Well, there is always the option of heading to the nearest city once or twice a weekend and joining organized groups/activities. If you only go a couple times a week it shouldn’t be too hard on the wallet and well worth in in terms of overcoming social awkwardness, making new friends, and meeting women. Thanks for the advice. It was good, though I do have some obstacles. One thing that is especially lacking is that in my area there isn’t much in the way of groups to join. I live in a fairly small town and the closest large cities are an hour away. For the most part their aren’t young single people my age. Usually they are married and have kids running around and just do stuff with the older adults. However, I’m sure I can find something. It’s just hard because anymore it seems like a lot of people are so self centered these days and never move beyond themselves or their tiny group of friends. I mean in my grandparents day and even with my parents it. sounds like people were more open and friendly. Now it seems like most people are either just unkind or if its my generation, they are on their phones and hanging with one or two people rather than being open to meeting new people. Sadly I’m a victim of this too except I don’t have a lot of friends.
Cultivate friendships with women. We tend to be nurturers and more welcoming of someone who is shy or awkward. On top of that, even if you aren’t romantically interested in any of your woman friends they will have other women friends that you just might be interested in.
Since you are in a small town of mostly older and/or married people you might want to consider the internet. You don’t have to go to dating sites if you don’t want to. I have a few friends who met and married online playing games. They got to chatting with the regulars and it went from there. I met and remained friends with people who played World of Warcraft with me years ago when I was a daily player. I’ve also met and befriended people on my dog forums because we have the bond of a common real life interest. We keep in touch through phone calls, Facebook, and occasional visits. It’s easier to be yourself and let your personality shine through online. If you develop a close friendship or romantic interest and decide to meet in real life you already know the person and will likely feel more comfortable around them. Just keep a look out for the kooks, lol.
I know its totally cliche that you find who you’re looking for when you aren’t looking, but that happened for me. I actually was in a bad place mentally and didn’t want to go out. My friend thought my idea of sweat pants, scary movies, and ice cream was a bad one and pushed me into going to our hangout spot. Just when I was about to make him take me home after a miserable night watching other people dance, I looked up and saw my friend chatting with the most mesmerizing man I have ever seen. I asked my friend to introduce us and now we’ve been together for 14 years, married for 11.
So, yeah, don’t make looking for “the one” your mission to the exclusion of all else. It will drive you batty and if it takes years to find her you’ll feel frustrated and hopeless. Get out there, get better at social interaction, meet people, pursue interests with groups, and live your life. Just keep an eye out in case she walks by or happens to be talking to someone you know.
