How could the human soul be immortal if it is sustained?

Well you asked “Are we simple?” We are each body and soul together. For the human soul, the answer is that the soul has no parts, it is therefore simple, but it is not without accidents. The faculties are its proper accidents.
I forgot what accident was. How is it related to our discussion?
Simple is the quality of not having parts, hence undivided and not composite. Some may think that something having a property (an accident) means that it is composite, which is not true.

I can buy that. The rational soul has a set of properties and is simple. I am wondering that what is the difference between the rational soul and God when it comes to immortality? They are both simple.

A rational soul is created by God, but God is not created.

A rational soul is created by God, but God is not created.
You need to read my question carefully: I am wondering that what is the difference between the rational soul and God when it comes to immortality? I know that you believe that God is not created whereas our souls did.

The detailed answer was given in Modern Catholic Dictionary.
  • Absolute immortality is possessed by God alone, who has no body and whose spirit is eternal by essence. He cannot not exist; he always has been and must be.
  • Natural immortality belongs to all spiritual beings, namely the angels and human souls, who are created indeed and therefore begin, but since they are simple by nature and have no parts, they will not die, although absolutely speaking, they could be annihilated by an act of God.

I need a proof. Not a definition.

Incorrect definition of death. A better definition of death would be separation of body and soul. So asking if soul can die is an unanswerable question, just like asking if God can create a rock so heavy He can’t lift. bad.
My answer to you is: incorrect question. The soul is immortal because it is sustained by God. The soul cannot exist in any other way. A human soul must be sustained by God to exist as a soul. If a soul was not sustained by God it would not be a human soul therefore making the question inadequate. So asking if a human soul can be immortal if it is sustained is like asking if a rock can be natural if it is natural.

God Bless

Immortality means never dying. The Human soul is believed to be immortal. Soul, however, is sustained by God. This means that the soul would perish if God doesn’t sustain it anymore. This means that the soul is mortal.
Except for the fact, that the one who creates EVERYTHING that is, continues to sustain the human soul forever, …

So the yes answer was given before:
So, God is not the first mover of human soul anymore after its creation?
God is the first mover and wills the existence of the immaterial immortal soul in natural immortality. The soul does not perish with the body,

God sustains the human soul, and God will never allow a human soul to cease to exist. How much more reliable does it have to be, to count as immortal?

It’s immortal because it’s sustained by God.

God creates through His Word. An analogy to God’s creative act is the linguist’s theory of the declaration form of the word-act.
Declaration – a type of illocutionary act which brings a change in the external situation. Simply put, declarations bring into existence or cause the state of affairs which they refer to. Some examples of declarations are blessing, firing, baptizing, bidding, passing a sentence, and excommunicating. Example: You are fired! By saying that someone is fired, an employer causes or brings about the person’s unemployment, thus changing his external situation.
Having uttered the word-declaration, the effect irretrievably (immortally) caused is such that that which now exists can forevermore not non-exist. At its instantiation, the rational soul is made immortal in an analogous way that when I fired you, you can never more be un-fired.

I understand that you believe in immortality of the rational soul because God sustain it forever. I am wondering what is the point of Aquinas about immortality of the rational soul when he argues the rational soul is immortal because it is immaterial.

Nothing can be e.g., granted Immortality by God
and then somehow lose immortality from God
  • at the same time.
IT IS TO THOSE
**who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality,
the GOD will Give Eternal Life.

We INFER - And as we know - God would never go back on that His WORD…
