How common is actual demonic possession?

Very rare.
Whats more common is demonic oppression and obsession. Temptation is the most common of all demonic activity.

I encourage you to listen to sermons by Fr. Chad Ripperger. He is an excorcist and an expert in spiritual warfare.

According to the head exorcist in Rome, possessions are becoming more common in Europe and North America. They happen elsewhere in the world too but exorcising demons in other places is much easier.

It’s also not an easy question to answer because possession doesn’t always manifest obvious symptoms, especially if the person is cooperative with it.

Malici Martin book " hostage to the devil" gives illustrations and examples of real situations.
Or blake healy . wrote a book " the Vail" on the ministry he is called to .
Both are Interesting reads.

Perhaps a better question to ask would have been: how common are exorcisms in the United States? I understand that they are rare; I’m trying to figure out how rare.

In the west, it is not very common. Elsewhere on earth, it is considerably more common. Why?

In the west, the devil has already lured us away from God via materialism. Possession occurs mostly in those who participate overtly occult practices, those under some explicit curse. Elsewhere on earth, because of various earthly and animist religions and occult practices, it tends to be much more common.

If you encounter a priest from, say Africa or India, ask them about it.

If this is not a Catholic Priest appointed as an exorcist, I would be very wary.

Watch the youtubes of Father Gary Thomas, a Diocesan appointed exorcist

He states there is possession, oppression and another way demons can influence. One exorcist says the better description is of demons attaching themselves in some form, to a person.

Looking at it now on Amazon, how does it mesh with Catholic teaching would you say?

The solemn rite of exorcism is rarely performed in the United States. As an example Fr. Gary Thomas (who is one of if not the most prominent exorcist in the country due to being public with his ministry) stated in a 2017 interview that during all of 2016 he had only five cases that required the solemn rite and that was an especially busy year. In most cases the victims can be freed with deliverance prayers.

There are also other exorcism rites such as those for an object or building which are far more common. Then there are minor rites of exorcism that are found in the old baptismal rite, blessing of holy water and blessed salt.

Did he say in the interview how many cases were presented to him that didn’t require exorcism? He says he had five cases that required exorcism but if for example he only had ten cases altogether that would be very different than if he had a hundred cases or a thousand cases and only five out of those needed exorcism.

He didn’t give a number of cases but in the same interview he mentioned he has enough cases to go full time with his ministry but his bishop wouldn’t let him because he’d get burnt out.
