How did you first learn about the birds and the bees?

Observation and hands on experience.

We have a bird feeder and I am a beekeeper. 😃

Other than that, picking up ā€œthingsā€ at school and hearing the whole truth from my mom.

This isn’t so obvious for all children of farmers.

We kept a bull around once for just a very short time and I can’t recall any action. Our cows were artifically inseminated. I perceived more danger from the tank filled with liquid nitrogen in the back room than the bull in the pasture.
Oh it’s very high tech now but when I was a kid it was the old fashioned way. We had lots of sheep and let’s say poor Mr Buck had his work cut out for him during breeding season. As for the cattle and horses, we took them to the stud/bull and had them bred, then took them home. IOW I did learn the basic mechanics that way.

Are the replies on this thread an argument for the public schools to take control of sex education?

I am an other. I learned by watching dogs and by being given novels and by watching sex in movies. My parents did not discuss the topic. It was understood that I would read the novels to learn. I’d say the dogs were the least traumatic.

In 5th grade in Catholic school (60s) the boys were whisked out of the room so that the girls could be given a talk on their soon to be changing bodies. The boys had no clue what was going on so, of course, were extra interested. There’s nothing more enthralling than a good mystery. :hmmm: One boy grabbed one of the pamphlets to be handed out at which time the teacher quickly took it from him & shooed him out with the other boys. I remember him saying, ā€œI don’t know what the big deal is; I just saw a picture of a longhornā€.

The birds & the bees details I found out from the babysitter.

I asked my mother ā€œWhat are the facts of life?ā€

And her response (I am REALLY not kidding you):

ā€œIt is a television show. Now, go back and play with your sisters.ā€

This was around 1980/1981.

:clapping: Cheers to my mom for creativity!

I had to learn on my own.
The Health Teacher in the Catholic High School, could only teach ā€˜so much’. The stuff I wanted to know, wasn’t taught to me.

If I had had proper education, I probably wouldn’t have gotten into the lifestyle that I did.

My mother. She taught us everything very openly and honestly and emphasized purity & chastity.

I remember hearing stuff at school, and not believing it (my parents *never *did that!). In 6th grade my mom gave me James Dobson’s book Preparing for Adolescence and told me to read it and let her know if I had any questions. I’m glad she did it that way, because I would have been truly horrified to hear the truth directly from her.

My mom told me everything when I was seven and my sister, who was nine, had just got her first period. Personally I think I was rather young, because when I say she told us everything, I do mean everything!

My mother never really told me how the act is done, just that the male fertilized the eggs in the female…That and then having pets such as guinea pigs and birds… :o I pretty much peiced the rest together myself…

When I was a kid, one of the most popular family shows was ā€œI Love Lucyā€ with Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, who were husband and wife in real life (at the time). When Lucy got pregnant (in real life and on the show), my mother had to explain things to me! She got such a kick out of that, she kept reminding me for the next 50 years! :o

A combination of the Grollier Encyclopedia’s chart of fetal gestation, and my mother. It didn’t make sense until they put it together in school (Sister Agnita). Mom put a prohibition on talking about it because the other kids were too young. Needless to say, I almost immediately told the sister directly under me in age.
