Create a pure heart for me, O God, and renew in me a steadfast spirit. (Psalm 50:12)

How do I love the Holy One for himself alone and no other reason?

So far I have loved God for what he does for me and others. I have not loved him for himself alone.

Some advice that you actually follow please.

Rather than thanking God, or loving him for His gifts, decide in your heart to love Him as the Giver of gifts. Love Him even should He take those gifts away. Perhaps before Christ in the Blessed Sacrament, ponder God’s inherent awesomeness in His eternal omnipotence.

po18guy,
how do these practices work for you? Any success?

I consider eyesight, digestive system, rational ability, limbs etc as well as material objects to be possessions.

How do I align my will with his will of perfect love? Loving him just for himself.

Could you choose to love him because he longs to be loved? Tell him you love him because you know he loves it when his children trust in him and come to him for mercy and to just be with him. Try reflecting on the story of the prodigal son and the father’s reaction to his son’s home coming.

OK Jennifer,
This reads to be a good approach. I’ll sit more in his presence loving and meditating.

I am aware that I could not love God, if His love for me did not caused me to love Him. I know that I can make mistakes, but in any case may His Holy Will always be done. I know that He is God and can only will what is best for us even if we do not understand. All my troubles cause me to kneel before Him, only to realize that it was the real purpose of the trouble, to approach Him and know that He is my real need and not just to answer the troubles, which He does anyway in His own time I must learn to trust Him more, to trust Him is to love Him. His graces purify our love, and intensify our relationship with Him We must never give Him up for anything, no matter the suffering, or hurt, to remain faithful to Him. Also to love God, I must love my neighbor, my love for God causes me to love my neighbor, and is doing His Holy Will I am 84 and I know if it wasn’t for His love for me, and giving me His graces, I could not have made it, I had many occasions to doubt Him, but His strength saw me through my troubles, and tests of fidelity.
