How do I overcome poor social skills if i'm called to marriage?

Thanks for the advice. It was good, though I do have some obstacles. One thing that is especially lacking is that in my area there isn’t much in the way of groups to join. I live in a fairly small town and the closest large cities are an hour away. For the most part their aren’t young single people my age. Usually they are married and have kids running around and just do stuff with the older adults. However, I’m sure I can find something. It’s just hard because anymore it seems like a lot of people are so self centered these days and never move beyond themselves or their tiny group of friends. I mean in my grandparents day and even with my parents it. sounds like people were more open and friendly. Now it seems like most people are either just unkind or if its my generation, they are on their phones and hanging with one or two people rather than being open to meeting new people. Sadly I’m a victim of this too except I don’t have a lot of friends.
Well, there is always the option of heading to the nearest city once or twice a weekend and joining organized groups/activities. If you only go a couple times a week it shouldn’t be too hard on the wallet and well worth in in terms of overcoming social awkwardness, making new friends, and meeting women.

Cultivate friendships with women. We tend to be nurturers and more welcoming of someone who is shy or awkward. On top of that, even if you aren’t romantically interested in any of your woman friends they will have other women friends that you just might be interested in.

Since you are in a small town of mostly older and/or married people you might want to consider the internet. You don’t have to go to dating sites if you don’t want to. I have a few friends who met and married online playing games. They got to chatting with the regulars and it went from there. I met and remained friends with people who played World of Warcraft with me years ago when I was a daily player. I’ve also met and befriended people on my dog forums because we have the bond of a common real life interest. We keep in touch through phone calls, Facebook, and occasional visits. It’s easier to be yourself and let your personality shine through online. If you develop a close friendship or romantic interest and decide to meet in real life you already know the person and will likely feel more comfortable around them. Just keep a look out for the kooks, lol.

I know its totally cliche that you find who you’re looking for when you aren’t looking, but that happened for me. I actually was in a bad place mentally and didn’t want to go out. My friend thought my idea of sweat pants, scary movies, and ice cream was a bad one and pushed me into going to our hangout spot. Just when I was about to make him take me home after a miserable night watching other people dance, I looked up and saw my friend chatting with the most mesmerizing man I have ever seen. I asked my friend to introduce us and now we’ve been together for 14 years, married for 11.

So, yeah, don’t make looking for “the one” your mission to the exclusion of all else. It will drive you batty and if it takes years to find her you’ll feel frustrated and hopeless. Get out there, get better at social interaction, meet people, pursue interests with groups, and live your life. Just keep an eye out in case she walks by or happens to be talking to someone you know.

Uggh, you had to mention this:roll eyes: I’m sorry, i know this is true, but i hate when people say things like “it will happen when you stop looking.” I’m a single guy, how am I not supposed to look? Don’t get me wrong I’m not in love with every girl I see or something like that, but how is this supposed to happen? There are a few women i’d love to be with and a few who i know it wouldn’t work out, but still, it feels like I don’t even know how to start. It’s like trying to fish, but i don’t have a pole or even arms to go noodling. Like I said, very rarely does God just put a spouse in our lap, or anything for that matter.
After reading the above post I have some more thoughts. Are you as err candid in person as you are here? If you are your personality may be a bit off putting. A better thing to do would be to ignore the advice (given in charity BTW) rather than being rude. Perhaps if you have someone like Hobbes in your small circle of friends you could share with him how irritating it is to hear that. As it happens, I know for certain that the Lord sometimes drops someone into your lap so to speak. That is how I met my husband. I used to do the party scene in the beach cities of Southern California. I got so tired of going to parties that I just decided to skip one but a friend of mine asked me to go with her because she didn’t want to go alone so as a favor to a friend I did that little thing. I thought oh how boring this is going to be. I will either meet a man or I would not. We would either go out on a date or not and it didn’t matter to me which; as I said I was tired of the whole scene. Lo and behold I met a man that I would share my life with going on 45 years now. He is a Catholic too BTW.

I wouldn’t say i’m terribly off putting. I’ll admit that at times I lack prudence. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not like i’m blunt to the point of awkwardness. I’m usually pretty tactful. I wouldn’t say i’m rude offline though, or even online. I guess I was just a little annoyed because I hear that advice all the time and it sounds so silly to me. Maybe i’m the only guy who does think about this constantly though. It’s just so hard because i’ve never had a relationship and it doesn’t help when I see Catholic women who are single on this board and over 30 say there aren’t any good men left. I’m worried i’ll be one of those old creepers who are nice, but not husband material. It’s not a huge worry, but it bothers me because even people who wait to get married at least have experience in the sense of dates. I have a few but they’ve been from online sites. Only once did i ask a girl out in person

BTW what does err candid mean?

