How do I say Thanks to God?

I am always asking Him for help, guidance and care of my family but when I pray to thank Him it seems kind of pathetic in a way, Like I ask God to do HUGE things and I say thanks like he’s handed me my change at the store.

For instance, if I wanted to thank a friend, I would send flowers, write a card or give a nice gift…

but how can I thank God?

Does anyone know what I mean?

Do you know any praise songs, or hymns? Those can put it in better words than we might think of ourselves. Plus singing them during our private devotions adds another layer to the experience.

I’d also recommend just thanking God frequently :). In your own words or other people’s words, just thank him for whatever little thing is going on in your life, whether the food you’re about to receive or the bed you sleep on, or the book you’re enjoying reading, or the game you’re playing, or electricity, mountains, colors, etc. There are so many things to be thankful for, just thanking God frequently for the things we enjoy can be a very blessed experience :).

The story is told that St. Teresa of Avila, overwhelmed by God’s goodness, asked Him in prayer: “How can I thank you?” Our Lord answered, “Attend one Mass.”

I do know what you mean but can’t explain it either!
I feel like I want to surprise God with something, but what?
As far as mass goes, that is His gift to me!

I guess it is for us to have a desire to become whom God wants us to become - true children of God - and to allow Him into our lives in all situations.

One example: many times we pray but we doubt. If our prayers are granted, we should pray for more trust in God - I am sure He is very pleased this way.

Sometimes despite one’s efforts to do all one can to thank and praise God and express what is in our heart’s we cannot…we feel that our praise and thanksgiving remains somewhat empty and it is for we can never ever in this life of ourselves give to God that praise and thanksgiving that is His due.
At these times The Holy Spirit will speak for us in hidden ways of our heart’s longing to praise and thank God well.
2 Corinthians Chapter 5
2
For in this also we groan, desiring to be clothed upon with our habitation that is from heaven.

Romans Chapter 8
22
For we know that every creature groaneth and travaileth in pain, even till now. 23 And not only it, but ourselves also, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption of the sons of God, the redemption of our body.
While The Mass is God’s Gift to us, we can offer The Mass to God which is always totally acceptable to Him as His Son offering praise and thanksgiving on our behalf. There is no greater praise and thanksgiving than The Mass.

thank you for all the replies.

They have certainly given me plenty to think about 🙂

I think this is what was foreseen in Psalm 116:12-14:
How can I repay the LORD for all the good done for me?
I will raise the cup of salvation and call on the name of the LORD.
I will pay my vows to the LORD in the presence of all his people.

By attempting to live each moment of our lives in doing His Will. The Guidelines are called “The Ten Commandments”. And Jesus added another… “Thou shalt love they neighbor as thyself” (Mark 12:31) God bless. 🙂

By being like Christ to another person. Thanksgiving in prayer is very important, but showing that you will walk the walk and not just talk the talk is thanksgiving in action.

I would say ‘pay it forward’ but that sounds a little too secular.

I’m a revert, and when I made my first confession, Father told me that part of my penance was to spend time thanking God in the adoration chapel next door. He mentioned the story of the 10 lepers (I think) that Christ cured and how only one came back to thank him. He told me to be like that one sick man.

So now, nearly every Mass I thank God for bringing me Home. Then I remind him of the people in my life who are far from Him and His Church and need His Grace.

I almost think that our joy in living our lives with God is a form of thanksgiving as well.

Say “Thank you God”. Let’s not over complicate things.
Haven’t you ever just picked a flower and given it to someone?
What about planning a surprise party for someone?
How about buying someone their favorite x,y, or z?

It would just be so fun to do these kinds of things for God:love:

Daily Mass is a great way to say thank you. The Eucharist is an offering of thanksgiving. If you can’t go to Mass daily, though, another great way to give thanks is to visit Jesus in the Tabernacle, or meditate on the events in Jesus’ life (such as the mysteries of the Rosary), or read the Word of God.

Sometimes when I pray the Rosary, I “dedicate” it. This is in thanksgiving for…{insert your blessing here}.

I’ve also found a nice way to say thanks is to offer up some kind of service or gift, whether it be volunteer work, a donation to a charity, or whatever.

You’re right, though, sometimes saying “Thank you” just feels inadequate…but I think as long as it’s heartfelt, you’re doing just fine. 👍

**How can you POSSIBLY surprise God? 😃 **

In the past I have on odd occasions taken a small bunch of flowers to Mass with me and after Mass, when the Church was empty, put them before the statue of Our Lady or on the floor in front of The Tabernacle…Barb:)

Simply tell him exactly that, “Thank You God, for all your blessings. Thank you for dying for me because you love me. Help me love you more and more every day.”.

I thank Him by constantly working to build up His Kingdom on Earth, by rededicating myself every day to the accomplishment of the mission He has given me, and by making Him my first priority, again, every single day. In the end, I hope and pray He will recognize me as a ‘good trooper’, throughout the adventures of my life.🙂

Congratulations, Mumof3 -
At least you remember to say THANKS ! (Sometimes, I wonder how many of us do remember - or just sort of say, ‘yippee’ and go on our merry ways.) As posted, a prayer of Thanksgiving - there’s many, or something of your own - an Our Father - A GLORY BE, I think would be ideal, since it praises the Trinity. But at least you remember to say thanks. You get the gold star of the week !

(Oh, and by the way - before opening your post - just the subject line - the thought hit me that just in asking that question, you’d taken the first step in thanksgiving - I believe God has seen your desire to thank Him - your heart’s desire, was already seen by God as a prayer of thanks. — That was just my impression upon seeing the subject line!)
