My middle name is John (ioannes) and my confirmation name is Pio (pius). Hemce, John-Pio, but in Latin.

It’s a long time since we had a really bad mosquito year here. They don’t really bother me much compared to the rest of the family. I put it down to taking garlic capsules daily. If I break a sweat I can usually count on very few even landing on my skin. 🙂

What blood type do you have @CelticWarlord? That’s one factor that could make someone more or less attractive to mosquitoes. I copied the following from a Bing search:

The type A blood group is the least attractive to mosquitoes and type O blood will be the most attractive . While type B blood groups fall in the middle, but they do get bitten by females about 50% of the amount type O-blood people would. Type AB-blood is slightly more attractive to mosquitoes than type A blood.

I don’t know because I’m A+ and mosquitoes don’t seem to pass up a meal on me. Other factors are increased sweat either due to exercise or to high environmental temperature; alcohol consumption, increased body chemicals like lactic acid, ammonia and CO2 or a high heart rate. Fascinating facts but how do you conduct a study like that? I wouldn’t volunteer. Mosquitoes in AK would attack in swarms once the weather got warm enough. Oh BTW to get back to the OP, I became an RN in 1969 my dream job. Longer version of why I posted on a previous thread about what does your username mean.

I’m A-Positive, and mosquitoes light me afire. They swarm here, too. I can look down at my arm after a bite and see too many for me to count. At least I have the satisfaction of seeing several perish with one swipe of my hand! I carry an anti-itch preparation with me all the time. Ice also helps.

I’m deaf, but have had cochlear implants recently. A whole new world of bird and insect sounds has been opened to me, but I cannot yet hear a mosquito (although I could, until 56 years ago, when I was 23). Lol! I thought that this “new” black & white Tiger Asian Mosquito possibly doesn’t buzz. Wrong again! I’ve not seen the plain old mosquitoes that we had for decades in a few years now.

We used to find Avon Skin So Soft (an oil? I forget) an effective deterrent for mosquitoes and sweat bees. We even rubbed our dogs’ coats with it.

Although I’ve lived in 6 states, I’ve spent most of my adult years in Indiana and Kentucky. Since my name begins with an “M,” I tried “Minky,” but that was taken. Someone I loved used to call me “Minx,” but that was also taken. “Minks” was the first name that I tried that would activate.

Mosquitoes seem to dislike me. My wife and I will be outside and she will get eaten alive. I will not get a single bite. Or stick, as the case may be…

Actually, I’ve never known what my blood type is. I was told it appears on the birth certificate but that is not the case. I’ve never received a transfusion or donated blood so have never had the need to find out. I’ve never felt any concern over it anyway. Just one of those mysteries I enjoy. 🙂

I am O-Negative so people of my blood type are considered “universal donors” whose blood can be donated to anyone, or so I’m told.

You may want to find out your type if for no other reason than to know from whom you could receive blood in a pinch and to whom you could donate blood in an emergency.

Otherwise, a potentially critical transfusion might need to wait until they find out.

Either that or hopefully they have an ample supply of O-Negative blood on hand if a moment of need arises.

Avon skin so soft! Now that does bring back memories. Yes it was a bath oil. You could get it in a bottle for use in the bath but Avon also sold it in foil packets (like Off has with cloth inside). It was so effective against mosquitoes when some new Army family arrived in AK that was often given as a welcoming gift. We lived in Ft Wainwright from 1974 - 1978 during the pipeline building years. I am now living below the gnat line in the South. Bugs a plenty here too!
Cochlear implants are amazing. We had two patients in our physician’s practice blessed to receive them. I wonder if the high pitched frequency of the mosquitoes buzzing has anything to do with why it isn’t audible to you. LOL! I could hear a lot clearer back when I was 23 also Minks! Good Lord willing, I will be 72 this month so I’m not that far behind you.
The word minx indicates someone who is strong and bold. Merriam-Webster noted it was first used in 1576 but its origins are unknown. I tend to go off on tangets and explore topics or words that are brought up on CAF that I’d like to learn more about. Inquiring minds at al.

Aside: My father always said that, according to the codes on his army dog tags, he was “either a Catholic with type A blood or an Atheist with type C blood”
