I’ve seen the Dalai Lama, and GREATLY admire his teachings, but there is no way I’d ever convert to become a Buddhist.

It IS possible to admire religious leaders, and even aspects of their religions, without feeling a need to join said religion.

I admire traditional Roman Catholicism to an extent: the Tridentine Latin High Mass, Gregorian chant, the classical music used in the Traditional Mass, etc., but certainly not enough to make me want to join the religion.

Because at the blink of an eye, this humble servant of God attracts thousands of people with his faith and his messages. Clearly he is guided by the Holy Spirit as an unbroken link from Jesus as given to St. Peter 2,000 years ago. Because this man is holy as Jesus was. Because this man gave up his life along with others, including bishops and priests to deliver the word of God. Because this man represents all Catholics, 1.5 billion of them. Because he is the Vicar of Christ. Because God is with him. Need more reasons? And as far as your comment about the Dalai Lama, Buddha didn’t die for our sins. Only Jesus did.

Well written. I’ve worked for traditional Mennonites before and highly respect them. But this does not mean I want to become a Mennonite.

I agree 100%. I especially admire the Old Order Amish, and the way they practice forgiveness as part of their everyday life is truly remarkable. Like most of the world, I was absolutely stunned at the way they forgave the man who killed their children at the Nickel Mines Schoolhouse in Lancaster Co., PA in 2006.

Now if ANY group of Christians could inspire me to become Christian, it would be them! Because with them, I saw, for the first time in my life, genuine Christianity in ACTION. They have such a serenity and peacefulness about them.

I admire the Amish FAR more. They, too, are Christians, yet they don’t shove their religious beliefs onto other people, do not act triumphalistic, do not act tense, hostile, boastful, proud, or angry, and actually DO what Jesus commanded them to do, which is FORGIVE their enemies.

They forgave a man who shot their children at point blank range and killed 5 of them. And they did it without hostility, rage, tension or anger.

Could YOU have done that?

Yes, that event happened close to home for me. At the time, I was attending an Eastern Catholic church. The priest in his homily spoke highly of these Amish for the forgiveness they showed.

I haven’t personally known any Old Order Amish. I’ve only worked with traditional Mennonites, who are somewhat different–but I did see in them serenity and peacefulness. I would only add the caveat that they too are human; their communities, while perhaps better than some, are not utopias. Actually, I probably won’t be returning to Amish country for a while. In just a few weeks, I’m going to an area for over a month to look for a job. The place is an Orthodox Jewish stronghold. It should be interesting. If anyone asks me what religion I am, I’ll have to qualify my “Orthodox” answer.

Its curious you brought that up; my older daughter and I were discussing that very thing today! we were studying Hamlet, and discussing how Hamlet wanted to murder his uncle not while he was praying and receiving forgiveness for his sins, but after he’d committed more, and that way he’d go straight to hell. We were both appalled that someone could hate another person that much, to want to send them to hell.

I then told her I was always similarly shocked at the attitudes of those outside the death house when someone is to be executed, how they cheer for the person’s execution.

Being pro-life, I’m against capital punishment for both the born and unborn.