My friend thought my idea of sweat pants, scary movies, and ice cream was a bad one
If this was my friend…I would be wondering why we were “friends” at this point. This was clearly the correct option. 😃

That’s a very unhelpful response.

Candid essentially means honest, open, forthright, obvious, etc.

I’m going to guess “Err” is like sayng, “Er- is that what you mean?”. Just a sound like “Um”.

She was asking you if you tend to be so blunt in real life. (I think.)
Oh wow that was a massive brain fart. I know what candid means. I thought err candid meant something in another language. Wow:shrug:

BTW liked the let me google that for you, it made me laugh at my own silliness. And as i mentioned in an earlier post, yes i’m very candid.

Well, close

Definition of er: expressing hesitation: used to express hesitation, err means expressing lots of hesitation.

I know someone who is blunt to the extreme. This person is unable to attract the opposite gender even though she is very pretty, as a young adult she was beautiful.

Well i’m certainly not that blunt, but i do have a bit of crudeness. Part of it is I’ve grown up with an Autistic brother and while I don’t have it myself, i’m sure I have some traits of kids with Autism. I guess rather than blunt i’d say i’m more someone who is open about their feelings. I do know how to be polite. I’m just more open about things.

I think the whole “when you stop looking” cliche, while about as comforting as a bandaid over a shredded femoral artery, is useful in the area of introverts.

Speaking from experience of being an introvert and knowing others like myself (We huddle in the shadows where it’s quiet 😃 ) Introverts are more confident and comfortable when they’re not trying to find someone, and it is said women like the confidence…
I have a female friend who is very good looking, but is unfortunately an atheist. Since I value my faith more than anything on Earth, I considered her romantically unavailable to me… However, because I was under no pressure to date her, I could be confident and charming around her. This helped me gain confidence speaking to other women.

Another thing that helped was making life choices that are putting me on the path to self sufficiency. As a student, marriage wasn’t quite a viable option yet. Finding the perfect women would be very stressful, as I’d have to string her along for years until I were ready. Now that I am finishing up graduate school, dating is slightly less daunting…

Candid can be a good thing. You said you try to be tactful, which means you are aware of others feelings and try to be candid without hurting anyone. I think that is a fine trait! Bonus is that you can laugh at yourself. So, you have a sense of humor and don’t take yourself too seriously.

Again I see this as a plus! My husband is also a blunt/candid man and it is one of the things that I appreciate most about him. I spent a lot of time as a younger woman being thrown lines left and right by men attempting to separate me from my clothing. Being around a man who is not full of bull pucky was a wonderfully refreshing change.

I sincerely hope you aren’t trying to change or cover up who you are. When looking for a mate it is very important to be yourself. File down a few rough edges, if you wish. Acquire some polish. But don’t change you. Look for a woman capable of appreciating you.
If this was my friend…I would be wondering why we were “friends” at this point. This was clearly the correct option. 😃
My dear friend is a guy. A woman probably would have grabbed a spoon and joined me. Men lack appreciation for comfy clothes, ice cream, and wallowing in a funk on a Saturday night.

The whole ‘wallowing in a funk’ plan would be just fine with most of the guys I know. 😃

Not my guys! Lazing around in sweats and eating junk food is fine as long as there is a televised sports event or a video game console involved. If there is emotional upset, the cure all is to go out and be social even if you don’t like people at the moment.

