Just wondering how and why people chose their username.

Mine simply means ‘Polish guy’ and a Polish woman would be ‘Polka’. I understand Polack (usually with a ‘c’) is also a derogatory term for a Polish person in some places. I have had a couple of users tell me they thought my name was offensive. I explained it to them and they understood (well, one of them did).

How about you?

Is there a specific reason that you chose the username you have or did you just think up a name for the forum and it has no real meaning or connection with yourself?

In the valleys of South Wales, ‘Niblo’ is a dialect (Wenglish) word applied to the youngest male child in the family. My true name is Paul, but my Mam would say, for example: ‘You do keep an eye out on Niblo while I do pop to the shops. I’ll be back in a minute now!’

I’ve a niece who is expecting - shortly - a male child. My question to her: ‘How’s Niblo doing?’

Mine came from back in the day when I was still working on construction jobs. I had just met a laborer whose first language was Spanish and who hadn’t yet mastered English. He asked me my name and I told him Christopher. He looked puzzled, probably since my name is Cristobal in Spanish. Then he smiled as though he’d had a revelation and pointed up to Heaven, saying, “Oh! Cristo first!” Anyway, I thought that was clever, so I used it for my username when I signed up for CAF.

I used to go by my initials (@tee_eff_em) but when the forum went Discourse and so much history was lost, I thought I’d change up.

I sometimes get asked (with all manner of implication, I’m sure) “Why a demon’s name?”

My answer (in Roger Rabbit voice) is: “Because it’s a F-f-f-f-f-Funny demon name” 😜

(You can google for yourself about the demon Titivillus)

I signed up for a MMORPG called Runescape under the name dracula_16. After a few years, I got tired of the connotation that the word ‘dracula’ has. I don’t drink blood, I don’t hate garlic and I don’t hate crosses. Vampires fascinated me, so that’s why used it on Runescape. I got tired of it, though, so I started going by a shortened version, drac16. That’s where drac came from, but the 16 came from me having been born on the 16th of November.

It is my name. I am the sixth ruler of Umberia who is named Quasitenebrous.

When signing my letters, I add “Penultimus” because I am blessed with the fore-knowledge that I am the second-to-last ruler of the Realm. After me, my son Omne-Tenebrous will reign. After him the kingdom will dissolve into the time when shadows will be no more.

~ Quasitenebrous VI, Penultimus

Several names (and icon/avatar images) are explained in the thread linked below. I include it in case users who posted there don’t wish to re-post here.

Chance to share story behind your CAF user name and profile picture Casual Discussion
I noticed a lot of people on CAF have intriguing and creative user names and/or profile pictures. If it’s not too personal and you would like to share the story behind your choices, I would be interested in hearing and learning something from it. I bet others would, too. I apologize if this topic has been done before.

Mine is my nickname plus a random number. I originally tried ‘123’ at the end but it had already been taken so I went with ‘999’.

My user picture is of a boy praying at his bedside with his trusty dog next to him who is following the boy’s lead.

I chose this because I like to think of myself as a child at heart, I love God, and I am a pet owner who likes dogs.

Note: My two dogs have helped my wife and I endure the pandemic with our sanity intact.

I absolutely love the gently undulating green paddocks this time of year ,a sea of green…and miss the gentle shades when Summer comes …then, all monotones, dust and dead grass .

One of the odd tidbits I’ve picked up over the years (I’m sure that everyone is surprised I know something odd ) is that only female mosquitoes bite and draw blood.

Now, leaving aside whether they should be veiled or cover their ankles when so doing, some Eastern thinking uses blood as the distinction of whether something is an animal for fasting purposes. Leading, of course, to the conclusion that you can eat male, but not female, mosquitoes during lent . . .

My username is Spanish meaning ‘of God.’ My wife and I have a small place in Spain and, although I don’t speak the language (she speaks a little) I have managed to pick up the odd word or two during our stays there.

I hear you. I get this in the summer when I’m in Poland. It drives me mad. I quickly get up and turn the light on when I hear buzzing and can’t see a mosquito anywhere. Thankfully most of the rest of the year in the UK I don’t have this issue.

I am now Southern Baptist and have been for over 45 years, but I sometimes look back with nostalgia on my RCC childhood.
