How did Jesus suffer a greatest shoulder injury if He only carried the cross beam?

There are many threads debating this topic, and the historical evidence has lead me to believe that Jesus carried only the cross beam of His cross.
Wood was not very easy to come across back then.

An entire cross that could support Him would have been around 340 pounds.

He was just recently flogged and tortured.

Could He have still gotten the injury from only the beam?

He may have carried the whole cross or the beam with the arms tied wrapped to it. The cross was unusually heavy that is why he fell several times carrying it.

He also fell three times on his way there. In the movie “The Passion of Christ” (assuming this also happened to him), his shoulder was dislocated as they tried to nail his hands to the cross. If He had lashes on it, fell on it, and had it dislocated, I imagine that would be agonizing.

Did Jesus carry the entire cross or just the cross-beam of the cross? Apologetics
Hey everyone. Did Jesus carry the entire cross (which would have been incredibly heavy) or did He only carry the cross-beam (horizontal part)?
Check out this thread.

They’re not discussing the same question there.

I meant in the desert area of Judea
Even so. It isn’t all desert. There were more trees back then and even today looking at the pictures there are trees here and there and plenty of orchards. It is not the Sahara.

I’m not trying to make this thread into an argument.

I’m just trying to see if it would be possible for the shoulder injury with the straight beam.

I’ve heard of His greatest injury being his shoulder, but I’ve never heard that it was due solely because of the cross. Where did you hear that from?

If He carried it like this, He could have easily injured His shoulder.

Thousands of Jews would get together for the Feast of Tabernacles and many used wood for their temporary walled structures.

I can’t remember, somewhere on here.

Might have been from one of St Padre Pio’s revelations.

Maybe from the annals of St Bernard where he says Christ told him ‘I had on my shoulder while I bore My cross on the Way of Sorrows a grievous wound which was more painful than the others which is not recorded by men.’

Right, though that doesn’t necessarily mean that it was due to the cross, but that it was during His walk to Calvary.

If I recall correctly, the idea of his shoulder injury, which he suffered from the most, came from a private revelation, not from the Bible.
However, I presumed that if he did in fact suffer the most from a shoulder injury, that this came from the severe beating he got beforehand, before he went on the road of the cross. I presumed that this special injury, if there was one, came from an open wound, not from a dislocation.

Logically speaking it makes no difference. Either way it could cause injury and pain. The wood of the cross was heavy, those who have experience in lumbering would know that such wood can be very heavy, and more so Jesus had just undergone torture, injured and in pain.

The weight of the wood was on his shoulder. The fact that he had accidents - he fell while carrying the cross, must have caused an added injury to him, whether it was the shoulder or other parts of the body. The pain on the shoulder was greater than the nail pierced hands and feet, probably by that point in time any additional inflicted pain would not make any difference as he was too tired and full of suffering.

Anyway, we do not know the pain on the shoulder as it was not explicitly narrated in the Gospels. We know that from a private revelation of the Saint (Fr. Pio).

Edit: Of course other saints as well (Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, St. Gertrude or St. Mechtilde).

I guess you’re right that it makes no difference.
Ya. The point (by saying the pain on the shoulder) was perhaps more from the theological aspect. Jesus was carrying the burden of our sins on his shoulder. So such inspiration is not surprising that it should be revealed to our holy saints who were close to the heart of the Father God, just to affirm how much Jesus suffered for us due to our sins.

It’s also possible that any shoulder injury could have also been started from the scourging. If The Passion of the Christ movie is accurate, he could have had muscle ripped off his shoulder during the scourging which would have caused the carrying of the cross (even if just the crossbeam) to become torture.

However, let’s also not remember He was carrying the weight of all the sins of the world.

Oh my Jesus, forgive us our sins. Save us from the fires of hell, especially those in most need of thy Mercy.
Amen.
