming the victim.

As for the OP: I believe we should remember the Shoa and other genocides and bend over backward to prevent future genocides. I also believe that we should be good Catholics and refrain from tarring the name of whole races of people. That is all I am saying. I am leaving this thread now because it is going downhill.

Maybe it is when they say things like: “Most Jews love to wallow in their collective victim status, and will defend their right to do so, even as they sit in their ivory towers and drive their Mercedez Benzes.” Us sensitive types tend to lable such language anti-semetic.

There is a reason why there are so few Christians in the entertainment business, and it has nothing to do with “Jews.”

Many Christians, both Catholic and Protestant, are still debating on whether entertainment, especially performing arts, is “Christian.” I know a lot of Christian who won’t go to movies, refuse to go to plays that aren’t overtly Christian, that won’t visit art museums, and that won’t read any literature except Christian works. And there are a lot of Christians who don’t watch any TV.

How can Christians be represented in a field that many of them consider evil and many know nothing about?

When my older daughter decided to earn a college degree in theater and enter the entertainment field, there were only SIX Christian (Protestant) colleges in the United States that offered a degree in theater. Many of the Protestant colleges didn’t even have a theater department. (I don’t know if it’s changed in recent years.)

I don’t know about the Catholic colleges.

But until Christians can wrap their arms around the idea that the arts are not “of the devil” or “worldly,” then we will NOT have a good representation in the entertainment business.

And until Christians can “lower themselves” to associate with others who do not share their beliefs, they will NOT enter theater careers. One of my friends is a professional dancer, and she says that at least half of the people in show business are gay–a lot of Christians wouldn’t know how to handle this. And a lot of show business people have a “colorful” vocabulary–my daughter says that the “f” word is the word of choice for many of her friends. And a lot of show business people drink and party (networking)–many Christians–and I’m one of them–simply don’t feel comfortable in this environment. I am in awe of my daughter who comfortably circulates among the “arts” people in her city while still maintaining a Christian testimony (she’s converting to Catholicism).

And until Christian parents encourage their children to enter financially risky entertainment careers instead of safe, financially-rewarding careers, Christians will continue to be under-represented in the entertainment field. It is TOUGH to pay for college wondering if your kid will end up waiting tables and selling Mary Kay to make enough money to share a tenement with 3 other out-of-work actors. (Our daughter makes a living in technical theater; she even has insurance and benefits–woowoo!)

By the way, when you talk about “entertainment industry,” you’re talking about the Big Time–Hollywood, New York. But at the local level, many, many theaters have a good representation of non-Jews. Our local theaters (live theater, not movie theaters) are run by Christian people–yes, overtly Christian people. I would venture to say–although it’s just my opinion–that at the local level in many cities, you would find that Jews do NOT run the shows at all.

Jews generally involve themselves in non-religious activites as individuals, not as Jews. The number of Jews working in an industry has nothing to do with the degree of control of such an industry. Just as I would not say because our president is christian that christian’s control the government.

Maybe because so many of them sing kumbaya at summer camp. The Jewish summer camp I worked at taught dance, voice, and produced musicals every summer. One summer it was Charlie Brown and Hair. There was an emphasis on excellence, not condescension. Expectations were placed on the kids.

Of course. They obviously haven’t been occupying Palestine for decades, they haven’t invaded Lebanon on more than one occasion… I don’t know why I didn’t see it before - of course Israel and its army are just victims, since they haven’t done a single violent or oppressive thing. Silly me.

Occupyiing Palestine? No country by that name has ever existed-at least in modern times. The land the “palestinians” are demanding was mostly in the hands of the Arabs unitl 1968. Why was no Palestinian State set up then? Of course the Government of “Palestine” calls for the elimnination of Israel . Silly them. Imagine them having and army when all their neigbors want to do is kill each and every one of them.

We cannot genuinely apologize for something we had no part in…but we can offer respect and understanding…and never forget as another poster said. My kids are learning about this horrific event in school now…thankfully. It’s something I think no history class should go without.

I think though asking us to apologize for the Holocaust (as ancestors of Euproeans) is akin to innocent Muslims having to apologize for terrorism done in the name of Islam. They cannot be seen as permitting these tragedies…they are simply out numbered, and strong armed into submission. Same with those who would have gone against the Nazi party during WWII. But there were those who hid Jews and tried to do their parts, but many were simply put…afraid. It’s hard to judge what any of us might have done, given the same circumstances.

Just my $.02

The Holocaust occurred at a time when Britain was at war with Germany. We have no cause to apologise for not taking vigorous action against that regime.
It is off thread. But I regret I am not convinced Britain took any action against the regime beyond serving her own domestic interests against which, ‘the regime’ was the lesser of two evils 😛

Palestine may not be an official state, but there is a region called “Palestine”, inhabited by people called “Palestinians”. The fact that they have been denied their own state does not mean that it’s okay for them to be occupied by the Israeli army (under some pretty harsh conditions I might add). I have no problem with Israel having an army, just with them using that army to kill innocent civilians in Palestine and Lebanon, build walls that cut Palestinians off from their food and water supplies (Israel has been called on human rights abuses in this but who cares about the human rights of Palestinian civilians, since as you pointed out, they don’t have their own state like Israel does)…the list goes on and on. I guess I’m just not smart enough to see that the people who are denying basic human rights to Palestinians are just the victims in all of this.

There is no denying that Judaism is the natural root and origin of our faith. Judaism is our true ancestry.

We as Chritians are closer to Judaism than any other religion 🙂

So they are occupying a country that doesnt exist, never has existed and populated by a people that have vowed to kill each and everyone of them When they have given them home rule they have used their sovereignty to shoot missles into Israael in an attempt to kill as many of them as they can. But you think they are the victims.

Why didnt the arabs give them the land when they had it? Why doesnt Syria and Jordan try an assimilate them instead of frocing them to stay in camps? How do you negotiate with people who deny your right to exist?

The Jewish state, Israel, came into existence more than 1300 years before the birth of Jesus Christ and 2000 years before Islam existed. The Jewish people have lived in the country for more than 3000 years and resisted Greeks, Persians, Syrians, Romans and legions of other tyrants… There never was a Palestine.

After the Romans murdered hundreds of thousands of Jews and destroyed entire cities they attempted to expunge any trace of Jews and Judaism from Israel. Thus they renamed the land after the ancient Philistines, a people who had creased to exist. Modern Arabs who call themselves Palestinians certainly have a valid claim to justice and peace but their ties to Israel are relatively recent.

Their claims to Jerusalem have even less historical justification. It was the capital of the Jewish state for 3300 years and when it was relatively briefly in Jordanian hands no Arab leader came to visit it… Muslims often have more freedom of worship in Israel than they do in many of the 22 Muslim states that currently exist, very few of which boast even basic human rights.

Nor do the Arab Muslim countries boast many Jews. More than a million Jewish citizens, most of whom had lived in these nations for centuries and in the case of Iraq and others pre-dated the rise of Islam, were forcibly removed after the resurrection of Israel in 1948…
