How do I respond to this? (Sola Fide verses)

I’m just trying to figure out what the “Traditions” are. I’m not trying to be difficult.

For example, is not eating meat on Friday a “Tradition”? f you don’t obey that tradition, do you lose your salvation?

Is the Assumption of Mary a “Tradition”? If you don’t believe that, do you lose your salvation?
There was a story told once, can’t remember the details - maybe you can though. It was about, as you say, duty - and what was the least a man could do to fulfill his duties. The answer … was that you ought to do everything asked of you and then more. If your faith or Sacred Tradition from the Apostles asked you to carry a load for one mile - you should carry it for two miles.
So, if you don’t obey, do you loose your salvation?

Even Satan “believes” in Jesus Christ…It’s what you do with your belief of him that counts :twocents:

By the way there are over 150 verses in the NT that say that we are saved simply by putting our trust in the Lord Jesus Christ.
O.K. So then I can sit in the fast lane of the freeway and trust in the Lord? Can I have children with my wife by simply trusting in the Lord? No, it’s obvious that we must DO something here in cooperation with our trust in the Lord. Come on, quit cherry picking scripture and see the whole picture. Jesus had to **die **for our sins not just trust in His fathers mercy for humanity. Yes even Jesus DID something for us…Saving faith requires picking up your cross ( DOING SOMETHING) and FOLLOWING Jesus. Your argument is with Him not me if you think that belief is only the assent of the will towards salvation. Even “accepting Christ as your personal Lord and Savior” is something that you must DO.

I wonder if, when he was writing the second chapter of his book, James was familiar with the 150 verses where it says that we are saved by faith alone. Silly James. You’re like those Catholics always making things more difficult.😉

Hi, I am debating someone they used this to justify their beleif that only believing in Jesus Christ will be sufficient to go to heaven:

Romans 1:16-17, “I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the (AF)Jew first and also to (AG)the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “BUT THE RIGHTEOUS man SHALL LIVE BY FAITH.””

Romans 10:9-10, “If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.”

If I truly believe, I am declared righteous.

How can I respond to this?
Cut the two verses out of the bible. Paste them into a folded piece of leather or other binding.

When next you meet him, if he tries to tell you anything else about the bible, pull out your little “biblet” and say “Why are you adding to the gospel, this is all I need.”

No matter what he does or says keep persisting with “This is all I need, you told me so.” and explain you tossed out the rest of the scripture because it was just fluff and worthless additions to the gospel.

Sounds dumb, and it may take a while, but he will eventually get the idea that what he is teaching is a fallacy. Be persistent. Just remember, no matter what he says just say; “This is all need” even when he says something like “personal relationship with Jesus”, “need of the Holy Spirit” or * “You’ll want to do these other things”* be persistent, insisting that is an added gospel. And keep showing him the two verses.

John 5:24 NAS95 24 "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.

John 10:27-28 NAS95 27 "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; 28 and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand.

Romans 5:1-2 NAS95 1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God.

Acts 16:30-31 NAS95 30 and after he brought them out, he said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” 31 They said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”

1 Peter 1:23 NAS95 23 for you have been born again not of seed which is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and enduring word of God.

Romans 3:21-22 NAS95 21 But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22 even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no distinction;

Romans 4:1-8 NAS95 1 What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found? 2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. 3 For what does the Scripture say? “ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS CREDITED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS.” 4 Now to the one who works, his wage is not credited as a favor, but as what is due. 5 But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness, 6 just as David also speaks of the blessing on the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works: 7 "BLESSED ARE THOSE WHOSE LAWLESS DEEDS HAVE BEEN FORGIVEN, AND WHOSE SINS HAVE BEEN COVERED. 8 “BLESSED IS THE MAN WHOSE SIN THE LORD WILL NOT TAKE INTO ACCOUNT.”

Romans 8:1 NAS95 1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

Romans 8:33 NAS95 33 Who will bring a charge against God’s elect? God is the one who justifies;

Galatians 3:22 NAS95 22 But the Scripture has shut up everyone under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.

Galatians 3:26 NAS95 26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.

2 Timothy 3:15 NAS95 15 and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

FAITH IS THE ROOT AND IS NOT A PASSIVE FAITH BUT A FAITH THAT IS CHARACTERIZED BY:
  1. REPENTANCE FROM SIN TO TURN TO CHRIST AS LORD
  2. AN UNRESERVED TRUST IN CHRIST’S SACRIFICE ON THE CROSS AS THE PAYMENT FOR YOUR SIN APART FROM ANY WORKS, RITUALS, CEREMONIES, SACRAMENTS, ETC. THAT YOU MIGHT DO.
CATHOLICISM ADDS WORKS TO FAITH IN SAYING IN THE CCC THAT THEY ARE NECESSARY FOR SALVATION…KIND OF A GRACE FOR WORKS CONCEPT. BUT GRACE AND WORKS ARE AT ODDS WITH EACHOTHER…FOR IT CAN ONLY BE ONE OR THE OTHER…

Romans 11:6 NAS95 6 But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works, otherwise grace is no longer grace.