brother in christ,

I have battled with the same conflict much of my life, and certainly through high school.
I can honestly say that I have been where you have been, however, God has been slowly showing me the true man that I am meant to be in life.
I will tell you this, you can overcome this and you will! Again, you can overcome this and you will.
Your post really hit me deep in the heart, because I know of the pain that you have deep inside of you. I have been there.
The first thing you need to do is STOP DOUBTING YOURSELF. your post was filled negativity everywhere, and all directed towards yourself. I can only imagine what the evil one has you thinking about yourself on a day to day basis. Actually, I can imagine, because I used to listen to those thoughts. They go a little like this “blank, all of these people think that you are weird” or “blank, you have no talent” or “blank, you are weak, fat, etc…”.
There are two different categories of thoughts that enter into our mind. Gods, and the evil ones. When you have these thoughts that you are no good, they are an attack on you!
You have to start out by rejecting these thoughts. Whenever, and let me repeat, whenever you have a negative thought. No matter if it is about yourself or someone else, you recognize that it is not yours. and Call out Jesus Christ by name to prevent these thoughts. Actually talk out loud and say “Jesus, I KNOW that these are not my thoughts, I want to be filled with you thoughts. Please take these away”.
The Second thing you need to do is to change your self image of yourself.
Currently, although you seem to have lots of confidence in many areas, like your faith, you seem to lack it with social skills. I want you to start verbally telling yourself day in and day out positive things about yourself… again outloud. You are proclaiming your positive future. You should use phrases like “I know that I can talk to woman”. “I am strong, confident, and courageous”. “I will not be nervous when I talk to people”. “I could care two shits about what someone thinks of me” “I know that my father in heaven loves me”.
When you are feeling weak, call upon our lords strength. WE ARE WEAK BEINGS, BUT WITH THE LORDS STRENGTH WE CAN ACCOMPLISH ANYTHING. We need to activate that strength. again, verbally say “Jesus, I activate your strength, please give me your strength” over and over again.
The Third thing that you need to do is some soul searching. I have read two books that have helped me out with this topic. The first is “wild at heat” by john eldredge. It is an amazing read and will unveal so much to yourself about yourself! Read this.
Secondly there is a book titled “no more mr. nice guy”. unlike “wild at heart”, it is no a religious read, but it is very good at overcoming the nice guy syndrome, which it seems like you might have.
Brother, there is hope! I want you to be confident, strong, masculine, and so much more.
If you are to regain your heart, you must fight for it.
Pray the saint joseph novena for at least 9 mornings straight. Fast if you can. Ask God for guidance!

You could be my twin in fact because I was like you yet much worse at your age regarding social skills.

I too had an infatuation with what I considered very attractive women that made me all but unable to communicate with them.

My advice to you is to do what you are doing as a good Catholic young man and to plead daily for God to open the door for you. He will do exactly that and you shouldn’t need worrying about your confidence level. Rather, I would work on you faith in trusting that He created us man and women for a reason and also share your desires with Him, such as “what a beautiful women you have created Lord”.

BTW, I’m 48, married with 3 girls and plenty of social skills. Interestingly, I have realized real social skills come from living the Gospel and learning to love our fellow man in spite of their shortcomings, just as God loves us. Paz.
👍

Anyway here is my question. How do I overcome poor social skills.
You need to practice. There’s really no other way.
but i’m afraid to approach when I don’t know them. I hate going randomly up to one person and just talking to them unless it’s a certain situation where you are supposed to meet people like a catholic group or for something at work.
Why do you think you would need to do that? I assume you mean just talking to someone randomly on the street or even the store (even in a friendly Midwestern state like NE) for the purpose of getting to know them?

I guess that happens every so often on TV, but in reality, I advise against this especially for beginners. There are certain situations where it’s more acceptable, like if you want to talk to someone on the bus or walk with someone at a college campus you are in class with.

The only exception is if you go to a place like that regularly and maybe talk to someone who works there on regular basis and build rapport with them. I’ve actually done that with women before.

But unless you’re Brad Pitt or Selena Gomez, you’re not going to be able to just pick up someone from the street. It’s too stressful and the chance of success is pretty much zero if you don’t know the person.
However at places like bars or clubs or even certain catholic events, I’m afraid to talk to people, especially girls because I don’t want to seem like some creep whose hitting on them or something.
First of all, people go to social events to be social. If you’re not being social, you tend to stand out more than you think.

Second, a woman suspecting (I don’t think most would say KNOW) you are hitting on you isn’t necessarily a bad thing----PROVIDED you aren’t dropping some cheezy dive bar pick-up line to get her into bed.

If you know how to romantically communicate (in the words of dating guru Marius Panzerella) with women—teasing, flirting, making her laugh, it may not matter that you are hitting on her.

It doesn’t promise a date, but you won’t have to worry about looking awkward or like a creep. 👍
However the problem is that i’m a starer. I’ll admit sometimes I stare.
Okay, this is something you MUST work on. If you stare a lot, women will notice. Why? A lot of men don’t get this, but deep down inside pretty much every woman has a basic instinctive fear that a bad guy is going to nab her, drag her into the woods, rape her and then murder her.

So if you sit around and stare, it will just make them uncomfortable. Women will not date men they are not comfortable with.

