HiNo - these ones…Christians:
1 Peter 5:13
Colossians 3:12
Romans 8:28-33
Craig,Get it through your head Rakowski…the elect will NOT perish
I’m sorry but I read tirades like this (again) and I have to sit here and wonder just who it is that you are trying to convince?I do not hear you, Mr. Militant…
Jeremiah 32:40
What does it say??? THEY SHALL NOT DEPART!!! How does God do this???
How is one saved…by the Spirit - by the Word…
1 Peter 1:23
James 1:18
The Word is God-breathed through the Spirit and just as Adam received life when God breathed into Him, the same for the Christian…
2 Timothy 3:16
And God also uses His Spirit and the word to save the elect…that INCLUDES warnings. The elect WILL follow the warnings.
Mikeledes has indicated that the CC indeed teaches that the elect will be infallibly saved…BUT…He has also indicated that a non-elect person can be saved/justified but then WILL lose their salvation. This cannot be proven in scripture. There is only such thing as the elect group of Christians…all others will be rooted up…
Matthew 15:13
By the way - I TOLD YOU SO…
ONCE SAVED ALWAYS SAVED!!! THE ELECT ARE SAVED FOREVER!!!
Clavin has no issue with Matthew 19:17, it(like all of Scripture) testifies of the truth. That’s precisely why I think Matthew 19:17 is so devastating to Calvinism, on two fronts:
.
- Christ urges the young man to “keep the commandments”, not “believe in me” nor some other reformulation of “keep the faith”.
- If the young man were of the Elect, Christ’s advice to him was unnecessary (if not injurious, given Luther’s views—sin boldly, etc); if he was not of the Elect, Christ lied to him since nothing he could do would ever procure salvation for him.
Acts 27 is a wonderful example of divine providence. The warning never realized because they heeded the warning. However, we cannot compare apples with oranges. The fact that a warning was not realized in this case does not mean a warning is never realized:If a warning is designed to be meaningless - you have a problem. We have been through this before.
Look in Acts 27
A group of people including Paul are on a ship and in trouble…Here is what Paul says has been God’s decree…
Acts 27:21-25 KJV 21 But after long abstinence Paul stood forth in the midst of them, and said, Sirs, ye should have hearkened unto me, and not have loosed from Crete, and to have gained this harm and loss. 22 And now I exhort you to be of good cheer: for there shall be no loss of any man’s life among you, but of the ship. 23 For there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve, 24 Saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must be brought before Caesar: and, lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee. 25 Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me.
That is like the decree in 1 John 5:4 - You will be saved - I promise you…God is sovereign and has predestined this to occur. So, does that mean everyone just sits back and lets God do everything?? No, look what then happens…
Acts 27:30-31 KJV 30 And as the shipmen were about to flee out of the ship, when they had let down the boat into the sea, under colour as though they would have cast anchors out of the foreship, 31 Paul said to the centurion and to the soldiers, Except these abide in the ship, ye cannot be saved.
God’s sovereignty and man’s responsibility working together - and God ordains both…predestines both. At this point you could also consider the prophecies of God…look how all of the circumstances worked together for Mary and Joseph to return to Bethlehem. It seems God works it out without us feeling as though our free will is violated. For the Christian though, I long for my will to be aligned with His will.
**God’s will was going to be done - PERIOD **- WITH THE WARNING BEING NECESSARY. Not that his sovereign will would not come to pass…but to make it sure. THIS IS THE DESIGN OF THESE SCRIPTURES THAT YOU SO LOVE.
Get it through your head Rakowski…the elect will NOT perish
It cannot be proven from Scripture? I have presented numerous verses that contradict the Calvinist notion of the perseverance of the saints. I have written a whole series of posts in another thread and they have gone unanswered. I hope you and any other Calvinist will take the time to prayerfully read them.Mikeledes has indicated that the CC indeed teaches that the elect will be infallibly saved…BUT…He has also indicated that a non-elect person can be saved/justified but then WILL lose their salvation. This cannot be proven in scripture. There is only such thing as the elect group of Christians…all others will be rooted up…
I reaffirm what I said in this post.Perseverance is both a condition of salvation and a evidence of election. The Bible clearly states:
Matthew 10:22
But he who endures to the end will be saved.