Heaven is completely and 100% undeserved by all persons for all have sinned.

IF YOU ARE BORN AGAIN…YOU ARE CHANGED JUST AS THE BLIND, DEAF, LAME, DEAD, MUTE…ETC…WERE WHEN THEY MET CHRIST…IT IS A MIRACLE!!!

2 Corinthians 5:17 NAS95 17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.

Salvation by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone…but faith that works by love…

Galatians 5:6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything, but faith working through love.

Ask ‘em if faith is all it takes then why did Our Lord bother with this whole discourse in Matthew 25?
31: "When the Son of man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne.
32: Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats,
33: and he will place the sheep at his right hand, but the goats at the left.
34: Then the King will say to those at his right hand, Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; 35: for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36: I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.' 37: Then the righteous will answer him, Lord, when did we see thee hungry and feed thee, or thirsty and give thee drink?
38: And when did we see thee a stranger and welcome thee, or naked and clothe thee?
39: And when did we see thee sick or in prison and visit thee?’
40: And the King will answer them, Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.' 41: Then he will say to those at his left hand, Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels;
42: for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink,
43: I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’
44: Then they also will answer, Lord, when did we see thee hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to thee?' 45: Then he will answer them, Truly, I say to you, as you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me.’
46: And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."

and then, if all it takes is “faith alone” why then does St. James write, (2:24) “You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone.” That’s the only place in the Bible that the words faith and alone occur together.

Yeah right  …Can faith that does not result in works save a person? Not according to the Word of God.

James Chapter 2 again.
14: What does it profit, my brethren, if a man says he has faith but has not works? Can his faith save him?
15: If a brother or sister is ill-clad and in lack of daily food,
16: and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what does it profit?
17: So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead.
18: But some one will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I by my works will show you my faith.
19: You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe – and shudder.
20: Do you want to be shown, you shallow man, that faith apart from works is barren?
21: Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he offered his son Isaac upon the altar?
22: You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by works,
23: and the scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness”; and he was called the friend of God.
24: You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone.
25: And in the same way was not also Rahab the harlot justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way?
**26: For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so faith apart from works is dead. **

How to respond? You don’t.
Faith is a tree that grows in the heart. You cannot expect the green shoot to bear mature fruit. Some trees may never grow to full maturity. Praise God for the green fields, and let Him worry about the growth.
In the love of the Father,

Nah it’s just the opposite. Protestants reject Christs commandment “Agapate alleilou” or “Love one another as I have loved you”

Well because it takes work. Work that God prepared for us beforehand to walk in and which Paul also says faith working through agape.

Of course we all know protestants rebel against Gods commandment as an added gospel. They proclaim it as loud as possible. (Usually in caps)

I’m just surprised scripture hasn’t been altered yet to read “DON’T LOVE ONE ANOTHER AS I HAVEN’T LOVED YOU”

At least it would be honest.

You are not understanding…is James contradicting Paul - is the Word of God in contradiction??? No it is not…for the outward working of our faith shows that we are indeed genuine believers. You are separating works and faith. These works - what are they? Are they ritualistic ceremonies?? No, it is faith that works by love. You are not balancing the two passages properly. I believe Paul makes it very clear!!!

Romans 4:1-4 NAS95 1 What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found? 2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. 3 For what does the Scripture say? “ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS CREDITED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS.” 4 Now to the one who works, his wage is not credited as a favor, but as what is due.

You cannot work for salvation! BUT…true faith manifests itself in righteous works. BUT, your tendency is to separate the two.

Romans 4:5-7 NAS95 5 But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness, 6 just as David also speaks of the blessing on the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works: 7 "BLESSED ARE THOSE WHOSE LAWLESS DEEDS HAVE BEEN FORGIVEN, AND WHOSE SINS HAVE BEEN COVERED.

In order to marry this with what James is saying we see a diagram of faith with FAITH being at the top and being alone - BUT…works follow beneath outflowing from faith. Faith being the root and works being the tree. BUT, we are only saved on the basis of the faith that was given to us by God…FAITH EVEN ITSELF IS A GIFT GIVEN BY GRACE…

Acts 18:27 NAS95 27 And when he wanted to go across to Achaia, the brethren encouraged him and wrote to the disciples to welcome him; and when he had arrived, he greatly helped those who had believed through grace,

The works that you want to add to faith are an outflow from true repentant faith.

John 6:28-29 NAS95 28 Therefore they said to Him, “What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.”

