How did you find out you or your child needs glasses?

We got glasses for my daughter at age 5 when she couldn’t see the movie we were watching from the top of our bed and kept going closer and closer. My husband then turned on the captions and got her close to the tv and had her step back until she couldn’t see the letters. It didn’t take long. She’s now 8 and has had 7 perscriptions, each getting worse. And we found pink frames with a hint of sparkle at EyeMasters.

My husband was 13 and couldn’t see the board.

I was 27 and made a comment to my husband about words always being kind of fuzzy when you read, like that was normal. Turns out letters aren’t all fuzzy in books and I am far-sighted.

Honestly I couldn’t tell at all. I got glasses at the very end of 10th grade. It has been 10 years, and I can still do a lot with out glasses. I have the best eyes out of my family.

Ok guys…drum roll…

My daughter needs glasses! 😦

It turns out that she does have issues with reading…my husband took her, so I didn’t get all the details, but I have a prescription…

So question:

What do I look for in glasses??? I’ve never had to wear glasses!!! HELP!

Awww… it’s ok, but I know how you feel. I’ve been wearing them since I was four. I don’t really remember life without glasses.

I think kids’ glasses are a lot nicer than they used to be when I was a kid. We had these large-rimmed, plastic frames, which my mom got because they held up better with regular kid play. Some eye doctors carry their own frames and then there are also stores like Pearl Vision and Lens Crafters. (Although I’m not sure if they are in Canada or if there is a different protocol for doctors’ offices.) The people there can help you find a pair that fits well for your daughter and answer your questions. Good luck!

There are many stores that other a two for one deal, which would be ideal for children, as kids are kids. I feel that the quality could be better though.
It has been my experience that those involved with the eye care/glasses industry are very helpful and friendly. Plastic lenses are the norm, but scratch easily, again your eye care professional will tell you all you need to know.

I think a really basic vision test is pretty standard in yearly checkups for kids. My doctor still does them when I go in for a physical. Schools also do screening each year.

I was in 4th grade and the eye doctor said I needed glasses. So I got them.

Good story, huh? 🤓

I love astronomy, I’ve always had a telescope growing up to the present. Anyways, one day I was looking at the moons, yes, moons. So, I went to an optomologist, and wala I wear glasses. I see one moon again.

I found out I needed glasses when I was in about 5th or 6th grade through the annual health tests at school.

My advice is to make sure they fit correctly or she might not wear them consistently, which might mean she will take them off and forget where she left them. I think the bows on my first pair were too short. They rubbed on my ears, made them sore and I hated wearing my glasses and only did so when absolutely necessary. As soon as I could wear contacts I switched and only used glasses as a back-up and to give my eyes a break from contacts. Most glasses, even sunglasses, are uncomfortable on my nose and can give me a headache. That is until recently. I found a pair of frames I love. They are pretty and fit comfortably and I just happened to be due for an eye exam. Amazingly I prefer wearing my glasses to contacts.

Probably should have got them with bi-focals though.

Thanks. We did just that. They fit her like a glove and she loved them BC they are pink with hearts. They are a metal light frame and we got two pairs. One in pink and one in purple.

With this in mind, I will double check the fit.

Thanks
