Rome, Italy, May 21, 2016 / 06:01 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Recognizing the difference between a person who’s possessed and a person struggling with a mental illness or other infirmity is a vital part of the ministry of exorcism, according to a long-time exorcist and priest.
Father Cipriano de Meo, who has been an exorcist since 1952, told CNA’s Italian agency ACI Stampa that typically, a person is not possessed but is struggling with some other illness.
The key to telling the difference, he said, is through discernment in prayer on the part of the exorcist and the possessed – and in the potentially possessed person’s reaction to the exorcist himself and the prayers being said.

If their neck can turn through 360[sup]O[/sup], that’s a telling sign…🙂

Hmmm. I can do slightly over 90 degrees, does that make me a quarter posessed?

More seriously, prayer and discernment is often so underrated and so vital for all of us, let alone those supposedly posessed.

Not to mention:

Don’t try to skip out on the exorcist’s bill, else you might get repossessed.

As folks get older and their necks start to fossilize, would that mean they become progressively dispossessed?? 🙂

Ohhh. Tough crowd, particularly for an old gal.

Sometimes I wonder if you can tell just by looking into their eyes.

I know officially that the Church does not encourage this way of knowing, but sometimes when you look into someone’s eyes, they are filled with hate and animosity.

Another way of looking at it is that some people are incredibly mean…they do terrible things to their kids. They also go out with a gun and kill for no reason. Maybe they don’t seem possessed in the “official” way, but they might be killing under the devil’s control.

Some people just seem hostile to God and the Church in general. Some have a hard time going to a church service; they become restless and need to leave.

Not that everyone is possessed, but I think it’s a good idea to keep these things in mind when dealing with someone who seems more hateful than usual or who has antipathy towards anything dealing with God.

“A man’s eyes, a man’s nose, his forehead, his ears — none of these things… has anything to do with the mind behind them.”

Eric Ambler

People have tried to sound out each other’s psyche by such physiognomonic landmarks since time began, and always failed, many times with tragic results.

As long as Satan is in our world, I believe that almost everyone is possessed to some degree.

Full demonic possession is very rare and only occurs a few times a year according to Fr.Chad Ripperger who is a excorcist of the Omaha Diocese. If you have the time listen to his audio or video talks on excorcism.
Yeah, one of my parish priests talked to us about this. He said on Day 1 of his assignment he started getting calls. Gets a few every week.

He said 99.99999999% of people got referred by him to the nice Catholic Charities counselors next door.

A tiny tiny tiny few got sent up the chain. Some of those were probably found to be mentally ill by better trained authorities.

A few he solved by pointing out that the person was living a sinful life and maybe the dark forces they felt were there because they thought the person was their buddy.

He also was quite amused by the number of people who called him on the advice of their Protestant minister. But the vast majority of those ended up just needing a mental health professional as well.

Sometimes I think we look for explanations that are better than what the truth is. When I look into a hateful persons eyes, I don’t immediately think “demon”. I think hey, that’s an evil person…

I heard the other day that in one scene from The Exorcist, there was a recording from an actual exorcism where the voice of the demon was heard. No wonder that movie scared the **** out of me.