True faith - the born again experience - the miracle of God shows itself in many ways…

Practicing of righteousness…
1 John 2:29…29 If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone also who practices righteousness is born of Him.

Therefore, whatsoever is born of God practices righteousness.

Loves the brethren…
1 John 3:14…14 We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love abides in death.

Hates sin and does not practice it…
1 John 3:9…9 No one who is born of God practices sin, because His seed abides in him; and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

Loves…
1 John 4:7…7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.

Confesses…
1 John 4:15…15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.

Believes on Christ…
1 John 5:1…1 Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and whoever loves the Father loves the child born of Him.

Perseveres…
1 John 5:4…4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world–our faith.

Keeps commandments…
1 John 2:3…3 By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments.

By the way, after John says all of the things he writes…

1 John 5:13…13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.

Not lustful…
Galatians 5:24 NAS95 24 Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

Walk in the Spirit…
Romans 8:4 NAS95 4 so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
Romans 8:9…9 However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.

Perform works…
John 14:12…12 "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father.

So, your Matthew 25 passage - this is showing that, if indeed one has been born again, they will be giving, loving, hate sin, practice righteousness, observe the commandments, crucify the works of the flesh, walk in the Spirit, etc.

Criticism will not work…adding rituals to be a means of salvation is typified by the Pharisees…you make the cross of Christ of none effect and have something certainly to boast about…but, I am resolved to trust only in the mercy of God through faith in the very sacrifice that he made in giving His Son…and since I have placed my works off to the side as a means of salvation (thereby having nothing to boast of) and put my faith in Christ alone apart from works…I have grown leaps and bounds and go about preaching the gospel to my family and community…Now that is real love. I can’t remember the last time a Catholic came to my door with concern for my soul…probably because they are under the yoke of Catholic law.

John 6:28-29 NAS95 28 Therefore they said to Him, “What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.”

What is saving faith? John 3:36 tells us:

“He who believes in the Son has eternal life; he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God rests upon him.”

Saving faith demands obedience. Christ says so. But when we point that out we are accused of seeking salvation by works.

Here is another beautiful example of the grace of God…

Luke 15:11-27 NAS95 11 And He said, "A man had two sons. 12 The younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of the estate that falls to me.’ So he divided his wealth between them. 13 "And not many days later, the younger son gathered everything together and went on a journey into a distant country, and there he squandered his estate with loose living. 14 "Now when he had spent everything, a severe famine occurred in that country, and he began to be impoverished. 15 "So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. 16 "And he would have gladly filled his stomach with the pods that the swine were eating, and no one was giving anything to him. 17 "But when he came to his senses, he said, 'How many of my father’s hired men have more than enough bread, but I am dying here with hunger! 18 ‘I will get up and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in your sight; 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me as one of your hired men.”’ 20 "So he got up and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion for him, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. 21 "And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ 22 "But the father said to his slaves, ‘Quickly bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet; 23 and bring the fattened calf, kill it, and let us eat and celebrate; 24 for this son of mine was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.’ And they began to celebrate.
Notice what the son said in verse 19 - He says - make me one of your hired men…

I guess he thought he would have to work his way back into reconciliation with the father…but that was not the case…

In verse 21, the son brings forth his unworthiness but the father does not say…you must work to bring your way into the family…no - he does this…

Luke 15:22 "But the father said to his slaves, 'Quickly bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet; 23 and bring the fattened calf, kill it, and let us eat and celebrate;

Luke 15:10 NAS95 10 “In the same way, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

Repenting from sin and trusting Christ as Lord and Savior - faith…the only means of salvation…the grace of the father is such a beautiful picture of the grace of our loving Father. Not by works!

Matthew 23:9 NAS95 9 "Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven.

Do you have a list of those “Traditions”? How perfectly must you follow those “Traditions” so that you will accepted into heaven?
If you want to go down that road, how perfect must your faith be to be accepted into heaven?

In verse 21, the son brings forth his unworthiness but the father does not say…you must work to bring your way into the family…no - he does this…

Luke 15:22 "But the father said to his slaves, 'Quickly bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet; 23 and bring the fattened calf, kill it, and let us eat and celebrate;

More and more yoke being added onto the gospel by Linkowski

Again, are the two verses true or are they not?

If you add even one single verse you declare them to be not true. Read them very carefully.

JESUS IS LORD. Now I am saved. If you add anything else to this, even one dot, one iota, it is an added gospel and you are not relying on faith alone and professing I need something more, an added work.

You say your go around proclaiming the gospel? Sorry it is an added work and voids the above verses. You will die by your works.

Peace and God Bless

If you want to go down that road, how perfect must your faith be to be accepted into heaven?
You need to rearead my postings more carefully. My criticism was of sacramental works/rituals/ceremonies…and I advocated true faith that manifests itself in obedience and love.

I will certainly not answer you Nicene in accordance with your folly.
