How come so many Catholics don't follow Church Teachings?

I know of so many famous Catholics who support sinful things that go against Church teachings. Why do they do that? The CCC teaches that those things are wrong. But, I know of many Catholics who support abortion, the LGBTQ community, birth control, etc… Many Catholic colleges and Schools have pro-abortion and pro-LGBTQ events/speakers. I just don’t understand why, since those things blatantly contradict Church teachings. We must pray for those confused Catholics!!! 🙏 Any thoughts on this? Thank You!!! 🙂

Because they believe the “sinful” things to not be sinful. I can’t think of a stronger reason.

Another reason I would suggest is that they are ‘culturally Catholic’ but don’t actually think of Catholicism in a deeper/more meaningful capacity.

Those things aren’t important. It’s better to stand up for what we know is right. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Matthew 6:2
“Thus, when you give alms, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by men. Truly, I say to you, they have their reward.”
They indeed are in great need of prayer.

I see so many thread like this and wish I could edit the title to read, “Why do people sin differently than I do?”

If you see a systemic or institutional problem, contact your priest or bishop. Otherwise, leave people alone and quietly pray for them.

hypocrite |ˈhipəˌkrit|
noun
a person who indulges in hypocrisy.
ORIGIN
Middle English: from Old French ypocrite, via ecclesiastical Latin from Greek hupokritēs ‘actor,’ from hupokrinesthai (see hypocrisy)
They are actors, right? Ah, but thank the Lord, not all are.

I get what you are saying, but the OP really is asking something different. She is asking why so many people disregard Church teaching.

And I think it is because people want to do what they want to do and they either don’t care that it’s a sin, or they don’t actually know it is a sin.

Apologies if I misread it.

Both of your reasons could be apt. There are also those who struggle with Church teaching on some issues. They’ve given it more serious thought than, “Well, I don’t like that so I’ll do whatever I want!” Hopefully either way, they’re in contact with their priests or receiving some kind of spiritual direction.

One thought – As a Catholic if you do not know Jesus and the living Gospel you live a life contrary to what Christ has taught, what the Church teaches – also ignorance is sadly a part of that story. People will study how to make things, how to fix things, and how to improve their lives but study the scriptures, study the Catechism is not on their list of things to do.

How exciting! A question I can actually answer from first hand knowledge.

Lack of belief in everything the Church teaches. That is to say, they believe in some things and not in others. That is your answer, in a nutshell.

Contrary to popular belief here, it isn’t due to laziness or picking or choosing. It is due to genuine (frequently educated, I will add) lack of belief in some of the things being taught.

Know that many of those people spend a lifetime searching for answers. Again, they aren’t just being lazy.

with being supportive of the LGBTQ community?
One thing is to support an LGBTQ person as a person suffering from an objective disorder. Another thing is to support the building of a “community” of such persons which in practise is designed to enable further disordered conduct.

Do not assume everyone who is gay lived as they lived in Sodom and Gomorrah.

Luke 6:37

sometimes people tend to forget that those who sin need to be reminded of God’s forgiveness and grace… and not constantly be reminded of their sin.

CINO - love it!

But in fact can they really call themselves Catholic? By analogy, if I paid my party membership of the Socialist Party but then opposed the key tenets of socialism, could I really say I was a socialist?