The other thing you need to avoid----don’t ever come up behind a woman on the street and surprise her.
I know it probably makes me a creep, but it wasn’t like I was thinking “oh she’s so hot” or typical stuff like that. It was more like
Oh, I believe that, but simply admitting that will pretty much never get you set up for a real relationship.

Women want men who they are attracted to and listening to you rattle off why you’re not a pig or a creep isn’t their idea of fun and a good time.
“how do I get an awesome girl like her to like a guy like me?” when I looked at her. What made it tough too was that I couldn’t just ask her out.
Well, I’ve been there before, too. But you need to control your feelings a little bit and not elevate the girl you like so high. It sets up this mentality that she’s too good for you, which probably isn’t the case.
Especially while working together. I felt it was more important to focus on our job at hand.
You probably don’t want to be asking a girl out unless you’ve had some real time to build up rapport.

You can in cases like these go for the long ball and hope she’ll agree to go out with you, but I don’t think it will work most of the time.

The best advice I have for a situation like that is to ask a girl if she wants to hang out. Don’t worry about classifying the event as a date.

Anyway , I later found out through a source that she found it hard to “love me as a person of god” and while she was nice enough to me in person, I can’t help but wonder if she and most other girls think of me as some awkward creep who’s only good thing is that he’s catholic.
It also makes me wonder if something is wrong with me or if i should even consider marriage as a vocation due to my lack of social skills.
In order to properly discern a vocation, you need the guidance of a spiritual director. My sense is that it will take much more than your view of your social skills. The priesthood and clergy life is not a safe-zone for those who don’t think they have the skills to date.
So how do I overcome my fears and anxieties? Obviously prayer is going to be the main answer, but I want more concrete advice. Don’t get me wrong, prayer works. But prayer alone doesn’t get you what you want. I can pray for a spouse constantly, but unless I get out there it isn’t going to happen. Typically God doesn’t put things in our lap (as nice as that would be).
:clapping: 👍

I think you’ve already taken some big steps with the on-line dating (just be smart about this) and with simply admitting that a good woman won’t just be put in front of you because you pray or because your Grandma, older sister or favorite aunt tell you “there’s someone out there for you!” in a way that means you can just sit and wait.

I can include you in my prayers that God will give you guidance, concrete direction in life and the graces you need to overcome your poor social skills. As I see it, you don’t really suffer from social anxiety disorder or social phobia because you are able to study for your master’s, able to meet and talk to religious groups and people at work. People who suffer from SAD avoid many social gatherings and situations. In many cases, a lot of sufferers are unable to work or hold a steady job/career, finish or go to school, and make friends. It is a very isolating, frustrating disorder because the sufferers do understand their irrational fears but can’t help themselves overcome it. It is, however, treatable…

In your case you might just lack the social skills you think you need to get the woman you desire. I don’t think you lack the resources to be able to practice social skills as you are surrounded with opportunities at work, school and church. Use and take that opportunity. Don’t be too critical of yourself. You can meet that woman if that is the life that God wants for you without even have to work so hard on searching for her.

Since you are increasing in confidence and holiness everyday, and you seem to be contemplating on the possibility of joining a religious life then I would suggest to visit a monastery for a contemplative prayer to discern or go somewhere to search for an answer. It is not really what we want but what God wants for us who knows what is best for us.

If God can split the Red Sea, can rain down manna from heaven for people to eat, can impregnate a virgin or an impregnable old woman, can make water gushed out from a rock, can raise dead people, can perform all kinds of miracles then why can’t He put a woman on your lap? 😃 Of course, He can in desperate situations.

I believe you are still young and you have all the time to discern. Good luck and God Bless!

.
Here is my issue though, girls don’t want to be hit on by guys who look like me. Don’t get me wrong i’m not ugly, but i’m short stocky and losing a little hair and while it doesn’t phase me, even the most devout Christian and Catholic women want to date good looking people (who happen to be devout as well). I guess I feel like that most women think ugly guys are creepy and just settle with more homely guys because they are still single at 30, or they have the best personality ever (which does happen, but i’m not exactly a person with a super personality, i’m nice and friendly and have interest, but i’m no mr. excitement)

I also feel weird talking to girls like this. I mean I feel like i’m just going after them for one thing, rather than getting to know them as a person. Also again I feel like a lot of times people don’t want to make new friends. Sure we have lots of friends and followers on Facebook or twitter, but it seems like most people are just content to have one or two good friends and don’t go outside of their circle. Especially women (not to stereotype, a lot of men are like this too, I just see it more in women.)