Notice that it does not say that he who endures to the end has been saved (i.e. past tense). It says he who endures to the end will be saved (i.e. future tense). There are other verses that talk about the necessity of perseverance:
Revelation 2:10
Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.
2 Timothy 2:12
12 If we endure,
We shall also reign with Him.
If we deny Him,
He also will deny us.
That last part of the verse reiterates what is found in Matthew 10:32
32 “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. 33 But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.
Perseverance, however, does not mean perseverance in faith alone. It means perseverance in faith and love and the visible expression of this is righteous conduct:
Revelation 2:26
26 And he who overcomes, and keeps My works until the end, to him I will give power over the nations—
Romans 2:6-7
**6who WILL RENDER TO EACH PERSON ACCORDING TO HIS DEEDS:
7to those who by perseverance in doing good **seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life;
Galatians 6:7-9
7Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap.
8For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.
9Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary.
Only those who do not grow weary (i.e. persevere) in having faith and love that expresses itself in righteous conduct (i.e. doing good) will be glorified, the full realization of that eternal life promised by God. That is why Jesus Himself said:
John 5:28-29
28"Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice,
29and will come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment.
The difference between the works of the Law of Moses and the works of Law of Christ is that the latter are rooted in a faith that works through love. Those who tried to be justified by the Mosaic Law placed their trust in their observance of the mere precepts of the law. In other words, the external. Those who observe the Law of Christ have placed their trust in God’s mercy and, in turn, carry out His commands. However, only those who persevere in a faith working through love that results in a righteous life will be glorified. Those who persevere to the end are predestined to glory. Those who fail to persevere and thus fall from grace were genuinely justified, but were not predestined to glory.
God Bless,
Michael
Ah…an old heresy, resurrected and propped up.I want to return to the OP and look at it from a different angle.
Our salvation is in Christ, not in ourselves. Our election is also in Him, not in us. The elect are the elect gratuiously: nothing they did, nothing they are, nothing they will do causes them to to elect. It is all a matter of God’s choice as to who He decides will persevere to the end, who will see the door open into heaven and pass through it. It is not in us.
Can you provide some sources for this. I would be very interested in reading more about this. I’ve heard about it before.Calvin, by the way, acknowledged that the non-elect can have the grace of God operating in their lives, can have false security, can go for a while as Christian and fall away. He contrasts these people with the elect who, by definition, will persevere to the end.
You’re right! Not all of the Covenant People were of the Elect. However, the passages I quoted are not about the Covenant people per se. They are about the righteous and the wicked within the Covenant people. The righteous of the Old and the New Covenants became righteous the same way. Just read Hebrews 11. Hence, if perseverance of the saints applies to the New Testament saints, then it should also apply to the Old Testament saints.Mike,
Those scriptures you mentioned refer to Covenant people of God. Covenant people are not always Elect, like those who fell in the wilderness or the unfertile ground mentioned in the parable of the sower.
John 10:28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
John 10:29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.
No one can pluck/snatch anyone out of God’s hands. To “snatch” usually means to catch by surprise and to use force. God is absolutely sovereign. He is the one who determines who will remain and who will not remain in Christ:John 10:28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
John 10:29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.
That is hardly true, my friend. Did Jesus ever shout? When did he??Linkowski, we hear you! Don’t worry, we aren’t deaf. You don’t need to shout! It’s not that we don’t hear but that we don’t agree.
You aren’t going to make us agree in OSAS by shouting but by reasoning (which will thus probably never happen).
In Christ,
~G
When he fashioned a scourge and chased the moneylenders out of the Temple. That is hardly true, my friend. Did Jesus ever shout? When did he??
Because you choose to be.How Do I Know I am One of The Elect?
Talk to Him about this type of approach. I am not applying this text to you but only using it as an example. Hard heads require sharper instruments used with higher power.Craig,
You will not win any friends or influence people by taking this nasty line of defense. Remember what scripture says about the value of charity, and giving a reason for the hope you have, with gentleness and respect.
I never said the elect will perish (and I have no idea where you got that from what I wrote). But, since we both agree on this point, for whom did God issue these warnings? If his will is going to come to pass regardless of warnings, why issue them at all?
